El Comisionado Paul Elizondo,
Representante del Precinto 2 del
Condado de Bexar, tuvo el honor
de prestar su nombre a la expansión
del Justice Center, infraestructura
que se inaugurará en marzo, y que
llevará por nombre “Paul Elizondo
Tower”, gracias a su colaboración
y a su servicio distinguido hacia la
comunidad del condado de Bexar.
“Con el solo hecho de ofrecer
tantos años de servicio público a la
comunidad, es posible creer que este
nuevo edificio merece el nombre de
Paul Elizondo, comentó el Comisionado del Precinto 4, Tommy Adkisson. “Este es uno de los trabajos
que requieren más tiempo, y los
comisionados debemos agradecer
la grandeza de nuestra sabiduría de
la misma manera que Elizondo lo
ha hecho”.
Con el fin de otorgar un merecido
nombre a la expansión del Justice
Center, el Comisionado del Precinto 3, Kevin A. Wolff, propuso
al resto de los comisionados reunir
sus votos, y llegar a la conclusión
de que el edificio debía llevar por
nombre “Paul Elizondo Tower”,
“Reunimos a nuestro equipo y
San Antonio y acudió a Central
Catholic High School, y continuó
sus estudios en St. Mary’s University. Él y su esposa, Irene, procrearon
tres hijos y hoy son felices abuelos
de tres nietos.

Online tutoring company targets students
Special to La Prensa
Students working hard to get
ahead or preparing for year-end tests
like the TAKS or SATs are turning
to online sources for help. However,
the Better Business Bureau warns
students to be wary of TutorNext,
an online company which earned an
F rating for failure to respond to a
pattern of recent complaints.
Complaints to the BBB allege
poor quality of tutoring services
and difficulty connecting to a tutor
despite the claim of “24/7 service.”
One student stated they waited
four hours for a tutor to become
available. Other students say TutorNext automatically renews
monthly memberships resulting in
unauthorized charges of up to $200
on their credit cards.
Students further allege that TutorNext does not honor requests
for cancellations or refunds. BBB
reports the company has failed to
respond to all 6 of their complaints
filed in the past seven months.
The company claims to offer
one-on-one supplemental education services for K-12 and college
students at www.tutornext.com. The
website invites students to ask questions about math, English or science
and states, “Connect to a Tutor for
Free!” When asked about the free
tutoring services, the company replies that the services are no longer
free and require a subscription.
TutorNext does not provide a
mailing address on their website and
encourages students to contact them
via email or by a toll-free phone
number. In addition, the company’s
terms of service, available on their
website, make reference to the
“jurisdiction for any court action
(being) in the State of Karnataka,”
a state in South West India.
A BBB investigation also found
that the company’s website is
registered in Canada. Consumers
are warned the company may not
be operating from a United Statesbased location.
When looking for an online tutoring company, students should
consider the following:
• Start With Trust - Consumers can visit bbb.org to check on a
company’s reputation and record
for customer satisfaction. You can
look for the BBB Seal and click to
confirm that it is valid.
• Read the Fine Print – Make
sure to understand a company’s full
refund policy and how to contact
them with any issues.
• Confirm Your Online Purchase is Secure – Consumers
should always look in the address
box for the “s” in https and in the
lower-right corner for the “lock”
symbol before paying. If there are
any doubts about a website, BBB
recommends right-clicking anywhere on the page and selecting

Freestanding children’s
hospital coming to San Antonio
By Lucia Almanza
The city of San Antonio will soon
have a network of efficient health
services available for children, including a freestanding world class
children’s hospital thanks to the
joint forces of CHRISTUS Santa
Rosa Health System and University
Health System.
The project became official on
Friday, Dec. 17, 2010. The two
large nonprofit health systems
signed a letter of intent outlining
their plan to work together with private practice, academic physicians
and community members to go in
the right direction toward a successful nonprofit network of children’s
services and the academic freestanding children’s hospital.
It has been a long awaited plan to
offer the children of San Antonio a
network of much needed efficient
health services going back to the
early 1900’s. San Antonio is the
largest city in the nation without
a freestanding children’s hospital,
and now both health systems are
meeting together to discuss future
plans.
“Our intent is to partner with
the University Health System and
create a new freestanding hospital
that would serve the needs of the
children in the San Antonio area
and all of South Texas. Also, to be
able to do significant research in the
area of treatment of children’s illnesses and also have major teaching
facility for the training of pediatric
positions,” said Patrick B. Carrier,
president and CEO of CHRISTUS
Santa Rosa Health System.
Carrier anticipates the project
will take about four years, and is
excited about the new possibilities
this new project will bring to the
community in San Antonio.
“We have children hospitals in
town and none of them have all
of the services that you would see
at a premiere hospital for example
we don’t have trauma, burn, or
bone marrow transplant services. A
greater consolidation to our services
in the community will allow us to
attract pediatric specialists which
are in short supply in the country
and would allow us to better recruit
tspecialists here to our community,”
said Carrier.
The letter of agreement is the
beginning to build a strong, efficient network of children’s services
needed. With the pediatric population increasing in the Alamo City,
a new complete, world class children’s hospital is what was missing.
An estimated $450 million will
be raised for the project but will
also need financial support from
the community. Children will be
provided with a more complete care
and parents won’t have to worry
driving around to different hospitals
to treat their children.

