Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 2 Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 18, 2015 Through his suffering, my servant shall justify many. — Isaiah 53:11b GOD’S WORK OF SALVATION God’s work of salvation is the focus of this weekend’s readings. From the prophetic event of Isaiah to Jesus’ understanding of the human condition in Hebrews, concluding with Jesus paying our ransom in Mark, God is in control. There may be failings and misunderstandings along the way. We may move away from God, but at our conversion, God leads us back. Like James and John, we may let greed and power blur our vision of what Jesus wants us to know about the Kingdom; but tirelessly we are taught and re-taught what life in the Kingdom will be. Jesus has paid our ransom to ensure that we will share in the Kingdom. It is not unusual to think of Jesus’ ransom as a punishment that he endured. However, it is more accurate, and more like Jesus, for us to recognize ransom as God’s gift to us. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 4 Last Thursday (October 15) was the feast day of St. Teresa of Avila, our parish patron. She was a mystic and a Spanish Carmelite nun. A Carmelite friend of mine once said to me when she was still alive, “I’ve already got calluses on my knees praying for you every day.” More so now that she is closer to God. The Carmelites pray for priests daily so having the Priests’ Convocation on the same week they celebrate the feast day of one of their own, let alone our patron saint made me all the more inspired to write this article. And so for this weekend, I’d like to reflect on one of St. Teresa’s quotations. She said, “Christ has no body now but yours. No hands, no feet on earth but yours. Yours are the eyes through which he looks compassion on this world. Yours are the feet with which he walks to do good. Yours are the hands through which he blesses all the world. Yours are the hands, yours are the feet, yours are the eyes, you are his body. Christ has no body now on earth but yours.” The good that we do keeps the memory of Christ alive and make God manifest in a world that is slowly losing the sense of the sacred. It’s been over 2000 years since Jesus left, in the physical sense, that is. But through us, his physical presence can never be lost in the world. The work that we do is simply a continuation of the work that he began and to think that that work had endured and prospered for thousands of generations can only give us more hope and assurance that Christ continues to be present among and in us. The works of charity, the forgiveness and mercy we bestow upon each other and others, the truth we proclaim, the love and faith we profess all of which further reflect Christ’s living presence in the world. All the saints, martyrs and even those whose faith is known to God alone had been in some ways Christ’s hands and feet, eyes and ears, body and spirit. And so are we today and our children will be tomorrow. Our parish has been named after St. Teresa, but it isn’t simply a name of the church we are affiliated with or a member of. More than anything, it is a homage to a person who dedicated her whole life making Christ not only present but relevant at the time when the church was in turmoil, when schism was at its peak. If not for all the men and women who rose to the occasion, Christ’s presence would have long been diminished, if not totally eradicated. Their faith, courage and commitment have made Christ being physically present himself. That special mission is entrusted to us today and to make sure it continues for future generations; a work that is none other than perpetuate the memory of a man and a God who gave up his life so that we all might live and have eternal life. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
