Having introduced many top quality albums for the Egyptian dance, I am working on a new
series to introduce each individual solo instrument we use in the Egyptian music ensembles as
the star of each album, featuring a top class virtuoso in each one. Here, I am delighted to present to you Professor Maged Serour the master of the Egyptian kanoon in a unique collection
of famous love songs arranged especially for the Egyptian dance. So far in the series, a very successful introduction
of the quarter tone accordion called "El Amar" featuring the great young
star accordionist Mohsen Allaam has been released by ARC Music (EUCD1589).
The joy and pleasure in preparing the musical arrangements
and recording of this album has
been one of the exciting highs of my musical experiences. Maged Serour has been one of my
closest friends and alssociates as well as recording with me since the early nineties on almost all
my previous produ tions such as the "Best of Om Kolthoum",
"Best of Abdul Halim Hafiz",
"Best of Mohamed Abdul Wahab", "Best of Farid Al Atrash", "Source Of Fire", "Secrets of
The Eye" and "Faddah". A close relationship such as this has flourished into this beautiful
joint creativity, which we present to you to enjoy. The way Maged has poured himself into the
making of this album was a pleasure to experience. He looked after every note recorded and
every feeling expressed in a way that has personally taught me a lot about the love and joy of
creating.
I would really like to thank and acknowledge my dear friend Maged for his friendship and for
allowing me to share this experience.

MAGED SEROUR was born in Cairo, Egypt on 11th September 1963 to a small family who love art
and music. His father loved singing to the point of reaching professional standards. Maged joined
the High Institute for Arabian Musical Studies at the age of fifteen and was taught the qanun by
the top professors of the instrument at the time such as Dr. Kamel Abdallah and Abdel Fattah
Mansy. He graduated with honours and the highest marks at the institute in 1986. Maged was
very quickly recruited into the most successful orchestra of the Middle East at the time, the Al
Maseya Orchestra which was led by the qanun maestro, the late Ahmed Fouad Hassan, which
amounted to the greatest compliment any qanun player could receive. His first concert with the
orchestra was in London, England at the Royal Albert Hall acknowledging
the works of
Mohamed Abdul Wahab, Egypt's top composer and slOger. Amongst the numerous musical
achievement awards granted to Maged, he received the top prize for the highest creative works
on qanun in 1993 by the Academy of Live and Recorded Arts in Cairo. He was also elected the
best qanun player of the Middle East in 1994 at the Cairo Opera House Musical Awards. In 1998,
the Maged Serour Egyptian Takht (musical Ensemble) was awarded the first prize for the best
ensemble at the Festival of Arabian Music. All of this while he was also working with the greatest
Middle Eastern composers such as Mohamed Abdul Wahab, Baligh Hamdy, Mohamed El
Mougy, Sayed Mekkawy, Helmy Bakr, Salah El Sharnouby and Hossam Ramzy. Singers too
were clamouring to feature the unique style of Maged Serour on their albums such as Lady
Warda Al Jazaireya, Lady Nagat Al Saghirah, Mohamed Abdou, Kazem Al Saher, Hani Shaker,
Amro Diab, Hossam Ramzy and Rachid Taha. Maged worked on many Egyptian film scores,
such as Had El Seif, Nasser 56 and El Keif. In all the Middle Eastern musical festivals in Egypt,
Tunisia, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Morocco,
Maged is always one of the top features.
HOSSAM RAMZY, Egypt's Ambassador of Rhythm was born in Cairo. His musical career began
early, when at the age of three he was given his first drum - an Egyptian Tabla. His passion for
percussion was noted by his family (many of whom were themselves involved in the arts) who
encouraged him to master his craft by studying with the leading music teachers of Egypt. A
move to Saudi Arabia introduced Hossam to many of the Bedouin tribes who gave the young
Hossam a rich insight into the cultural origins of Middle Eastern music that became the inspiration for many of his later rhythmic directions.
In the mid 1970's he moved to England, and enjoyed great success as a Jazz and Latin style
drummer working with many highly respected Jazz musicians like Andy Sheppard and Geoff
Williams. But, as he began looking for new dimensions of percussive sounds, he found himself
turning full circle, back to his first love, the Egyptian drums, and the thrilling dance rhythms
of the Middle East. The distinctive sound of Hossam's percussion and the exciting rhythms on
his albums caught the imagination of Peter Gabriel who invited Hossam to perform on his
albums 'PASSION' and later 'US'. Hossam went on to work with many top musicians including Joan Armatrading and Mari Wilson. In 1994 Robert Plant and Jimmy Page (ex Led
Zeppelin) invited Hossam to bring together a band of Arabian musicians and work on their
reunion album 'No Quarter - Unledded' which was awarded triple platinum. This led to
Hossam joining Page and Plant on their historic reunion 1995/96 tour of the world. Ever since,
Hossam has been extensively touring with various artists, such as Pino Daniele of Italy as well
as many of the top class Arabian Singers like Cheb Khaled, Rachid Taha, Faudel and Yesim
Salkim, the most popular female singer from Turkey. To date Hossam has released 18 albums
of Egyptian dance and world music, with many of them dedicated to percussion and rhythms
of the world.
He has also collaborated
on composing and performing
many award-winning
film sound
tracks like: Stargate, Wings Of A Dove, The Saint, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Stealing
Beauty and The Last Temptation Of Christ.