The Cowboy Breakfast; rise and shine up your boots
By Dennis M. Ayotte Jr.
[email protected]
This Friday, the 33rd annual free
Cowboy Breakfast sponsored by
Jordan Ford will be held at Cowboys Dancehall.
The unofficial kickoff for the
San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo
has been recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as
the world’s largest free, cooked
breakfast. For 33 years generations
of fans have gathered to participate
in the unofficial kickoff to the San
Antonio Rodeo.
“We have a couple hundred volunteers that make this event possible. It’s incredible to see everyone
donating their time and especially
getting up as early as 1 a.m. to
help out,” said Cowboy Breakfast
Chairman, Chuck Christian.
For the second straight year, the
Cowboy Breakfast will be held at
Cowboys Dancehall. Along with
the free food, four bands will provide entertainment for the crowd
that is expected to be between
30,000 and 50,000 people.
“We always look for ways to
give back. It’s a great cause, a good
charity and this a great way to show
the community we’re here to have
fun but also give back to the community,” said Danny Perez, general
manager and marketing director for
Cowboy Dancehall.
Pauline Reese, the Texas Music
Association’s reigning Entertainer
of the Year (the first woman to win
that honor) will perform for the
crowd. Reese’s beauty and energetic live shows has landed her on
tour with country music stars such
as Cory Morrow, Randy Rogers
Band, Jack Ingram, Kevin Fowler
and Pat Green.
The other artist playing as duos
at the breakfast will be Bob Livingston and Cam King and Matt
Skinner and Amanda Brown.
“We’ve come a long way from
just a couple of tables and a barbeque pit, to having a large tent
with four of five pits and to now
having families lined up at 3:30
in the morning for the free food
and live entertainment,” added
Lawson.
This year’s Texas-sized menu
will include the following (brace
yourself);
• 20,000 servings of Picante
Sauce
• 15,000 cups of coffee
• 12,000 chorizo and egg tacos
• 10,000 bratwurst sausage wraps
• 10,000 tamales
• 10,000 sausage and egg tacos
• 10,000 barbeque Tacos
• 8,000 sausage biscuits
• 8,000 bacon and egg tacos
• 5,000 pastries
• 2,500 servings of biscuits and
gravy
“The first time you come it’s
amazing because it’s not at three
o’clock on a Saturday or at six
o’clock at night after work. It’s
4:30 a.m. and you see people
standing in line waiting,” said Jerry
Strain, Jordan Ford’s marketing
director. “It’s just amazing to see
everyone out here. “
More amazing is that it’s all for
free with the help of the students
from St. Phillip’s Culinary Arts
program and title sponsor Jordan
Ford.
The unofficial kickoff for the San
Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo, the
Cowboy Breakfast Sponsored by
Jordan Ford raises funds for schol-
arships for students in St. Philip’s
College’s Culinary Arts Program.
“To me it was just the perfect
opening to pull this back into the
family and have a San Antonio
business sponsor the event,” said
Strain. “I thought it was just a
perfect fit for us after their sponsor
dropped out, two years ago.”
Starting at 7 a.m. Cowboys
Dancehall will open its doors for
a special Professional Bull Riding
event and additional live music for
anyone who wants to continue the
party indoors.
“To be able to host this event
is just such a thrill for us and it’s
exciting to say it’s at our establishment,” added Perez.
In addition, Jordan Ford will
also provide vans and volunteers
for a special delivery of more than
3,000 tacos and servings of biscuits
and gravy to wounded servicemen
and servicewomen undergoing
treatment and their caregivers at
Brooke Army Medical Center on
January 27.
“The Cowboy Breakfast board
is honored to have the privilege
to serve our military personnel
undergoing treatment and their
caregivers and show our appreciation,” said Christian.

been recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s
largest free cooked breakfast. For 33 years generations of fans have
gathered to participate. (Courtesy photo)

January is National Blood Donor Month
On any given day, on an average of once every 10 minutes,
University Health System’s blood
bank issues a unit of blood or a
blood component to be used for
treating a patient. When you think
about the amount of blood needed
to treat everyone that needs it, it is
staggering.
“Several members of my family
have had to stay in the hospital for
different things and many of those
times, they had to have blood transfusions,” says blood donor Eric
Moreno. “I think about this every
time I donate. I donate whenever I
can and I think each time, this could
go to help someone I care about.”
Each time you donate blood several patients can be helped and this
means several lives can be saved. A
single donation of blood from you
could potentially help save the lives
of as many as three patients.
Anyone at least 17 years old and
weighing 115 pounds or more may
donate blood as often as every 56
days. If you began donating blood
at 17 and donated every 56 days
until you were 76, you would have
donated 48 gallons of blood.
People in good health that weigh
at least 115 pounds and are between
17-70 years old are eligible to give
blood. All donations begin with the
registration; this gets potential donors personal info and is followed
by a screening to make sure that
taking blood will not hurt you or
the people receiving it.
The actual collection of blood
takes about five to seven minutes.
The entire process takes about 30
minutes.
“It really doesn’t take that long to
donate blood and it has never been
painful,” explains Moreno. “When
you really think about doing something like this, when you weigh the
pros versus the cons, there really
is no good reason not to donate.”

