FIFTEENTH SUNDAY
Jesus recounts an incident of rural violence in order
to respond to the question put by the doctor of the
Law: “Who is my neighbor?” The juridicist knew
very well that the road to life is to be found through
love of God and neighbor. Jesus’ anecdote bursts
open the narrowness of his concern.
An anonymous traveler, savagely attacked and
robbed by bandits, is left for dead in the ditch. One
after the other, two clerical representatives of Judaism pass by. Neither helps the wounded man; perhaps they think him dead. Contact with a corpse
would render them ritually unclean. It is a Samaritan, a man with supposedly little concern for morality or religion who stops. Encountering someone in
need raises no casuistic problem for him. It rends
his heart. Obeying no voice but that of compassion,
he treats the victim as he would want to be treated.
The doctor of the Law acknowledges that the Samaritan is the neighbor to the man who fell in with
the robbers. It surprises him to find a despised Samaritan identified as the neighbor.
When Christ came to earth, he united himself with
wounded humanity. Like a good Samaritan, he took
pity on us. “Go and do the same,” becoming
neighbor to whoever needs you. Jesus forces us to
define our neighbor in terms of the other’s need
rather than how the other would serve us.
THOSE PEOPLE
Today’s Gospel should trouble us more than it
does, but we have heard it often. A man expert in
religious law understands the two greatest commandments, but wants Jesus to define “neighbor.”
Jesus conjures up some disturbing images. First, the
violent attack on a traveler, so brutal that the man
appears to be dead. Second, a priest and Levite
come upon the victim. They carefully walk around
his body, afraid of acquiring impurity from the
blood of a corpse, which would exclude them from
the temple rituals for a while. Along comes the Samaritan. In Jesus’ time Jews and Samaritans despised and avoided each other. The Samaritans
claimed to be the original children of Israel and
worshiped God on Mount Gerizim, not in the Jerusalem temple. The Samaritan goes close enough to
see that the beaten man is alive and acts quickly to
save him. Cleaning and covering the wounds, the
Samaritan hauls this Jewish man onto his donkey
and travels to the nearest inn, paying a substantial
sum to ensure his extended care.

The priest, the Levite, and the Samaritan all saw the beaten
man, but the priest and the Levite saw him as a problem,
whereas the Samaritan saw him as a person. The question we
must ask ourselves is how quickly do we step forward to help
someone who might cause us more trouble than we bargained
for? Have we ever refrained from helping someone begging
for food, saying silently, “If I give money they’ll only spend it
on alcohol or drugs,” or “They could really get a job if they
wanted to get off the street,” or perhaps “Those people are
always wanting handouts”? Our neighbors include all “these
people”—the ones whom Jesus insists that we love like ourselves. Let’s get started.

El evangelio de hoy debería inquietarnos más, pero es que lo
hemos oído muchas veces. Un experto en las leyes religiosas
entiende los dos grandes mandamientos, pero quiere que Jesús
le defina quién es el “prójimo”. Jesús evoca algunas imágenes
perturbadoras. Primero, el ataque tan violento y brutal a un
caminante, que parece estar muerto. Segundo, un sacerdote y
un levita ven a la víctima, pero le pasan por el lado con mucho
cuidado de no contagiar ninguna impureza al contacto con
sangre, pues eso los excluiría de participar en los ritos del
templo por un tiempo. Ahora viene un samaritano. En la
época de Jesús los judíos y samaritanos se despreciaban y evitaban encontrarse. Los samaritanos afirmaban ser los hijos
originales de Israel y adoraban a Dios en el monte Garizín y
no en el templo de Jerusalén. El samaritano se acerca lo suficiente como para ver que el hombre golpeado aún está vivo y
actúa rápidamente para salvarlo; le limpia y cubre las heridas, carga a este judío sobre su burro y llega al hostal más
cercano. Ahí paga una cantidad considerada para garantizar
su cuidado. El sacerdote, el levita y el samaritano vieron al
mismo hombre golpeado, pero el sacerdote y el levita vieron
un problema, mientras que el samaritano vio a una persona.
La pregunta que debemos hacernos es ésta: ¿Cuán rápidamente salimos al encuentro de alguien que necesita ayuda,
pero que nos causaría más inconveniencias de lo que
quisiéramos o imagináramos? ¿Has dejado alguna vez de
ayudar a alguien que mendiga comida? Quizás te dijeras interiormente, “Si le doy dinero lo va a usar en alcohol o drogas”
o “Bien pudiera conseguir un trabajo si quisiera dejar de ser
vagabundo” o tal vez pensaras, “Esa gente siempre espera
que se lo den todo”. Nuestro prójimo también es “esa
gente”—y Jesús insiste en que las debemos amar como a
nosotros mismos. Manos a la obra.

