Venezolanos
en las Grandes Ligas
Cuando y cuantas han sido las
participaciones de los venezolanos
en las Grandes Ligas?
El 23 de Abril de 1939, con los Senadores
de Washington, llega el primer venezolano
a las Grandes Ligas, Alejandro “Patón”
Carrasquel. El 13 de Septiembre de 2015,
con los Dodgers de Los Ángeles, se registra
hasta hoy el Grande Liga No. 343, Ronald
Reyes. Hasta la década de los 50, se habían
graduado solo seis (6); durante la década
de los 60, se agregaron otros once (11); en
los 70, otros diez (10); en los 80, veintiocho
(28), en los 90, sesenta y dos, ‘esto gracias
a la influencia de la instalación de las
granjas y/o academias que en cantidad
de veintitrés (23), se desarrollaron en
nuestro territorio; especialmente en la
zona Centro-Occidental del país. En el eje
Aragua, Carabobo, Yaracuy, Lara, inclusive
se creó la Venezuela Summer League. En
la década de los 2000, se incrementó en
ciento treinta (130), pero con el éxodo
de las granjas de las Organizaciones de
Grandes Ligas, gracias a la problemática
existencial de nuestro país, bajamos a
noventa y dos en la década de 2010.
Durante este Spring Training han
participado ciento treinta y siete (137)
compatriotas venezolanos. Setenta y dos
(72) en la Liga Americana, y sesenta y cinco
(35) en la Liga Nacional.
El año pasado (2015) iniciaron en Grandes
Ligas sesenta y cinco; para este año 2016,
se esperan inicien sobre setenta (70).
Si así llueve que no escampe! Que
siga el ascenso de la participación de
venezolanos en las grandes ligas, así como
el incremento de técnicos, tanto en las
ligas menores como en las grandes ligas.
Quien considera usted que debe ser el
dirigente de la Selección de Venezuela
para el próximo Clásico Mundial?
Para nosotros es muy fácil contestar
esta pregunta. Tenemos muchos y muy
buenos técnicos estrategas, conocedores
del Béisbol. La lista sobrepasa la decena.
Ojala la respuesta de los dirigentes de
la Federación Venezolana de Béisbol,
permitan que se logre recuperar el sitial
que merece nuestro béisbol. Contamos
con un excelente grupo de talentosos y
responsables Grandes Ligas. La piedra de
tranca está, como siempre en la capacidad
gerencial de los dirigentes de la FVB.
Siendo sinceros, muy puntualmente del
sempiterno presidente de la FVB, Edwin
Zerpa, de todos es conocido que no calza
los puntos como dirigente de nuestro
béisbol, pero es también conocido que en
nuestro país no están todos los que son, ni
son todos los que están! Ojala! El Sr. Zerpa,
ponga oído; aunque sea por primera vez
se deje asesorar por entendidos. Seguimos
siendo sinceros, no lo creemos. El eje
presidencialista de nuestro país, raya en
monarquía, autocrática y omnipotente.

Desbancó a Andy Murray
y es nuevo campeón
de Madrid
El serbio ganó la final del Masters 1000 por 6-2; 3-6 y 6-3 ante
el escocés, que defendía el título y, en consecuencia, dejará
de ser el número dos del mundo
E
l número uno del mundo, Novak
Djokovic, ganó este domingo el
Masters 1000 de Madrid al derrotar
en la final al británico Andy Murray
por 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.
El serbio necesitó dos horas y seis minutos
para imponerse a un combativo Murray,
campeón el pasado año en Madrid, que con
su derrota también perderá su puesto de
número dos del mundo en favor del suizo
Roger Federer en la próxima clasificación el
lunes.
Ganador este año en Doha, en el Open de
Australia, Indian Wells y Miami, Djokovic
añade su segundo trofeo madrileño a su
palmarés, tras el que había conseguido en
2011. De paso también es su 29º Masters
1000, que constituye un récord.
Su nueva victoria borra de golpe su
sorpresiva eliminación ante el entonces
N.55 del mundo en Montecarlo, cuando
está a punto de encarar el torneo de Roma
y Roland-Garros. Es el primer título que
Djokovic le gana a Murray en tierra batida,
sumando su 23ª victoria sobre el británico,
al que se ha enfrentado en 33 ocasiones.
El primer set fue cómodo para el serbio,
que comenzó rompiendo el servicio de
Murray en el juego inicial para ir por
delante. Djokovic mantuvo la iniciativa ante
un Murray, que sufría las devoluciones a la

En el tercer set, con 3-2 para Djokovic,
tres errores de Murray le hicieron ceder su
servicio dejando en ventaja 4-2 al serbio.
El serbio cerró el encuentro con un 6-3 final
en un largo último juego de más de 10
minutos, en el que Murray desaprovechó
hasta siete pelotas de break.