Spanish composer Joaquin Rodrigo. It has been covered by many amazing artists such as Chick Corea in
his song "Spain". Here Maged expresses his feelings in this heart-melting
rendition of the piece,

The Qanun [ka-noon] is a plucked box zither or psaltery of the Middle East, North Africa and
parts of Asia. It is a classical instrument of the Arab world and Turkey. In its final design and
form the instrument was invented in the Abbasy period in the history of the Middle East by
the legendary musician and instrument maker Al Faraby (t 950 AD). Musical history books
however state that the qanun has its roots extending to the Pharaohs' times when it was called
sabkh, having Assyrian roots where it was called the nozha. A similar instrument was widely
used during the Greek empire and was called monochord. The qanun has a trapezoid body with
one rectangular side. The longer side varies in length between 75 and 100 ern (29-39 in.) and
the box is 32 to 44 em wide (12.5 to 17.5 in.). It is usually strung with 87 nylon strings (formerly gut strings) in groups of three which run across a bridge resting on five patches of fish
skin. The instrument has a range of about four octaves. Modern qanuns are marked by the use
of small brass levers which can be raised and lowered in order to finely adjust intervals. The
player rests the qanun on his knees or on a table with the longest side facing him and the perpendicular side to his right. The strings are plucked by ring-shaped plektra made from buffalo
horn placed on both index fingers.
Today similar instruments are used widely in Asia, such as the Indian and Iranian santoor, as
well as the Hungarian cimba/om, however these are played using thin 'hammers'.

celebres, arran gees specialernent pour la danse egyptienne. Le premier album de la serie sous Ie
label ARC Music (EUCDlS89),
et qui a deja rernporte un franc succes, a permis de presenter
l'accordeon quart de ton "El Amar" avec pour instrumentiste
Ie jeune et talentueux accordeoniste Mohsen Allaam.
La joie et Ie bonheur que m'a apportes la preparation de cet album, avec les arrangements rnusicaux et l'enregistrement,
en font un des meilleurs moments de ma carriere musicale. Maged
Serour est un de mes plus proches amis et associes, ayant participe a I'enregistrement
de la plupart de mes precedents albums des les annees 1990 dont "Best of Om Kolthoum",
"Best of
Abdul Halim Hafiz", "Best of Mohamed Abdul Wahab", "Best of Farid Al Atrash", "Source
Of Fire", "Secrets of The Eye" et "Faddah". Cerre solide ami tie s'est epanouie en une superbe
co-creativite, avec pour resultat cet album que nous avons Ie plaisir de vous presenter. La facon
dont Maged s' est investi dans cette production a ete pour moi un veritable plaisir. Son attachement a parfaire chaque note enregistree et chaque sentiment exprime m'a personnellement
apporte beau coup quant a l'arnour et la joie de creer,