The Relics of Saint Louis Martin and Saint Zelie GuerinMartin have arrived!!!!!! Saint Louis and Saint Zelie
are the parents of our dear Patroness, Saint
Therese. We secured these relics from the Carmelitani
Scalzi Casa Generalizia, which is the Generalate House
in Rome, which is the International headquarters of the
Carmelite Order. The relics (bone fragments) were
hand carried and delivered to us on Monday, 27 June
2016. They will be placed in a gold reliquary soon as
we have the other relics of Saint Therese. Look for the
new bronze statue of Our Lady of the Smile by the end of
the summer to go outside the north doors of our Glorious Shrine of the Little Flower. This image of Mary under the title of Our Lady of the Smile is uniquely associated with the Family of Saint Louis and Zelie Martin. This bronze statue to be made by Michele Vandenheuvel of Bené Bronze who made the fine large statue of
Saint Therese seated on a garden bench and now located in the new Prayer Garden of the Parish and
School is scheduled to be cast very soon. These projects
of the Prayer Garden, Homeless Jesus Bronze Sculpture, Our Lady of the Smile Bronze Sculpture and the
house at 221 Mildred NW which we have purchased
have been from the Bequest of our dear +Jacqueline
Libby now watching over us in heaven as she did in her
Last Will and Testament. Lots of wonderful things happening at the Parish and School of Saint Therese this
summer. Also forthcoming are tiled Stations of the
Cross from Mexico which will grace the Sister Cornelius
Walkway connecting the School Campus with the Parish
Campus. These will be donated by our faithful parishioner and neighbor, Mr. Philip C de Baca. So after
many decades of having our beautiful Shrine of the Little Flower dedicated on 4 December, 1955, we are establishing different areas of our parish and school campus for people and pilgrims to pray and meditate in addition to our beautiful Parish Church, The Shrine of the
Little Flower.
¡¡¡Han llegado a nuestra iglesia las reliquias de San
Luis Martin y Santa Celia Guérin-Martin!!! San Luis y
Santa Celia son los padres de nuestra querida Patrona,
Santa Teresita. Hemos obtenido estas reliquias de la
Casa Matriz de las Carmelitas Descalzas localizada en
Roma, sede internacional de la Orden de las Carmelitas. Las reliquias (fragmentos óseos) fueron traídas personalmente y nos las entregaron el lunes 27 de mayo de
2016. Serán colocadas en un relicario de oro tan pronto
como tengamos las de Santa Teresita. Esté pendiente de
la nueva estatua de bronce de la Virgen de la Sonrisa.
Al final del verano será colocada afuera de las puertas
al lado norte de nuestro Glorioso Santuario de la Pequeña Flor. Esta imagen de María con el título de Nuestra Señora de la Sonrisa está asociado únicamente a la
familia de San Luis y Santa Celia Martin.

Esta estatua de bronce de Bené la hará el escultor Michele Vandenheuvel. El hizo la estatua de Santa Teresita sentada en un banco, que está colocada en el nuevo jardín de Oración de la Parroquia/Escuela. Está programada para ser moldeada muy pronto.
Estos proyectos del jardín de Oración, las esculturas de bronce de
Jesús sin hogar, Nuestra Señora de la Sonrisa y la casa que recientemente hemos comprado en 221 Mildred NW, son el legado
de nuestra querida + Jacqueline Libby que ahora vela por nosotros en el cielo como lo hizo en su última voluntad y testamento.
Están sucediendo muchas cosas maravillosas este verano en la
Parroquia y la Escuela de Santa Teresita. También muy pronto
tendremos un Vía Crucis de cerámica hecho en México que decorará el pasaje Hna. Cornelius. Este pasaje es el que conecta el
campus de la escuela con nuestro templo. El Vía Crucis será donado por nuestro fiel parroquiano y vecino, el Sr. Philip C. de Baca.
Estamos estableciendo diferentes áreas para que los peregrinos y
los fieles de la parroquia puedan orar y meditar en los alrededores
de nuestra escuela e iglesia, además del Santuario de la Pequeña
Flor, después de muchas décadas de haber sido dedicada el 4 de
diciembre de 1955.

You Did It for Me “He does not
listen, laughs at inappropriate times, and is failing the class,”
said an ESL Teacher from Del Norte High School when Catholic Charities followed up on Carlos, a Cuban boy recently
resettled here in Albuquerque. Within a week, Carlos was
matched with a mentor, Marissa, who meets with Carlos once
a week in a classroom at Catholic Charities. They practice
speaking in English and go over questions Carlos may have.
At the end of the school year, Catholic Charities contacted his
ESL teacher to see how he was doing in class. She reported
that Carlos is doing much better. He is listening and participating in class. In fact, he recently received a perfect score
on his most recent English quiz. Thanks to caring volunteers,
Marissa has been able to provide additional support to Carlos.
Instead of shying away from his challenges, he is now learning English with a little extra confidence and support. To learn