It was Djokovic’s second title in Madrid,
and fifth of the year this season. He
reached 33 wins, the most on tour in 2016.
The loss allows Roger Federer to surpass
Murray for No.2 in the world on Monday. It
also kept the British player from winning
his 12th Masters 1000 title, and second on
clay.
“Congratulations to Novak on a great win,
there’s been a lot against me in the last
few years,” Murray said on court with a
smile. “He’s doing great things.”
Djokovic dominated the first set but it was
even from then until the end, with both
players faltering on decisive moments.
Djokovic hit 25 winners but had as many

The nine Masters tournaments of the
season are elite tournaments ranked
just below the four Grand Slams. It was
Djokovic’s first clay-court tournament
since being upset by 55th-ranked Jiri
Vesely in the second round in Monte Carlo
last month.
Djokovic had won in Madrid for the first
time in 2011. In addition to beating homecrowd Nadal in straight sets in last year’s
final, Murray had also won the Madrid
tournament in 2008, when it wasn’t
considered a Masters. He defeated Nadal
in the semifinals on Saturday.
The British player has been impressive this
season on clay, the surface which has seen
him struggle the most in his career. He
was coming off a semifinal loss to Nadal
in three sets in Monte Carlo. Defeat leaves
him tied in points with Federer for the No.2
ranking, but behind on the tiebreakers.
Murray is still expected to be considered
one of the main favorites at the French
Open, which begins in two weeks. He
lost to Djokovic in last year’s semifinals at
Roland Garros.

a Copa América Centenario, que se

Copa América 2016, es un torneo
de fútbol men’sassociation regular
internacional que se celebrará en los
Estados Unidos en 2016. La competencia
es una celebración del centenario de
CONMEBOL y la Copa América, y lo que
será la primera Copa América alojado fuera
de América del Sur.
El torneo, de 100 años que será la 45ª
edición de la Copa América desde su
creación en 1916, se llevará a cabo como
parte de un acuerdo entre la CONMEBOL
(la Confederación de Fútbol de América
del Sur) y la CONCACAF (la Confederación
de Fútbol de Norte y América central y el
Caribe) como una edición especial entre el

Sports executive corruption
The tournament was placed in doubt
after several high profile sports executive
arrests were made including people
involved with media rights holder Datisa
(using the trading name of “Wematch”),
a partnership between three media
rights companies; Full Play, Torneos and
Traffic Sports Marketing. In December
2014, Brazilian José Hawilla, the owner
and founder of Traffic Sports plead guilty
“corruption charges including racketeering,
wire fraud and money laundering”. Datisa
held agreements for the commercial rights
with CONMEBOL and CONCACAF and
had their bank account frozen placing the
tournament in jeopardy. On 21 October
2015
CONCACAF announced
that they had terminated their
agreement with Datisa.
On 23 October 2015,
CONCACAF, CONMEBOL
and
the
hosting
association US Soccer
Federation all confirmed
that the tournament was
going ahead as originally
intended.
Trophy
A new trophy was
supposed to be created for
the tournament and was to
be unveiled on 4 July 2015 at the
2015 Copa América final. No
trophy was unveiled amidst
the FIFA corruption scandal.
However,
CONMEBOL
announced that in 28
April 2016, that a
presentation for the
trophy will take
place in Bogota,
Luis Chiriboga, the President of the
Ecuadorian Football Federation stated
the United States and Mexico were
potential hosts of at least one stage of
the competition. Hawit preferred the
competition to be hosted in the United
States for financial reasons, stating that “the
market is in the United States, the stadiums
are in the United States, the people are in
the United States. The study that we have
made [shows] that everything’s in the
United States.” In July 2012, CONCACAF
President Jeffrey Webb stated there was
much organizing to be done.
On 1 May 2014, it was announced that the
tournament would be held in the United
States from 3–26 June 2016.
Venues
On 8 January 2015, CONCACAF and
CONMEBOL announced the 24 U.S.
metropolitan areas which had indicated
interest in hosting matches.
The stadiums were chosen following
a bidding process, with the minimum
capacity to be 50,000. The final list of venues,
anticipated to number between 8 and 13,
was to be announced in May 2015. However,
the list was not released and speculation
regarding whether the tournament will
be able to move forward arose because
Interpol red noticeswere issued for the
former presidents of the CONMEBOL and
CONCACAF confederations in relation to
the 2015 FIFA corruption case, including
allegations that they accepted significant
bribes in relation to the $112.5 million
broadcasting deal for the event. However,
officials from CONMEBOL expressed a
desire to move forward with the event
despite the scandal.
On 19 November 2015, the ten venues
selected for the tournament were
announced by CONCACAF, CONMEBOL,
and US Soccer.

