CYCLE C NOVEMBER 29, 2015 - 1st Sunday of Advent
"But when these signs begin to happen, stand erect and raise your heads because your
redemption is at hand." Jesus instructs his disciples to take this posture of confidence in
the midst of a terribly disturbing situation. Describing his second coming, Jesus says
that on seeing this event unfold, "People will die of fright." And yet the disciples are
supposed to be pillars of strength. While others cower in fear, the Lord's followers are
somehow immune, with heads raised high. Why?
Well, presumably, because those who follow Christ--those who earn the distinction of
being disciples--have nothing to fear. On the contrary, when they have to "stand before
the Son of Man," it will be a happy occasion. But here's the catch: "disciple" is more
than an empty title. If we want to be counted among this confident crew, there are a few
things for us to do. Today's Gospel spells out these tasks, which are all perfect things to
pursue during Advent.
First, we have to make sure that our "hearts do not become drowsy." We are called to
stay awake in a spiritual sense, not allowing "carousing, drunkenness and the anxieties
of daily life" to numb us. We need to avoid whatever might reduce our ability to recognize and relate to Jesus, because we don't want his appearance to catch us "by surprise
like a trap." Advent is an ideal time to examine our lives to determine what activities,
priorities, or pastimes might be putting our hearts to sleep. Secondly, we need to pray.
We need to ask Jesus himself for "the strength to escape the tribulations that are imminent and to stand before the Son of Man." We can't do it alone. But with Christ's help,
we can be true, fearless disciples.
DECEMBER CCW MEETING Mark your calendar for the monthly meeting
of St. Mary’ Council of Catholic Women on Thursday, December 3, at 5:30pm in the
church hall. Soup & desserts will be served by members of the December committee
followed by a short business meeting. We also plan to prepare presents for St. Mary
homebound & nursing home residents. Be sure to attend so we can distribute these
gifts to be delivered to our parishioners. Don’t forget to bring a box of breakfast cereal
for the Emergency Food Box. We hope to see you there!
ADVENT EVENT—COOKIE SALE & SUNDAY BRUNCH
December 5 & 6, 2015
Celebrate this holy season by attending the St. Mary Council of
Catholic Women’s annual Advent Event. Homemade Christmas
cookies & candy will be offered at the bake sale table in the church
hall on Saturday evening after 4:30pm Mass for only $4.00 per
dozen! On Sunday, December 6, breakfast casserole, sweet breads,
muffins, juice & coffee will be served from 10-11am and the bake sale table will also be
available. A free will offering will be accepted for the delicious breakfast. Plan now to
stop down to St. Mary Church hall next weekend!
YEAR OF MERCY Our Holy Father, Pope Francis, has announced an Extraordinary
Jubilee Year of Mercy from December 8, 2015 to November 20, 2016. The Archdiocese
of Dubuque has a number of resources and opportunities to help you experience and share
God’s mercy.
Visit the Year of Mercy section on the archdiocesan website (DBQArch.org/ YearofMercy) to access: (1) an Instructional document from Archbishop Jackels, (2) information
about special liturgies during the year, (3) Cathedral Pilgrimage opportunities (as instructed by Pope Francis), (4) works of mercy service projects, (5) activities & media for
families, youth & adults and (6) prayer & music resources.
WINE & WISDOM Our next event will begin the Jubilee Year of Mercy. We will
gather at 6:30pm on December 2nd in the St. Henry dining room. Bring an appetizer to

De Nuestra Parroquia…
Muchas veces las visitas llegan sin avisar y, cuando así ocurre, dejamos todo
de lado por atenderlas; pero, cuando avisan que van a llegar nos esforzamos
por preparar, hacer compras, organizar, limpiar la casa, pensar en qué vamos
a cocinar. Son gestos de cuidado y cariño por esa visita que nos va a llegar.
Son gestos de hospitalidad.
Hoy comenzamos el tiempo de Adviento, es decir, de espera de la venida del
Señor. Ciertamente, preparamos la casa, colocamos los adornos de Navidad,
el Nacimiento, el árbol y hacemos todos los preparativos tradicionales.
Pero sabemos que eso no es suficiente para esperar al Señor, porque las lecturas nos anuncian signos extraordinarios y una venida al inal de los tiempos.
¿Cómo se prepara uno para eso?
Seguramente no con preparativos materiales; pero la lectura de Pablo a los
Tesalonicenses nos da pistas de lo que se puede hacer: ser compasivos unos
por otros, hacer crecer el amor entre nosotros, ser santos y hacer el bien para
el día de su venida. Así nos encontrará dispuestos a recibirlo como Rey y
Señor, cuando practicamos las obras de su reino.
Para pensar...
¿Qué puedo hacer yo a mi alrededor para preparar la venida
del Señor?
¿Me conformo simplemente con los preparativos externos?
¿Cómo mejoro mis relaciones con los demás?

PLÁTICA BAUTISMAL
Se terminó la preparación para el
bautismo para este año. No habrá clases

ALCOHÓLICOS ANÓNIMOS
El grupo de Alcohólicos Anónimos se reúne
cada sábado y domingo a las 6:30 p.m. en
la oficina hispana. Se puede entrar por la
puerta de la calle S. 1st.
INVITACIÓN PARA PAREJAS
Se les invita a los matrimonios y parejas de
la parroquia a una reunión los días jueves,
de 7:00 a 9:00 p.m. en el salón de reuniones
de la casa parroquial.
CELEBRACIÓN PARA NIÑOS
Todos los domingos se les invita a los niños al
sótano para participar en la primera parte
de la misa (celebración de la Palabra). Ahí
ellos pueden aprender algo del evangelio en
palabras que puedan entender. Los niños
regresan a la misa para el ofertorio.
HORARIO DE MISAS
Entre semana hay misa cada día en Santa
María: lunes (8 a.m.), martes (5:15),
miércoles, (12:10 p.m.), jueves (8:45 a.m.) y
viernes (6 p.m.). Hay misa en San Henry
cada mañana (excepto los lunes) a las 7:45.
REGISTRACIÓN
Si usted y su familia nunca se han registrado
como miembros de la parroquia Santa
María, o si han cambiado de dirección y ya
no reciben correspondencia de la parroquia,
deben hacerlo HOY mismo! No cuesta mucho
tiempo, y es muy importante.
