Youth Day/Día Juvenil
40-47
Dear Friends,
I am so excited to celebrate our 26th Diocesan Congress and sixth Diocesan Youth
Day for the Diocese of Fresno!
Our theme, “United in the Feast”, is reflective of who we are as a People of God.
The Diocese of Fresno is blessed with its cultural diversity, which we celebrate in our
parishes. But when we gather at the table, we are one in our worship of our Lord and
in our sharing in the feast. What better way to celebrate than by gathering together
in a day of prayer, worship, and community?
I hope that as you look through what we have to offer this year at our Diocesan
Congress and Youth Day, you will find presentations that will nourish you and help sustain your ministry.
On behalf of the Office of Ministries staff, we look forward to seeing you at Congress and Youth Day, and we
thank you for your commitment to serving God’s People!
Blessings!

One Table, One Sacred
Journey, One Great Circle
of Friendship
REVEREND PATRICK J. TWOHY, S.J.
In the Eucharist the
Risen Jesus teaches us
and empowers us to live
a most noble way of life
together. We must learn
to be quiet in our inmost
being to receive all that
Jesus wishes to share
with us. We must also
be generous in reaching
out to those who cry out
to us for help. The
Lifeway taught among
the Coast Salish Native Peoples also teaches us
and empowers us to live in this noble manner.
We all participate together in one sacred journey
made holy by the blood and tears of Jesus and
the blood and tears of our Beloved and
Ancestors who have gone ahead of us. The
Spirit shared with us in the Eucharist and in the
Coast Salish prayers, songs, and teachings
opens our minds and hearts to a path of
limitless, selfless, generous love. This makes
possible our participation in an expanding circle
of friendship that includes all living ones in the
seen and unseen world.
We all live in one dwelling place, one Sacred
Home; the world of our experience and the world
yet to come, the world seen and the world
unseen, the world familiar to us and the world
revealed only to the graced and loving heart.
REVEREND PATRICK J. TWOHY, S.J.
Father Patrick Twohy is a Jesuit priest who has
worked with Native American peoples in the Pacific
Northwest for over forty years. He has published two
books: Finding a Way Home: Indian and Catholic
Spiritual Paths of the Plateau Tribes and Beginnings,

available on www.amazon.com. Father Twohy is

diversidad.

Love in the Body of Christ
What unites the work of Catechists, Youth Ministers,
Music Directors, Pastoral Care Givers, DREs,
Secretaries and Priests? The reason for all ministry
in the Church is the love of Jesus Christ, who has
personally touched our hearts, and gifted us with a
desire to love Him in return.
In this session we will turn to the Scriptures, Sacred
Art, the Saints and the Liturgy to discover the
Eucharistic Heart of Jesus which is at the center of
the Body of Christ, and also
consider how His love beats
strongly in the Heart of Mary,
Mother of the Church.
Come learn how to share simply
and beautifully the devotion to
the Sacred Heart of Jesus as we
offer and consecrate our ministry
to Him.

in Joy to Share God’s Love
All ministries seek to bring people into a closer
relationship with Jesus. A relationship that ultimately
brings them to the Table or Eucharist. This workshop
will explore practical suggestions within faith
formation to help children, youth and families see
how Jesus is active in their lives through the
relationships in their lives.
Pope Francis dreams of a missionary Church. How is
God inviting you to participate in His mission of love?
Explore ways you can experience the joy of the
Gospel by sharing it with others through practical

B.07 Students in the Holy Rosary
Praying the Rosary with Middle School students can
be a challenge, and rarely seems to entice them to
embrace the practice. Allison has developed an
interactive and interesting method for sharing this
powerful prayer with this sometimes forgotten age
group. This method includes thoughtful images, clear
explanations, and relating each mystery to current
topics facing today’s “tweens” such as social justice
issues, societal and personal struggles; the virtues in
real life; and relating the Sacraments every day.

2009 to share the wonder and awe of
living the Catholic faith in the every day.
RTY accomplishes this through retreats,
social media, books, blogs, and Apps.
Allison has experience in both radio and
television. Mrs. Gingras’ faith sharing

Father, Son and Holy Spirit”, encourages people to reconcile
their idea of who they believe God to be, with what is taught us
in Scripture and Tradition. Allison has a deep devotion to Our
Lady and the Rosary, opening every retreat with a special
multimedia Rosary, and has a hand-crafted line of various types
of Rosaries. In addition to her RTY-Blog, Allison is a regular

Take Joy
Eucharist: Meal, Sacrifice
B.08 Seriously
B.10 and Summit of Faith
The focus of this workshop will
be presenting joy as key to the
new evangelization. As Catholics,
we need to take seriously our
mission to bear witness of the joy
that comes from knowing and
following Christ, and be nourished at the Feast to
which He invites us.
That which gathers Catholics around the Table, is the
central focus of our vocation to follow Christ, and
that it centers our life of faith.

