Jesus said to his disciples: "Do
not let your hearts be troubled.
You have faith in God; have faith
also in me. In my Father's house
there are many dwelling places.
If there were not, would I have
told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? And if I go
and prepare a place for you I will come back again and take you
to myself, so that where I am you also may be. Where I am
going you know the way." Thomas said to him, "Master, we do
not know where you are going; how can we know the way?"
Jesus said to him, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No
one comes to the Father except through me. If you know me,
then you will also know my Father. From now on you do
know him and have seen him." Philip said to him, "Master,
show us the Father, and that will be enough for us." Jesus said
to him, "Have I been with you for so long a time and you still do
not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the
Father. How can you say, 'Show us the Father'? Do you not
believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The
words that I speak to you I do not speak on my own. The Father
who dwells in me is doing his works. Believe me that I am in the
Father and the Father is in me, or else, believe because of the
works themselves. Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes
in me will do the works that I do, and will do greater ones that
these, because I am going to the Father."

Today's reading takes us back to the words Jesus spoke at
the Last Supper. It is part of the farewell discourse of
Jesus, and so prepares us for the celebration of his
ascension and the coming of the Holy Spirit in Pentecost.
The early Christians believed that Jesus was returning
soon (1 Thessalonians 4:16-18) and awaited this Parousia
with great hope. This belief was founded on his
promise to come back to them. John, writing in the
90's, reinterprets this futuristic approach: Christ is the way
and he will return to them through the Holy Spirit. This is
for John the only Parousia that matters. Because of this
certainty that Jesus is with them, the disciples do not need
to worry or be troubled about anything. Jesus insists on
the necessity of faith, stating that he goes to prepare a
place and will return for them. There is nothing to fear!

En aquel tiempo dijo Jesús a sus discípulos: "No se turben.
Ustedes confían en Dios: confíen también en mi. En la casa de mi
Padre hay muchas mansiones; si no fuera así, 2les habría dicho
que voy allá a prepararles un lugar? Después que yo haya ido a
prepararles un lugar, volveré a buscarlos para que donde yo
estoy, estén también ustedes. Para ir donde voy, ustedes saben el
camino". Tomas le dijo; "Señor, no sabemos a d6nde vas,
2c6mo vamos a conocer el camino?" Jesús contest6: "'Yo soy el
Camino, la Verdad y la Vida. Nadie va al Padre sino por mi. Si me
conocieran a mi, también conocerían al Padre. En realidad, ya lo
conocen y lo han visto". Felipe le dijo: "Señor, muéstranos al
Padre y eso nos basta". Jesús respondi6: "Hace tanto tiempo
que estoy con ustedes 2y todavía no me conoces, Felipe? El
que me ha visto a mi ha visto al Padre. 2C6mo, pues, dices:
'Muéstranos al Padre'? 2No crees que yo estoy en el Padre, y que el
Padre esta en mi? Las palabras que yo les he dicho no vienen de
mi mismo. El Padre que esta en mi obra por mi. Créanme: 'Yo
estoy en el Padre, y el Padre esta en mi. Al menos créanmelo
por mis obras. En verdad,
el que cree en mi hará las
mismas cosas que yo hago,
y aun hará cosas mayores
que estas, pues ahora me
toca irme al Padre".
La lectura de hoy nos
presenta tres ideas
importantes:
• Jesús le responde a Tomas que la esperanza no radica en un
método, sino en una persona: Jesús es el camino.
• La respuesta de Jesús a Felipe señala su perfecta unión con el
Padre.
• Tomas y Felipe son ejemplos de la dificultad que tienen los
discípulos en entender las palabras de Jesús antes de Pentecostés.
Reflexión Dominical
A continuación del lavado de los pies, Juan pone tres discursos de despedida de Jesús a sus apóstoles. Estos, que convivieron con el durante varios meses, deben dar ahora un paso para descubrir otra manera de convivir con Jesús resucitado y presente, pero invisible. Hoy leemos el primero de estos discursos. Al ir Jesús donde el Padre, no realiza una hazaña
individual, sino que nos abre el camino a nuestra Casa, la cual no se sitúa
muy arriba de nosotros, sino en Dios. Yo soy el camino, dice Jesús, en mi
verán al Padre. Cristo nos hace entrar a la familia divina. No hablemos,
pues, de acercarnos a Dios, como si estuviera lejos de nosotros. Dios
esta siempre con nosotros.
Esta lectura nos prepara para celebrar la venida del Espíritu Santo en
Pentecostés. Los primeros cristianos creían que el regreso de Jesús, la
Parusía, era inminente. Esta creencia estaba basada en la promesa de Jesús de volver a ellos. Juan, que escribe
su Evangelio en los años 90s, lo explica de un modo diferente: Cristo, quien es el camino, la verdad, y la vida,
regresara a ellos a través del Espíritu Santo. Para Juan, esta es la Parusía que cuenta. Debido a esta certeza de