MAGED SEROUR est ne au Caire,
Egypte, Ie 11 septembre 1963 dans
une petite famille d'arnateurs d'art
et de musique. Son pere aimait tellement chanter qu'il avait acquis
les qualites d'un chanteur professionnel. Maged entra a l'Ecole
superieure de musique arabe
a
quinze ans er etudia Ie kanun sous
la houlette des meilleurs professeurs, dont Dr Kamel Abdallah et
Abdel Fattah Mansy. Diplorne

et les meilleures
notes enregistrees
it l'ecole en
1986, Maged
fut rapidement
recrute
par un des meilleurs
orchestre
du Moyen-Orient
a
l'epoque, Al Maseya Orchestra
dirige par Ie maitre du kanun, feu Ahmed Fouad Hassan. Ce qui represente Ie plus grand compliment qui puisse etre fait a un joueur de kanun. Son premier concert avec cet orchestre eut
lieu it Londres au Royal Albert Hall, consacre a I'ceuvre du plus grand compositeur
et chanteur egyptien, Mohamed Abdul Wahab. Maged recut de nombreuses
distinctions
dans Ie
domaine musical dont Ie premier prix recompensant
la production la plus creative au kanun en
1993, decerne par l'Academie des Arts live et enregistres au Caire. En 1994, il recut Ie titre de
meilleur joueur de kanun du Moyen-Orient
it I'occasion des Soirees des oscarsde la musique a
l'Opera du Caire. En 1998, I'ensemble Maged Serour Egyptian Takht remporta Ie premier prix
recornpensant
Ie meilleur ensemble au Festival de Musique arabe. Parallelement,
Maged travaillait avec les plus grands compositeurs
du Moyen-Orient
dont Mohamed Abdul Wahab,
Baligh Hamdy, Mohamed El Mougy, Sayed Mekkawy, Helmy Bakr, Salah El Sharnouby et
Hossam Ramzy. Maged Serour etait egalement extremernent recherche pour son style unique
par de nombreux artistes de la chanson, a I'occasion d'enregistrement
d'alburns, dont Lady
Warda Al Jazaireya, Lady Nagat Al Saghirah, Mohamed Abdou, Kazem Al Saher, Hani
Shaker, Amro Diab, Hossam Ramzy, Rachid Taha. Maged a egalement participe a la realisation
de nombreuses musiques de films egyptiens, dont Had El Seif, Nasser 56 et El Keif Maged

HOSSAM RAMZY, l'Ambassadeur
egyptien du rythme est ne au Caire. II cornrnenca la musique
des trois ans, age OU il recut son premier tambour, un tabla egyptien. Sa passion pour la percussion fut rernarquee par sa famille (dont de nombreux membres etaient deja verses dans les
arts) qui I'encouragea a maitriser son art sous la houlette des meilleurs professeurs de musique
d'Egypte. Son installation en Arabie Saoudite lui offrit l'opportunite
de rencontrer de nombreuses tribus bedouines, Cette experience permit au jeune Hossam d'explorer
les racines
memes de la musique du Moyen-Orient
qui furent 'plus tard une source d'inspiration
et
d'orientation
determinante pour son expression rythrnique.
Au milieu des annees 70, Hossam ernigra en Angleterre, ou il remporta un franc succes en tant
que percussionniste
de musique de jazz et larino-arnericaine,
jouant avec nombre de grands
artistes de jazz tels qu'Andy Sheppard et GeoffWilliams. Cependant, alors qu'il se mit en quete
de nouvelles dimensions dans les sons de percussion, il se retrouva a son point de depart, revenant a son premier amour, les tambours egyptiens et les rythmes vibrants des danses du
Moyen-Orient.
Le son caracteristique
de ce percussionniste
et la qualite rythmique de ses
albums captiverent I'imagination de Peter Gabriel qui invita Hossam a jouer dans ses albums
"PASSION" puis' US'. Hossam continua a travailler avec de nombreux artistes de haut niveau
dontJoan Armatrading et Mari Wilson. En 1994, Robert Plant et Jimmy Page (de I'ex-groupe
Led Zeppelin) inviterent Hossam it reunir un groupe de musiciens arabes pour l'album qui
marqua leurs retrouvailles 'No Quarter - Unledded', trois fois disque de platine. Hossam fut
amene a suivre Page et Plant lors de leur tournee mondiale 1995/96. Depuis, Hossam a effecrue de
nombreuses tournees avec divers artistes, tels que Pino Daniele d'Italie, certains des plus grands
interpretes de la chanson du monde arabe dont Cheb Khaled, Rashid Taha, Faudel et Yesim
Salkim, la chanteuse turque la plus populaire. Hossam a a son actif 18 albums de danse egyptienne
et de musique du monde, dont un grande nombre consacres a la percussion et aux rythmes.
II a egalement contribue a la composition et l'enregistrernent
de nombreuses musiques de films
qui ont ete primees comme Stargate, Les Ailes de la Colombe, Le Saint, Le Bossu de Notre-

