Dear Friends in Christ:
Welcome to Holy Week. We have just
listened to St. Matthew's account of Jesus'
Passion. This Sunday we hear people say,

Benedict pointed out in his book on Jesus of
Nazareth, "The blood of Jesus speaks a different language from the
blood of Abel. (Heb 12:21) It does not cry out for vengeance and
punishment," the pope said, "It brings reconciliation."
I don't know about you, but I want the blood of Jesus upon me in
union with Christ. Holy Week should inspire us to understand this
deeper in our lives. It points to the blood of Jesus. This Sunday we
pray, "May his blood be upon us." Amen.

St. John’s Annual Parish Festival/Fiesta Annual de Primavera de San Juan
Raffle tickets, sponsored by Pierce Brothers/
Funeraria del Angel, will start selling this
weekend. $1 per ticket or a book for $10. All
the money raised from the raffle will help
with some needed church maintenance and
improvement projects this summer.

competing to be the King and Queen of the
Spring Festival. The candidates, accompanied by their families, will be selling raffle
tickets. Since we are not mailing the books,
we hope you will be generous and purchase
all raffle tickets from them.

the Feinstein Foundation to fight hunger.
Through April 30, all food and financial donations
will go even further as the Feinstein Foundation
adds to the totals! This is a great opportunity to
help the community.

How Old Does a Child Need
to Be in Order to Stay Alone?
¿Qué edad debe tener un
niño para permanecer solo?
Do not assume that when your child understands
what you are saying, he is ready to walk out the door
by himself. Besides the fact that many states have
laws against leaving children of certain ages alone
(for example, younger than 12), experts say children
should not be left by themselves until they are
capable of fighting off an abductor or handling a
crisis situation. Experts also say children do not have
the mental maturity to cross busy streets by
themselves until they are about 10 or 12 years old.
Finally, parents who are certain their young children
would never walk away with a stranger will be
shocked to learn that studies show they probably
will. Stay alert and vigilant, even if you believe your
child is aware of possible dangers from others.
For particular help, call the Archdiocese’s Victims
Assistance Ministry, (213) 637-7650.
