School Office: (805) 648-6836 Weekly Reflection Reflexión Semanal Awaiting the Holy Spirit En espera del Espíritu Santo Today’s readings and prayers commemorate the completion of Jesus’ time on earth and his promise of the Advocate. The reading from Acts records Jesus’ promise, “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem« and to the ends of the earth.” Jesus promises his disciples that the Holy Spirit will bring gifts that will bear great fruit. The second reading from the Ephesians lists some of the gifts and fruits that the disciples will receive: “a Spirit of wisdom and revelation resulting in knowledge of [God]” and also “the eyes of your hearts will be enlightened, that you may know what is the hope that belongs to His call.” The days between the Ascension and Pentecost were difficult for the frightened disciples as they prayed for the strength to trust Jesus’ words. The first chapter in Acts records that Mary was present with the disciples in the upper room. Her presence must have been a great comfort to them as she had been blessed by the Holy Spirit many years before at the Annunciation when she consented to become the mother of Jesus. Jesus knew that his mother would help open their hearts to the Spirit’s coming. Mary became an intercessor for the Intercessor. This is especially symbolic today as we celebrate Mother’s Day on this feast of the Ascension. We are thankful for our Blessed Mother’s example which guides our earthly mothers’ love and devotion as they act as intercessors throughout our lives. Our hearts are “gladdened with holy joys” as we await the commemoration of the coming of the Holy Spirit which begins the next chapter of our salvation history. Parish News Religious Education Lord Send Us Your Spirit and Renew the Face of the Earth Our Lady of the Assumption School We hear the Book of Genesis that the Spirit hovered over the waters at the beginning of Creation. It is that same Spirit which descended upon Mary and then descended upon Jesus at his Baptism. It is now that same Spirit who comes down from heaven in the form of the many gifts that animates the Christian Community at Pentecost. It is this same Spirit that transforms our offerings of bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ and continues to inspire, transform, and mission this community of faith the sole purpose of renewing all of creation. At Pentecost, the Spirit enflamed the Apostles with apostolic zeal so that they might go out to all the earth and proclaim the Good News. We are now emboldened to do the same. It is not for our own prestige and acclamation that the Spirit does this but so that the Body of Christ will be empowered. The gifts of the Spirit are meant for others as much as they are for ourselves. It is the Spirit’s desire that Her gifts of Wisdom, Knowledge, Understanding, Counsel Fortitude, Piety, and Fear of the Lord, build up those around us and bring about the many fruits that come from these gifts. We pray that all our Confirmandi, who this year, as in years past, will allow the Spirit to take root in their lives and enrich the Church with many gifts. What can be more attractive to those who seek to know the Lord and be refreshed than to see a community of faith that lives out its mission to bring Love, Joy, Peace, Forbearance, Kindness, Goodness and Faithfulness in our world. Through the Spirit we renew the lives of everyone around us and by bringing this Hope to those who hunger and thirst for acceptance and meaning in their lives. This is our mission at Our Lady of the Assumption Parish and it is the mission entrusted to the entire Church of Jesus Christ. May we bring this to completion by our tireless effort to let the Spirit of Christ first renew us so that we can renew the face of the earth and all around us. Rest in the Peace and Love of the Spirit. Share the Love and Joy of Christ. Blessings, Fr. It is important to recognize the signs of abuse and to know how to interact with possible victims. The best way to start a tough conversation with teens who may be at risk is simply to talk to them—ask what’s going on in their lives, and if they are okay. Signs of abuse include suspicious or inexplicable injuries, avoidance, or reliance on an older “friend.” For more information please visit http://www.missingkids.org/1in5. ICF Membership Drive The Italian Catholic Federation (ICF) will hold a membership drive after the 8:00, 9:30 and 11:00 Masses at OLA on May 15th. The ICF encourages and promotes faith renewal, apostolic and charitable works, heritage and social activities. It is a family organization open to all Catholics from all cultures. The ICF was established to provide a spiritual and cultural path for Italian Immigrants to the American way of life and, now, reaches out to all to support parish programs and charities. Please stop by and pick up the information available and meet members of the ICF who will be there to answer your questions and discuss our goals of outreach. We will be in front of the church and in the Friendship area. For further information, contact Carol Eller, 659-2255, or Ginny Ethier, 985-4346.