The colt beat out 19 other competitors
over the course of a hectic mile and a
quarter, crossing the finish line about a
body length ahead of Exaggerator.
Jockey Mario Gutierrez earned a patient
win with Nyquist, giving the racehorse
Danzing Candy plenty of leeway to lead
the pack early. Gutierrez kept Nyquist
close, though, never dropping much
lower than third. Nyquist pulled ahead in
the final stretch and didn’t ease up until
he definitively captured the Run for the
Roses.
The win didn’t exactly come as a surprise.
By mid-afternoon, the bay colt was pulling
down 2-1 odds, cleanly earning honors as
the heavy favorite. Nyquist, owned, trained
and ridden by the same team that won the
2012 Kentucky Derby, approached this
year’s race with the confidence of having
succeeded at Churchill Downs before.
“There’s a quiet confidence in the group
that’s not flashy,” owner Paul Reddam told
Rick Howlett of member station WFPL
before the race. “But, to speak Californian
for a moment, there’s a very good vibe
in the barn”. Famous for his ice hockey
fandom, the Ontario native named
Nyquist after a player on his favorite team,
forward Gustav Norquist of the Detroit
Red Wings. And it’s not even the first, or
the second, or the third, Red Wings player
who has served as namesake for one of
Reddam’s horses.
But, whatever the pedigree of his on-ice
predecessor, Nyquist (the horse, to be
clear) has been dominant on the track in
his own right. Before the Kentucky Derby,
the horse had gone a perfect 7 for 7 in his
early races.
Now, make that 8 for 8.
Of course, the conclusion to this year’s
Derby Day, now in the books, also ushers
us to the starting gate of another beloved,
decades-old tradition: talk of a potential
Triple Crown. The Kentucky Derby is just
the first jewel in horse racing’s highest
prize; to win a Triple Crown, Nyquist must
now go on to win the Preakness and the
Belmont Stakes, too.
American Pharoah managed the feat
last year, for the first time since 1978.