et luthier Al Faraby (t 950 apr. J.-c.) au Moyen-Orient
sous la dynastie des Abbasides.
Toutefois, certains livres d'histoire de la musique attribuent au qanun des origines pharaoniques, epoque ou il etait connu sous le nom de sabkh, qui s~rait l'evolution du nozha assyrien.
Le qanun fut egalement un instrument extremernent populaire sous l'Empire grec sous Ie nom
de monokord. Cet instrument est dote d'un corps trapezoidal avec un cote droit. Sa longueur
varie entre 75 et 100 em et sa largeur entre 32 et 44 em. Le qanun est generalement muni de 87
cordes de nylon (qui remplacent aujourd'hui
les cordes en boyaux) assernblees par groupes de
trois et qui parcourent la table d'harmonie en reposant sur un chevalet installe sur cinq peaux
de poisson. Le qanun a une tessirure d'environ quatre octaves. ~a version moderne du qanun
est equipee de petites manettes qui permettent d'elever ou de baisser Ie ton des cordes et d'en

MAGED SEROUR nacio en EI Cairo, Egipto, el 11 de septiembre de 1963 en una pequeiia familia amante del arte y la rmisica. A su padre Ie gustaba tanto cantar que llego a alcanzar la categoria de profesional. Maged ingreso en el High Institute for Arabian Musical Studies a la edad
de quince aiios y fue enseiiado el kanoon por los mejores profesores del instrumento
de la
epoca, el Dr. Kamel Abdallah y Abdel Fatrah Mansy: Se graduo con honores y las notas mas
altas del institute en 1986. Muy pronto Maged se mcorporo a la orquesta mas famosa de
Oriente Medio del momento, la Al Maseya Orchestra, dirigida por el maestro del kanoon, el
difunto Ahmed Fouad Hassan, que Ie proporciono
el mayor cumplido que ningun rmisico de
kanoon pudiera recibir. Su primer concierto con la orquesta fue en Londres, Inglaterra, en el
Royal Albert Hall en reconocimiento
de los trabajos de Mohamed Abdul Wahab, el compositor y rmisico mirnero uno de Egipto. Entre los numerosos premios musicales concedidos a
Maged, recibio el primer premio por los trabajos ma~ creativos con el kanoon en 1993 por la
Academy of Live and Recorded Arts en EI Cairo. Tarnbien fue elegido el mejor rmisico de kanoon
de Oriente Medio en 1994 en el Cairo Opera House Musical Awards. En 1998, el Maged Serour
Egyptian Takht (conjunto musical) gano el primer premio al mejor conjunto en el Festival of
Arabian Music. Todo ello mientras estaba rrabajando con los grandes compositores de Oriente
Medio como Mohamed Abdul Wahab, Baligh Hamdy, Mohamed El Mougy, Sayed Mekkawy,
Helmy Bakr, Salah El Shamouby y Hossam Ramzy. Los cantantes tarnbien pedian a voces que
se incluyera el estilo unico de Maged Serour en sus albumes como Lady Warda Al Jazaireya,
Lady Nagat Al Saghirah, Mohamed
Abdou, Kazem Al Saher, Hani
Shaker, Amra Diab, Hossam Ramzy
y Rachid Taha. Maged trabajo en
muchas bandas sonoras de peliculas
egipcias, como Had El Seif, Nasser