Christ to One Another: Being
B.11 Intercultural in Today’s Church
As members of the Body of Christ, we are called to love one
another. The concern of how cultural groups interact with one
another is one lens through which we may view this paradigm.
This workshop will provide an overview of culture and race in
the United States and how our particular history continues to
inform our present ministerial contexts. The second half of this
workshop will provide practical suggestions and methods for
the goal of developing intercultural competency skills for the
participants.

The Feast and Those
Who are Hungry:
An Introduction to
Catholic Social Teaching
The General Directory for Catechesis reminds us “the
history of humanity is not journeying towards
nothingness” but is taken up by God and
transformed in Christ. Inaugurated in the person of
Jesus, God’s reign of justice, love and peace is
among us. The call to conversion is fundamental for
catechesis (#102). Incorporate social justice
concepts into catechesis, reflections for liturgy of the
word and daily life in the Catholic Christian.

Gaudium:
B.13 Evangelii
Kerygma and Social Action
for Youth and Young
Adults
Pope Francis’ compelling exhortation, Evangelii
Gaudium, has ignited lively discussion among world
leaders, bishops, clergy, youth and young adult
ministers and catechists. His personality and words
are infusing the Church with new life and vigor.
Young and old alike find hope for a renewed Church.
Pope Francis’ contribution to the modern Church is
his insistence that the joyful proclamation of Jesus
as Lord and Savior and the commitment to social
action are inseparable. This workshop will survey
themes within Evangelii Gaudium and give you ideas
for lesson plans, class/group discussions, and new
service learning projects that address the structural
factors of economic injustice. The content will touch
on the following: Jesus and Evangelization; solidarity
with the poor; and social action that addresses the
reasons mentioned in Evangelii Gaudium for an
unjust economic order.

The workshop offers a look at
several recent surveys

Christian worship on the
believer. Why do people walk
away from the religion of their
birth and what can we do to

deeper into the mystery of our faith? What can
parish leaders do to stem the tide of those who walk
away from our Catholic family?

Wellness
C.02 The
of Hope
Wellness is not the absence of illness or suffering. However, despite
the challenges one might experience from tragedy, injury, or illness,
our Catholic faith provides an opportunity for redemption through our
suffering. Hope is not a wanderlust “Disney princess” emotion. It is a
real understanding and knowledge that God’s love can provide us with
peace and well-being, even to the point of what the presenters refer to
as a “life-giving death.” Hope draws from both faith and love to enable
all of us the ability to achieve “wholeness” and true wellness within
our body, mind, and spirit, despite the challenges we might
experience. This presentation will illustrate those truths through
moving and inspiring stories as seen through the lens of Catholic
teaching on faith, hope, and love.

Celebrates 50 Years!
“Lumen Gentium”, Vatican II’s monumental
document on the Church is 50 years old this year.
What is at its core? Why is it so important? What are

up to its proclamation on November 21, 1964 and
how has this document inspired and guided us since
then?
These are the issues we will be
discussing at this workshop.
Come prepared with a copy of
the Documents of Vatican II and

Social Media: Using the
D.03 Gifts of the Holy Spirit to
Share Your Faith
Pope Francis said, “the Holy Spirit is himself the gift
of God, and he in turn imparts
seven gifts”. Each of these gifts,
once properly understood, can
illuminate many ways to share
the Catholic Faith using social
and new media outlets. From
Facebook to Twitter, Pinterest to
Instagram, the Holy Spirit can
guide our New Evangelization
efforts.

D.04 What
Now is Spiritual Mothers
An uplifting presentation for women based on the
author’s book, “Blessed, Beautiful and Bodacious:
Celebrating the Gift of Catholic Womanhood”. This
presentation profiles the mission of women in light of
St. John Paul II’s landmark writings on the feminine
genius and theology of the body. This talk will explore
the gift of womanhood, and special emphasis will be
given to the unique exercise of spiritual maturity
inherent in all women and each vocation.

D.02 Experiences for Teens
Providing teens with quality prayer
experiences is great. Showing and
encouraging teens to pray on their
own is even better! This workshop
will provide simple and practical
strategies you can use to help
young people make prayer a
meaningful part of their lives.