gentlemen, let the breathless debates

stops. Negri took the lead on Curran’s final
top with 40 minutes remaining, and led the
rest of the way while the two Corvette DPs
put on a spirited battle for the runner-up
slot.
Goossens finished second, 30.099 behind
Negri but only 0.855 seconds ahead of
Curran. Bomarito took fourth, followed
by Katherine Legge in the No. 0 Panoz
DeltaWing Racing coupe started by Rayhall.
front row and then ran 1-2 throughout the
opening half hour of the race. TOTAL Pole
Award winner Tristan Nunez paced the
opening 25 laps in the No. 55 ModSpace
Mazda Prototype, closely pursued by Tom
Long in the team’s No. 70 entry.
Then, an incident involving two of the top
three cars in the point standings sent the
remaining Prototype contenders to the
pits, with the Mazdas returning to action
running fifth and sixth after encountering
problems connecting the fuel probes on
the pit stops. Only six laps later, Joel Miller
pulled off course prior to the Corkscrew,
losing power in the No. 70 started by Long
that led to that car’s retirement.
Negri was third in line after taking over for
Pew during the caution, but needed only
two laps to take the lead from Sean Rayhall,
with the No. 0 Panoz DeltaWing Racing
electing not to change drivers on its pit
stop.
With the Long/Miller car out, Mazda
teammate, and Monterey native, Jonathan
Bomarito then challenged Negri for the
lead, only to spin on Lap 45 as the top
two cars were coming up on slower traffic.
Bomarito managed to continue and
finished fourth, matching the team’s best
finish.
“We showed everyone in the paddock that
we have a car that can win races,” Nunez
said. “That’s all that matters. We’re going
to take what we learned here and move
forward”.
Kimber-Smith returns PR1Mathiasen to
PC Winner’s Circle, Joins Alon in winning
Monterey Grand Prix at Mazda Raceway
Tom Kimber-Smith survived a late-race
charge by Renger van der Zande and held
on to win Sunday’s two-hour Continental
Tire Monterey Grand Prix powered by
Mazda for the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar
Championship Prototype Challenge (PC)
and GT Daytona (GTD) classes.
Kimber-Smith took the lead on a pit stop
under caution with one hour remaining,
and officially held it the rest of the way in
the No. 52 PR1/Mathiasen Motorsports
ORECA FLM09 started from the pole by
Robert Alon. However, he had a scare with
seven minutes remaining, when van der
Zande briefly nosed the No. 8 Starworks
Motorsport entry into the lead while racing
in traffic in Turn 4. Kimber-Smith held his
line and quickly regained the advantage
into the next turn, and went on to win by
1.736 seconds.
Robert Alon won his first career TOTAL
Pole Award in Saturday’s qualifying, and
then led the opening three laps of the
two-hour race. Alon then ran second for
the remainder of his stint, before joining
all of the PC competitors in the pits on
Lap 38 during the lone caution of the race
in the No. 52 PR1 Mathiasen Motorsports
Professional Security Consultants/Westfield
ORECA FLM09.
Renger van der Zande, taking over the No.
8 Starworks Motorsport entry from Alex
Popow, appeared to take the lead in the
sprint out of the pits, but a review showed
that Kimber-Smith was first in the proper
exit line.
“I knew my job after the restart was to keep
Renger behind me,” Kimber-Smith said.
“It was dicey for the first couple of laps,
but then he started racing with Stephen
Simpson. As soon as I could maintain a gap
over them, they said to start saving fuel.
That’s difficult to do when you have three
or four PC cars trying to chase you down. So
maintaining position while trying to save
fuel was one of the most difficult things I’ve
done in my career”.
Kimber-Smith pulled away on the restart
and led the rest of the way. It was his first
victory of the season, and first since the
team won four races – and the Tequila
Patrón North American Endurance Cup – in
2015.
Van der Zande and Popow finished second
for the second consecutive event, followed
by Jon Bennett and Colin Braun in the No.
54 CORE autosport ORECA.
“I had the lead, but it was really short,” van
der Zande said of his attempted pass. “I was
on the outside; he was on the inside, so it
wasn’t really a lead. For sure, it was a hard
fight. I used up all my tires to get into P2,
and when I chased down Tom I couldn’t
really attack. It’s great to take two seconds
in our races in California, but really, I want
to win, I don’t want to be second”.

Jason Day
se quedó con el Players

l australiano Jason Day dominó
de principio a fin el The Players
Championship, considerado oficiosamente como el “quinto grande” de la
temporada, para finalmente hacerse con el
título de campeón casi sin oposición.
Day, que con esta victoria suma tres títulos
esta temporada en el circuito profesional
estadounidense, diez en toda su carrera,
completó su último recorrido al TPC Sawgrass
de Ponte Vedra Beach (Florida, EE.UU.) en 71
golpes, uno bajo par, para sumar un total
de 273 (-15), lo que supone sacar cuatro
impactos sobre el estadounidense Kevin
Chappell, segundo.
El español Sergio García continuó en esta
última jornada sin acertar en sus golpes. Cerró
su actuación en The Plyers, torneo que ganó
en 2008, con 75 golpes, tres por encima del
par, tras apuntarse cinco birdies, tres bogeys,
un doble bogey y un triple bogey, este en el
hoyo 18 en el que se penalizó hasta en dos
ocasiones. Terminó en el puesto 54 con un
total de 290 impactos, dos por encima del
par, muy lejos de sus mejores registros en un
torneo que confiesa ser uno de sus favoritos.
