Hardly sounds like mercy! Unlike some contemporary rich folks, there is no indication of lying, stealing, or cheating in Jesus’ parable. The rich man made a living, not a killing. Why does Jesus name him “fool”? First, because of presumption. Five times in nine verses, the rich man declares, “I shall.” God’s not in charge here, I am! Second, selfishness— four times, “my/myself.” No God, no neighbor; he talks to himself, about himself: my possessions, my productivity, my plans! So, instead of chasing “treasure for ourselves,” Jesus and Pope Francis’ Jubilee Year of Mercy bid us grow “rich in what matters to God” (12:21), namely, the corporal and spiritual works of mercy. Give food, drink, clothing, and healing; visit the imprisoned; bury the dead. Heal with Jesus’ own gentleness the doubt, ignorance, and sins of others; comfort, forgive, be patient; and pray for the living and dead. An important part of this process is the personal touch of a sponsor from our congregation to move alongside of them during this time. Basically, a sponsor is a friend. One who is supportive and welcoming to the new candidate as they learn about the Catholic faith. A person who will be invitational and include them in their everyday lives and events. Do you recognize these gifts in yourself? If you do, we need you to share them! A sponsor is a vital part of the process and a link to the social and spiritual life of our church. The sponsor will attend the RCIA meetings after the 9am mass. They are not expected to be experts in Catholicism and know everything there is about the faith. We as a team certainly do not. What we hope to do is evangelize, which is an important part of this present period of “Inquiry” and Precatechumenate. We share our stories! We share about Jesus’ forgiveness and unconditional love”. As we share, we learn more about our faith and our personal relationship with Jesus. It is a fun, interesting and vital ministry. We laugh, cry, celebrate and learn together in a social and spiritual environment. In the near future you will be hearing first hand from some of our past sponsors and their experiences. If you have any interest in learning about the ministry and hearing more about it, would you please contact me in the church office, 949-494-9701 ext. 113.
