Mission Statement
Saint Peter’s Church is a Catholic community devoted to deep and abiding
friendship with Jesus Christ. We strive to build upon the legacy of faith entrusted
to us by the Catholic pioneers who courageously established Saint Peter’s – an
ethnically and economically diverse community unified through the power of
the Holy Spirit in the truth and love of Jesus Christ. Mindful of this legacy as well
as our need for ongoing conversion amidst new challenges, today, in our fourth
century, we seek friendship with Jesus through our commitments to:
• Understand and proclaim His saving truth revealed in the
Bible in union with the official teaching authority of the
Catholic Church.
• Worship joyfully His living presence in the sacraments,
especially the Eucharist.
• Recognize His face in those we are privileged to serve and
protect, particularly the poor and vulnerable.
• Welcome Him in each other through our fellowship and
unity amidst the rich diversity of our parish community.
• Encounter Him and the beauty of His creation by preserving
our parish as a peaceful and prayerful sanctuary.
• Hear His personal call to holiness and help families embrace it
in all vocations, especially to priesthood or consecrated life.
• Imitate His generous self-giving as a way of life that expresses
our gratitude to Him and our love for God and neighbor.

Pope Saint John Paul II on Sports
Excerpts from a Homily at the Jubilee of Sports People
October 29, 2000
In Corinth, where Paul brought the message of the
Gospel, it was appropriate for him to refer to athletic
contests to spur Christians to push themselves to the
utmost in the “race” of life. Paul says everyone runs,
even if only one is the winner.
It is right to give thanks to God for the gift of sport in
which the human person exercises his body, intellect
and will, recognizing these abilities as so many gifts
of his Creator. Paul highlights the value of life,
comparing it to a race not only for an earthly goal,
but for an eternal one – a race in which not just one
person, but everyone can be a winner.
Playing sports has become very important today, since it
can encourage young people to develop important
values such as loyalty, perseverance, friendship,
sharing and solidarity. Sports have spread to every
corner of the world, transcending differences
between cultures and nations.
Because of these global dimensions, those involved in
sports throughout the world have a great responsibility.
They are called to make sports an opportunity for
meeting and dialogue, over and above every barrier
of language, race or culture. Sports, in fact, can make
an effective contribution to peaceful understanding
between peoples and to establishing the new
civilization of love.
Can the world of sport excuse itself from this providential spiritual dynamism? No! On the contrary, the
importance of sports today invites those who
participate in them to an examination of conscience. It
is important to identify and promote the many
positive aspects of sport, but it is only right also to
recognize the various transgressions to which it can
succumb.
The educational and spiritual potential of sport must
make believers and people of good will united and
determined in challenging every distorted aspect that can
intrude, recognizing it as a phenomenon opposed to
the full development of the individual and to his
enjoyment of life.
Every care
must be
taken to
protect the
human body
from any
attack on its
integrity,
from any
exploitation,
and from
any idolatry.
May this examination offer everyone – managers,
technicians and athletes – an opportunity to find new
creative and motivating zeal, so that sport, without
losing its true nature can answer the needs of our
time: sport which contributes to the love of life,
teaches sacrifice, respect and responsibility, leading to
the full development of every human person.
Psalm 125:5 reminds us that persevering effort is needed
to succeed in life. Anyone who plays sports knows this
very well. It is only at the cost of strenuous training
that significant results are achieved. The athlete,
therefore, agrees with the Psalmist when he says that
the effort spent in sowing finds its reward in the joy
of the harvest. This is the logic of sport; it is also the
logic of life: without sacrifices, important results, or
even satisfaction, are not obtained.
Every Christian is called to become a strong athlete of
Christ, that is, a faithful and courageous witness to his
Gospel. But to succeed in this he must persevere in
prayer, be trained in virtue, and follow the divine
Master in everything.
Lord Jesus Christ, help these athletes to be your
friends and witnesses to your love. Help them to put
the same effort into personal asceticism that they do
into sports; help them to achieve a harmonious and
cohesive unity of body and soul.
May they be sound models to imitate for all who
admire them. Help them always to be athletes of the
spirit, to win your inestimable prize: an imperishable
crown that lasts forever. Amen!

ST. JANE FRANCES DE CHANTAL
(1572 – 1641)
St. Jane Frances served God as wife,
mother of six, widow, and co-founder
of the Sisters of the Visitation of Holy
Mary with St. Francis de Sales in 1610.
She once wrote in a letter: “I’ll tell you
what Our Lord wants of you and of us
all, a humble and tranquil submission to
His most holy will in whatsoever
happens, for everything is, without
question,
ordained
by
divine
Providence for His glory, and for our
gain; henceforth to be indifferent to
health or sickness, consolation or
desolation, the enjoyment or privation
of what we most cherish, should be our
aim…..Let us remain sweetly humble,
and tranquil in the condition in which
God has placed us.”

The Feast of the Assumption is one of the most important feast days
of the year and a Holy Day of Obligation on the official Roman
Catholic Church calendar. By tradition, the holy day is observed every
August 15. This year, the Feast of the Assumption occurs on Friday,
August 15, 2014. According to Roman Catholic theology, Mary was
"assumed body and soul into heavenly glory" several years after her son,
Jesus, ascended into heaven. The miracle of the Assumption (or the
Dormition, as it is called in the Eastern Orthodox Church and also
celebrated on August 15) is Mary's triumph over earthly existence as she
is transported body and soul into heaven by her son, Jesus Christ .

dinamismo espiritual providencial? ¡No!
