musical career began at the
age of three when he was
given his first drum, an
Egyptian tabla. Hossam's
passion and talent for per·
cussion was noted by his
family, and he was cncouraged to study under leading Cairo mu ic teachers. A

many Bedouin tribes, gave

origins of Middle Eastern

In the mid 1970s Hossam
drummer working with respected musicians
soon found himself turning full circle back
dance rhythms of the Middle East, He then
new sound since heard on hundreds of the

to his first love, the Egyptian drums, and the thrilling
incorporated his rhythmic experience into creating a
world's leading albums.
The distinctive sound of Hossam's Arabian & North African string arrangements, and his exciting
percussion, soon caught the imagination of Peter Gabriel. Hossam was invited to perform on
'Passion' and later 'Us' (he also worked on Peter's new album 'Up,),
Hossam then developed his skills in both string arrangements and production, and has played on,
arranged and produced many songs for some of the world's leading artists such as: }"tsilll Salkim,
Celick bid, Cheb Kbaled, Tarean, Raehid Taba, Laude), the Ci)psy Nngs, .. the list goes on.
In 1994 Robert Plant and JilllHI)' Pacze (ex-Led Zeppelin) invited Hossam to bring together a band of
Arabian musicians and work on their reunion album '"Yo Quarter.

Hossam also released 18 albums of Egyptian dance music for ARC Music, and in November 2001,

In this song a man tells his love to play hard in order to get what she wishes for. But he also asks
her to send him her spirit so he can sort out any differences between them on an ethereal level.
This piece was composed especially for dancing.

This song was sung by Egypt's most beautiful young singer, Miss Nagai EI-Jaghira. I heard it in
London in 1986 and suddenly time warped ... I was back in Cairo, smelling the hot summer breeze,
and realized how beautiful it is to have some rhythmic influences from other countries, especially
from Brazil.
3. Rannet khol-khali - Tbe ri'(~i,!g of HI] ankle bracelet
This folk song for a }oung lady tells her how the tinkling of the small coins dangling from her
ankle bracelet will attract the attention of her beloved young man.
4. Ana albi elik mayyal - Ny heartfat'fJ1!r:r you
In this song F-iyza lhmtd tells her man that her heart favours him.
I re-arranged the structure of the rhythmic sequences so it can easily be choreographed.

This is a Baladi song, verv famous in Cairo, which is used for dancing after a good, improvised
Baladi, as is the custom of musicians in the Farab Baladi (wedding celebrations of the Egyptian
"folk" people).
6. Bait el-ez ya betna - Ours is a bouse of goodness
This is a very special song from a film, about how this house is a house of goodness, tradition and
substance.
In this piece I featured the Egyptian kalmIa, a bamboo flute, shorter and wider than the na)'. It is
played by Ibrahim f:l-Kowala.
7. Ya bent el-sultaan - Dallghler of tbe Sullan
A heart-moving song from Egypt's greatest Baladi singer, Ibmfd AdaJ"ryya.
In this arrangement F. AI. Hassan begins with a taqsim (improvisation) but the melodic interplay is
between .I<mry EI Rabli on trumpet and Ibrahim on kawala,

This song, composed by the world famous :\Ir. Baligh Hamr!J has been used by almost every dancer
in Egypt. It is presented here in a dance style version: the intro and finale plus a tabla solo.

horre es 1986 in London, und plorzlich erlebte ich cine "Zeitverschiebung".
Ich befand mich wieder in Kairo fuhlte den heilien Sommerwind und wurde mir dessen bewufst, wie schon es ist, rhvthmische Einflusse aus anderen Kulruren zu haben, vor aIIem aus Brasilien.

Ein ganl' besoderes Lied aus einem Film uber ein Haus, das als ein Haus der Giite, Tradition und
des \,()hlsrandes beschrieben wird. Ich habe hier die agyptiscbe Kasala eingesetzt, eine Bambusflore, die kleiner und breiter ist als die l 'ay. Sie wird von Ibrahim EI-&a'Ola gespielt.

Lied von Agyptens groBtem Baladi-Sanger, Ahmed Adaa·ryya. In diesem

mediados de Ia decada de los 70 Hossam vino a IngIaterra, y disfrum de un gran exito como batede jazz trabajando con mtislcos respetados como Am!J Sbtppanl y Geoff Wlllimtu. Hossam pronse encontr6 dando un giro total bacia su primer amor,los tambores egipcios, y los emocionantes
ntmos de danza de Oriente Media. Luego incorporo su cxperiencia ritmica en Ia creaci6n de un

fuc un exiro mundial. Esto llevo a Hossarn a unirse a Page y Plant en su historica gira mundial de
reencuentro de 1995/96.
Un momento cumbre posterior fue su participaci6n como director de orquesta y percusionista
!ider para eI hisrorico album y concierto 1·2-3 Solei/, que reunio los talcntos de Kbaled, Taha, F"tlIIdel,
y muchos de los principales musicos norteafricanos,
