Life can sometimes seem like a desert by its harshness, aridness, and the lack of water we seek for happiness. For those who have crossed the desert in search of a better life in this country, the place may have had plenty of opportunity; of finding ourselves and it he deepest reasons for existence, but also with the temptation to return and abandon all our dreams. Those who leave their homeland have kind of mission to fulfill and because the challenge is so great and the difficulties so severe, they may want to return. The Israelites wanted to return to Egypt, despite all the hardships they had endured. It is not difficult to imagine that Jesus would also want to return to the comfort of his home in Nazareth. But Jesus knew that he had a mission to fulfill: the will of the Father to bring the Good News of Salvation to the world. Jesus endured hunger, thirst, and the temptation to easily demonstrate his power, and remain in prayer in the desert. In the context of our own lives, the desert can even be within us, if we know how to remain silent to listen to God during those moments when we wished we were somewhere else. We enter into a desert with Jesus, so that with Him, we can join his work of salvation. In prayer, we find motivations for our actions and the strength of God to resist doing what otherwise would seem easier and comfortable but isn’t for our own good and salvation and that of our family and community. He will give us the water we need and God himself sent the angels to sustain us in our often difficult journey through life. For Reflection What decisions for my own good and the good of other have I made? How am I frequently tempted to put off doing what I had proposed? How do I lean on God to move forward, do what He has called me to do, and follow him? Keep Us Informed! Have you changed your name, address, or phone number? Are you or someone you know in the hospital or homebound? If you answer yes to any one of these questions, then please call our parish office at 815-625-0640. It is vital that we keep the census updated.
