In these days, he spoke to us through his Son.” (Hebrews 1:1) Anyone who has struggled through the process of learning a different language knows how difficult it is to understand a new vocabulary, grammar, and syntax. On the one hand, as the well known joke goes—learning another language couldn’t be that hard since even the children speak it. True enough, but usually that is the first and only language that the children are learning so their progress is very rapid and thorough. For adults, it’s a process of retraining the mind with the concepts and processes of a new language. This passage from Hebrews points out a simple reality. In the Old Testament God spoke in a particular language that was familiar to the Israelite people. The Ten Commandments were the foundation of their relationship with God. From those Commandments came hundreds of other rules and laws that governed both their religious and secular lives. It was how God spoke to them, and it was the way in which they were accustomed to listening to him. Their liturgy centered on animal sacrifices that came from the best of their flocks, and from crop offerings that came from the best of their harvests. It was an effective language for their day and time, but it was a “partial’ language as Hebrews points out. Now God speaks through his Son who uses a radically different language. The language that Jesus speaks is the complete language of love. Mary and Joseph were careful to follow the law throughout Jesus’ childhood. Jesus himself learned the laws well and obeyed them. He also realized that his mission was to perfect that law. The old language prevented work on the Sabbath, including helping and healing others. The new language preaches healing and forgiveness on every day. The old language required an eye for an eye. The new language is love our enemies and pray for our persecutors. Let us live fully in this new law of love in Jesus. -Fr. Jack FR. MURPHY THANK YOU MEMORIAL DAY I just want to say thank you for your kindness and hospitality during my stay in The Parish Center will be closed on Monday, May 30, 2016 Placentia. Bernard Murphy, O.Carm Page Three May 29, 2016 FOR THE WEEK SOLEMNITY OF THE MOST HOLY READINGS Monday: 2 Pt 1:2-7; Ps 91:1-2, 14-16; Mk 12:1-2 BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST Tuesday: Zep 3:14-18 or Rom 12:9-16; Is 12:2-3, 4bcd-6; Lk 1:39-56 CORPUS CHRISTI Wednesday: 2 Tm 1:1-3, 6-12; Ps 123:1b-2; In this Jubilee Year of Mercy, the Lectionary’s Year of Luke presents a Gospel in which Jesus, who has welcomed, taught, healed, and shown God’s mercy to the multitude, refuses the Twelve’s demand to dismiss the crowd before him. Instead, he says, “Give them some food yourselves” (Luke 9:13). In Jesus’ hands, what little the Twelve has feeds five thousand (“men,” and probably as many women and children), leaving twelve baskets so the Twelve can continue Jesus’ ministry of mercy. Pope Francis has asked how we celebrate and live the Eucharist. Do we keep it to ourselves? Or do we “commune” not only with Jesus but with the multitude whom Jesus has given us to cherish? Entrusted to Jesus and shared with others, our limited resources can go a long way. Recognizing Jesus in the Eucharist demands that we recognize Jesus also in the hungry crowd. Adoring Jesus present in the Eucharist requires that we serve Jesus present in our neighbor.