The “Why” of Liturgical
Make a
D.05 Ministry
D.07 Joyful Noise
We put a lot of focus in our
ministry on developing our
professional skills (the HOW of
our ministry), and the repertoire
we sing (the WHAT).
In this workshop, we’ll spend
some time exploring and recommitting to the most important
part of our ministry--the WHY of what we do. How
would our ministry be different if we called ourselves
"Liturgical Ministers" and not just “music leaders,”
“readers,” or “servers” or “EMs”? How do we move
from performance to empowerment? How do we
balance the legitimate needs of personal piety with
the call to communal renewal? How do the musical
choices we make and the way we proclaim the Word
and serve at the altar bring to flesh the
transformative intent of Liturgy? This workshop will
explore these questions and more.
“Good music makes the
liturgical prayers of the Christian
community more alive…” (Sing
to the Lord – 5). In this
presentation, for both the new
and experienced music
minister, we will discuss the
various roles of this ministry and
how they work together at
liturgy. We will review basic music theory and brushup on techniques for learning new music.
ROB GRANT
If you have ever felt stumped on how to make a big
vision a reality, this workshop is for you! We will dive
into effective collaboration and networking with your
parish as well as with your Deanery and Diocese. You
will be given real life examples of true synergy and
help you define and plan your visions. Although this
workshop is framed for youth ministry, any ministry
that desires to use connections to improve the
effectiveness of ministry and free up time in your day
will find the information useful!

D.06 Aging
A New Ministry?
What about the older believers in
your midst (you know, the ones
who financed the parish)? Does
your parish provide catechesis
for them or do you simply offer
an afternoon of bingo or cards?
Remember, Jesus played with
children and taught adults! This
session will look at practical
suggestions for sprucing up your ministry with and to
senior adults.

D.09 Doesn’t Make it
Meaningful: Rethinking
Parent Sessions for
Sacramental Preparation
Most parish sacramental preparation processes
have required parent sessions. But often attendance
is weak, participation is low, and attitude is less than
enthusiastic. Sometimes it feels like the sessions are
a waste of time for everyone
involved. It doesn’t have to be
that way! This practical workshop
will help you design parent
sessions for First Reconciliation,
First Communion, Confirmation
and/or RCIA adapted for children
that are engaging, challenging
and effective.

D.10 Disciples: Faith in Action
in the time of Pope Francis
We will examine the underlying themes of Catholic
Social Teaching. We will emphasize practical
simulations to foster an understanding of the current
need for charity and justice in our world and we will
explore specific and practical ways to foster a spirit
of charity and justice in our ministries, highlighting
current initiatives promoting global solidarity and the
protection of the dignity of the poor and vulnerable.

Queridos Amigos,

United in the Feast
“Catholics & Love: This
is How We Roll!”
SERGIO LOPEZ
MIRIAM HIDALGO
Join Sergio Lopez as he shares some stories
about growing up Catholic. We will discover what
the Bible says about the meaning of true family
and what the Catholic Church is doing to bring all
of God’s children to the feast!
Jesus taught us to love God and one another. So
why do we still see so much hatred out there? As
young Catholics, how do we change that? Let’s
find out how each and every one of us can
change this crazy world we live in just by being
Catholic!
SERGIO LOPEZ
Sergio Lopez is a
former youth
minister and
worship leader from
the Archdiocese of
Los Angeles. As a
passionate
husband, musician,
and speaker, he has
dedicated his
ministry to helping
everyday Catholics
make a difference
in the world.
Currently, Sergio is
the U.S. West Regional Relationship Manager for
Catholic Relief Services, the official international
humanitarian agency of the U.S. Catholic community.
Sergio has been involved in leading Catholic
ministries since he encountered God at the age of
16. As a former Youth Minister and Worship leader
from the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, Sergio has
served numerous culturally diverse Catholic
communities throughout Southern California.
At the heart of his passion for ministry is a burning
desire to serve Christ in those who are poor and
excluded. For almost the last 10 years, Sergio has
sought to help Catholic young people and their
families to live out the call to be salt and light for the
world. In recognition of his efforts to inspire young
people to social mission, the Catholic Campaign for
Human Development honored Sergio as a Finalist for
the 2009 Cardinal Bernardin New Leadership Award.
Sergio holds a Master’s Degree in Religious Studies
from Mount St. Mary’s College in Los Angeles. He
and his wife “Ellie” live in Southern California. Mr.
Lopez is sponsored by Catholic Relief Services.

Miriam strongly believes in young people and strives
for forming a new generation of young Catholic
leaders who will live by Jesus’ message of love and
justice. She also believes

what one does not
know.” For this reason
she continuously
provides faith formation
opportunities for all to
learn, love, and live their
Catholic faith.
Miriam is a national
speaker for Loyola Press,

to listen for the Lord’s call in your
life.

La Misa Aburrida. ¿Por
Qué? (Tallera Bilingüe)
Boring Mass. Why?
(Bilingual Workshop)
Domingo.
This workshop will answer some of the most
commonly asked questions by teenagers about the
Holy Mass. Why do I have to go? It’s boring…It’s too
long…I don’t understand…Why
can’t I go to Church when I feel
like it? Why can’t I pray at home
or watch Mass on TV? Together
we will find simple ways to answer
these questions and many more,
so we can enjoy and understand
the meaning of the Holy Mass
every Sunday.
