Semana de Derechos Laborales
Fuerza Unida participo en una colaboración con varios grupos y organizaciones enfocadas en los derechos del trabajador y la gente inmigrante. La Semana de Derechos Laborales (SDL) es una iniciativa que se realizó en torno al Día del Trabajo en Estados Unidos
(Labor Day) y que tiene como objetivo mejorar el conocimiento de los derechos laborales de la comunidad Latina, así como de las instancias a las cuales pueden acudir en caso
de alguna violación a sus derechos. Este año, la SDL se enfocara en el tema “Las mujeres
en el trabajo” (Women in the workplace).
Durante la SDL, se llevaron a cabo presentaciones y/o actividades que incluyeron, entre
otros, los siguientes temas: los derechos de los trabajadores inmigrantes; la situación de
los trabajadores con visas H2A; acoso sexual; como presentar un a queja ante la administración para la salud y la Seguridad Ocupación (OSHA), y la División de Horas y salaries
(WHD); el derecho al salario mínimo y tiempo extra; el derecho a no ser discriminado;
el derecho a acciones colectivas; y los servicios de asistencia que proveen los consulados
de México.
Mediante esta iniciativa, se refrendan las alianzas con las autoridades laborales federales y
estatales, con el liderazgo comunitario y sindical, y se da una mayor visibilidad al trabajo
de protección que en material laboral realizan todos los días los Consulados de México
en Estados Unidos.

Labor Rights Week
Fuerza Unida is participating in a collaboration with various groups and organizations focused on workers’ rights and immigrants. Labor Rights week is an initiative
that revolves around Labor Day and aims to increase awareness and inform the
Mexican and Latino community of their fundamental labor rights, as well as the resources available to them in case they suffer any labor rights violations. In 2011,
LRW focused on the “women in the workplace.”
Presentations and activities addressed subjects regarding rights of migrant workers,
the situation of workers with H2A visas, sexual harassment, how to file a complaint
with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Wage and
Tour Division (WHD), the right to a safe workplace, compensation for workplace
injuries, the right to minimum wage and overtime, the right to nondiscrimination,
the right to collective actions, and assistance services offered by Mexican Consulates.
This initiative endorses partnerships among federal and state labor authorities,
community leadership, and union leadership. It also gives greater visibility to the
daily labor protection efforts of consulates in the United Status.

At last months membership meeting, Mark Brooks from the Wesley Health and Wellness
Center stopped by to speak about the services offered to the community by the center located here on the south side at 1406 Fitch Street. Included in this newsletter is their calendar
of events. All the classes and services are free and open to the public. The services include
primary care medical and dental clinics, support services like counseling, case management
and social services, family wellness and parenting programs, and church-based community
nursing programs. If you have any questions regarding any of their services please contact

El mes pasado en la junta de membresía nos visito, Mark Brooks del Centro de Salud Wesley donde nos hablo sobre los servicios que ofrecen a la comunidad. El Centro esta localizado aquí en el sur de San Antonio en 1406 Fitch Street. Incluido en este boletín esta el calendario de eventos del Centro de Salud Wesley. Todas las clases y servicios son gratuitos y
abiertos al publico. Los servicios incluyen cuidado medico y clínica de dentistas, servicios

Budget for District 4
Monday, August 29th at 6:30pm on the Southside was the District 4 proposed budget meeting/
hearing. Girien Salazar a Fuerza Unida volunteer attended and shared his notes with us and also
spoke at the last membership meeting about his experience. You can watch the proposed budget
video online at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ZUXAAkC7I0. There was a discussion about
Prop 2 that would allow city employee benefits to same sex partners, the community was asked to
give their opinion on the topic. There was also time allocated for community residents to voice their
concerns about the proposed budget. The majority of concerns focused on the big need for curbs
and sidewalks on the Southside as well as addressing long-overdue construction areas. Other concerns and comments included: gratitude from Big Brothers, Big Sisters Program for the city’s support of their program, money allocated to Haven for Hope to continue their services. There was
some discontent over the Parks and Recreation Department losing their teen music group instructors that would be replaced by “contracted” instructors. If you are interested in learning more about

Lunes, 29 de Agosto a las 6:30pm en el Sur de la ciudad se hablo sobre el presupuesto para el Distrito
4. Girien Salazar un voluntario de Fuerza Unida asistió y compartió sus notas con nosotros y hablo en
la ultima junta de membresía sobre su experiencia en esta junta. Usted puede ver el video sobre el

discusión sobre el propuesta 2 que daría beneficios a empleados de la ciudad que sean parejas del
mismo sexo, los residentes de la comunidad dieron sus opiniones sobre este tema. También hubo
tiempo para que los residentes dieran opiniones sobre lo que quisieran ver en la propuesta. La mayoría de las preocupaciones se enfocaron en la gran necesidad de bordillos y banquetas en el sur de la
ciudad y también en la importancia de acabar proyectos de construcción que ya se han empezado.
Otros comentarios o preocupaciones incluyeron: agradecimiento de parte del programa Big Brothers, Big Sisters por el apoyo que la ciudad les a dado, y el dinero que se le ha dado a Haven for
Hope por sus servicios. Hubo unas preocupaciones sobre la perdida de instructores musicales para
el programa de jóvenes en los parques. Los nuevos instructores serán empleados contratistas comparado a trabajadores de la ciudad. This fall we’ve been blessed with a lot of amazing volunteers with incredible stories of working in community. Girien Salazar is a young man
who called the office weeks ago to learn more about the organization and
figure out how he could be more involved with Fuerza Unida. He assisted
us immediately by attending a District 4 Proposed Budget meeting which
is part of the reason we are able to give you feedback on what took place
that afternoon. Girien is also a part of the Navy Reserves, and is studying
for his Masters in Practical Theology, he will be around Fuerza Unida as a
volunteer as time permits. Please acknowledge his commitment and love
for community when you see him. With our utmost respect, Thank you

Fuerza Unida
Fuerza Unida was formed in 1990 when one of the Levi’s Strauss factories on the South side of San
Antonio closed, leaving over 1,150 workers without jobs and with unjust severance pay. The
women organized themselves to demand fair compensation and better working conditions from
Levi’s. Through organizing efforts, Fuerza Unida has become involved in many other social struggles,
working on issues of women’s empowerment for self-sufficiency, women’s and labor rights, immigration, environmental issues and health education. Fuerza Unida empowers women workers and
their families to achieve social, economic and environmental justice through education, organizing
and advocacy. We host a sewing cooperative, food catering, youth leadership program, membership, education program and food pantry.
Fuerza Unida se formó en 1990, cuando una de las fábricas de Levi Strauss en el lado sur de San Antonio cerró, dejando a 1,150 trabajadoras sin empleo y compensación por despido injusto. Las mujeres se organizaron para exigir una compensación justa y condiciones de trabajo mejor en Levi's. A
través de los esfuerzos de organizarse, Fuerza Unida se ha involucrado en muchas otras luchas sociales, que trabajan en temas de apoderar a las mujeres para la auto-suficiencia, los derechos de la
mujer y laborales, inmigración, medio ambiente y educación para la salud.
