April 6, 2015 www.wasterecycling.org SAFETY MONDAY Inattentional Blindness: when attention to one thing causes us to miss what may be very obvious to others. Picture this: a driver, on his regular route, keeping a conscientious eye on the speedometer, the rear view mirror, the oncoming traffic. But the driver is too late, when he notices a deer standing in the road. He slams on the brakes but can't avoid striking the animal. Later, the driver insists to his supervisor that his eyes were on the road--he was paying attention to his driving. He just never saw the deer. Why could the supervisor be skeptical? Because naturally, people believe that as long as our eyes are open, we are seeing. Realizing that the brain does a lot of processing behind the scenes, we expect that objects--a large animal in our path, for example--will capture our attention. Just as people believe that seeing is a matter only of opening one's eyes, recent studies of visual perception have demonstrated how little people see when we're not paying attention, a phenomenon known as "inattentional blindness." Avoid inattentional blindness by: • Avoiding distractions within the cab (Cell Phone, Radio, CB). • Address issues in your life that may be causing stress and occupying your mind. • Slow Down and be deliberate in your actions. Up to Certification to Ensure Safe Drivers For more information on how to get your drivers certified, contact us at [email protected]
