NOTRE DAME CHURCH HOUSTON, TEXAS APRIL 10, 2016 From the Deacon A pastor sneaked away from having to perform church services early one Sunday morning to go fishing. He told everyone that he was sick. But then he caught the largest fish he had ever seen. Sadly, he could tell no one about it. It was a different story for the disciples. Their giant haul of 153 fish was the greatest fish story of all time. The good news for them was that they could tell everyone. In fact, we are still talking about the great haul of fish more than 2,000 years later. But theirs was a story that almost never happened. St. John in his gospel points out that when the disciples went fishing, they did so at night and their individual efforts at catching any fish failed miserably. But with the dawn, there was Jesus standing on the shore. He is the light that dispels all darkness. With Jesus in command, upon his orders, the disciples cast their nets once more into the waters and the catch of fish was so enormous that their nets were close to breaking. Christ brings hope and makes all of our endeavors successful. On our own, like the disciples, we oftentimes labor in vain. Operating in the dark, we fumble and find ourselves unable to function well. Jesus brings new light into our lives. His words have authority and hold the keys to success. We find comfort knowing that God is with us and we find reassurance that we do not have to do everything on our own. With God in charge, we can always be assured of success. Within the story of today’s Gospel lies a secondary message. St. John records that there were 153 fish caught in the nets of the disciples. It has been noted that the unique number (153) of fish caught in the net represents the diversity and the great number of peoples in the world. The Church’s mission is to reach out to all peoples with the message of Jesus Christ. It is a universal message. Each of us has a part to play in spreading the good news. We need not possess unique skills for this mission. Jesus took simple fishermen and common people to spread the news of salvation to the world. As people baptized into the Catholic faith, we become a part of that same calling to be the voice of Jesus to all we meet. Jesus says the same words to us that he spoke to Peter and the disciples: “Follow me.” May we always follow in his light and know that with Jesus in command, we cannot fail.