A mediados de 105 70 se traslado a Inglaterra, y disfruto de gran exito como batena de jaZZ y
de estilo latino trabajando con muchos rrnisicos de jazz m~y respetados como Andy Shepp.a,rd
y Geoff Williams. Pero, cuando empezo a buscar nueva~ dlmenslones de sonidos de perCUSlOn,
se encontro a sf mismo dando un giro completo, volviendo a su pnmer amor, 105 tam bores
egipcios y 105 apasionantes ritmos de danza del Oriente Medio.EI sonid~ caracteristico de. la
percusion de Hossam y 105 emocionantes ntmos despertaron la imagmacion de Peter Gabriel,
que 10 invito a intervenir
en sus albumes 'PASSION' y mas tarde' US'. Hossam llego a
colaborar con muchos de los mejores rmisicos incluyendo ajoan Armatrading y Mari Wilson.
En 1994 Robert Plant y jimmy Page (ex Led Zeppelin) invitaron a Hossam a formar un grupo
de rmisicos arabes y a colaborar en su album de reunion 'No Quarter - Unledded' que gano un
triple platino, Esto llevo a Hossam a juntarse con Page y Plant en su reunion histories durante su gira mundial de 1995/96. Desde entonces, Hossam ha realizado numerosas giras con
varios artistas, como Pino Daniele de Italia al igual que muchos de los mejores cantantes arabes como Cheb Khaled, Rachid Taha, Faudel y Yesim Salkim, la cantante femenina mas popular de Turquia. Hasta la fecha Hossam ha publicado 18 albumes de danza egipcia y rmisica
mundial, con muchos de ellos dedicados a la percusion y a los ritmos del mundo.
Tarnbien ha colaborado en la cornposicion e interpretacion
de muchas bandas sonoras de pelfculas ganadoras de premios como: Stargate, Wings Of A Dove, The Saint, The Hunchback of
Notre Dame, Stealing Beauty y The Last Temptation Of Christ.

Sayedah" tarnbien significa "Ia dania", as! tarnbien podemos imaginar que atardeceres mas

EI segundo movimiento del 'Concierto de Aranjuez' del compositor espaiioljoaquin RodTt[Jo,
reconocido mundialmente.
Ha sido interpretado
por vanos arustas asombrosos como Chick
Corea en su cancion "Spain". Aqui Maged expresa sus sentimientos en esta rendicion de la
pieza, que derrite el corazon, con arreglos del profesor Yehya El M ougy.
EI Qanun
[ka-nunJ es una citara de caja punteada 0 salterio de Oriente Medio, Africa del
Norte y partes de Asia. Es un instrumento clasico del mundo arabe y de Turquia. En su diseno y forma finales, eI instrumento fue inventado en eI periodo Abbasy en la historia de Oriente
Medio por ellegendario
rmisico y fabricante de instrumentos Al Faraby (t 950 AD). Los libros
de historia de la rmisica, sin embargo, afirman que eI qanun tiene sus rakes rernontandose
a los
tiernpos faraonicos cuando se lIamaba sabkh, con rafees asirias donde se lIamaba el nozha. EI
qanun fue tam bien usado extensamente durante eI imperio griego y se lIamaba monokord. EI
instrumento
tiene un cuerpo trapezoidal con un lado rectangular. La longitud del lado mas
largo varia entre 75 y 100 ern (29-39 pulgadas) y la caja tiene una an chura de 32 a 44 cm (12,5
a 17,5 pulgadas). Habitualmente
dotado de 87 cuerdas de nylon (antiguamente cuerdas de trip a)
en grupos de tres que pasan por encima de un puente que reposa en cinco parches de piel de
pescado. EI instrumento tiene una gama de entre aproximadamente
cuatro octavos. Los qanuns
modernos destacan por eI uso de pequefias palancas de laton que pueden ser elevadas 0 bajadas
para realizar eI ajuste fino de los intervalos. EI rruisico apoya el qanun sobre las rodillas 0 en la
mesa con eI lado mas grande orientado hacia eI rrnisico y eI lado perpendicular
hacia su derecha. Las cuerdas se accionan por un plectro en forma de anillo hecho de cuerno de biifalo colocado en ambos dedos Indice. Hoy se emplean extensamente
instrumentos
similares en Asia,
como el santur indio e irani, asi como eI cimbalom hungaro, sin embargo estos se tocan utilizando finos 'rnartillos'.