LA PRENSA DE SAN ANTONIO
Special to La Prensa
To successfully and safely
drive a car, you have to devote
100 percent of your focus and
attention to what you are doing.
When a person text messages
while they are driving, they are
taking a good amount of their
concentration away from the
most important task: driving.
A law passed last year in San
Antonio is now being strictly
enforced by the police. The law
makes it illegal to use your cell
phone for anything other than
talking. In the past few years,
the number of distracted driving
accidents has risen dramatically.
San Antonio’s new ordinance
prohibits using a “hand-held
mobile communication device
to send, read or write a text message, view pictures or written
text, whether transmitted by Internet or other electronic means,
engage in gaming or any other
use of the device, besides dialing
telephone numbers or talking to
another person, while operating
a moving motor vehicle.”
“The bottom line is texting
while driving is against the law,”
explains Sgt. Ernest Celaya of
the San Antonio Police Department. “It can be dangerous to
you, the driver, and to everyone
else on the road. There is no
text in the world worth taking a
life over.”
The texting ban applies to
drivers stopped in traffic, and
prohibits drivers from using cell
phones for anything besides calling — even when stopped at red
lights. When she proposed the
ordinance during her temporary
stint as a City Councilperson for
District 4, Leticia Cantu began
practicing what she was trying
to get made a law because she
knew how important it was for
her to serve as a good example.
San Antonio’s new ordinance prohibits using a hand-held mobile
communication device to send, read or write a text message, view
pictures or written text, whether transmitted by Internet or other
electronic means, engage in gaming or any other use of the device,
besides dialing telephone numbers or talking to another person, while
operating a moving motor vehicle. (Courtesy photo)
“I knew this was something
that was very important. The city
gets the statistics on how dangerous it is to drive and text and I
knew I needed to do something
while I had this opportunity,”
Cantu explains. “But, I wanted
to make sure I was the best role
model I could be. So, from before
the ordinance was passed until
now, I never check texts while
driving.”
Younger drivers are especially
at risk; growing up in the information age, they are likely to
think they can handle the multitasking involved in texting and
driving. Sadly though, they are
often wrong.
“Teenagers growing up in this
day of smart phones and social
networking, they think they can
handle multitasking with everything they do,” Cantu says.
“That’s not the case though.
They may be better at it, since
they’ve grown up with it, but
studies show nobody can drive
effectively and safely while
texting or checking and sending
emails, etc. It just can’t be done.”
There are several recommended options for dealing with cell
phones while in a car. Many
newer model cars are equipped
with hands-free technology that
allows a driver to make calls and
texts without having to pick up
their phone. If one of these isn’t
available in your car, they can be
bought and installed. “When it is
something that is time-sensitive
or important for work, if I have
to pull over, I will,” says Cantu.
“I don’t like doing that, but
sometimes I do understand it is
important. I would rather wait till
I get home to check them then
though and that’s what I really
recommend.”

esa meta, esperan propuestas claras
y enriquecer a nuestra nación”, dijo
entonces Obama.
En 2010, el objetivo principal de

Obama era que el Congreso aprobase
la reforma del sistema de salud. La
logró, aunque ahora los republicanos
de la Cámara Baja se empeñen en
desbaratarla.
limpia.

San Antonio Independent School
District.
Elizondo fue reelegido en 1980
para la 67va Legislatura, en donde
de nuevo sirvió para House Committee for State Affairs y para el
House Committee for Constitutional

The “decade of downtown” goes digital
Mayor Julian Castro is working hard to bring downtown to
all the residents of San Antonio.
There’s a free app to make “el
Centro” more central to our lives
– and accessible on our smart
phones, as well as a state-of-theart moveable kiosk.
By Angela Covo
[email protected]
Imagine a downtown that is
navigable – a place where you
know what’s what and where to
get it.
Turns out there’s an app to
make downtown San Antonio
accessible to everybody with a
cell phone.
The Downtown Alliance (DA),
a nonprofit organization dedicated to making downtown a better
place to live, work, shop, eat and
be entertained, partnered with
local leading mobile technology
firm BiBiSi to offer the application for free.
And that’s not all. Helping
more then 750,000 people a year
in downtown San Antonio, and
with the introduction of their new
mobile information kiosk just
last week, Centro San Antonio
Amigos plan to help even more.
The Centro San Antonio Amigos rolled out a mobile kiosk as
well – like a hot dog cart, except
it has maps, a charging station
for cell phones, and videos, and
shade, according to the DA.
It features two 22-inch LCD
TV screens, four exterior marinegrade mounted speakers, a radio,
DVD, CD, and jump drive connections to the TV. The charging
stations will work for the top
five phone models, including Iphones and BlackBerries.
And the trailer is green – it can
operate on its own for up to 24
hours through a combination of
solar power and an internal battery source according to the DA.
The new Centro Mobile Information Kiosk trailer will be out
daily between 9:30 a.m. and 8:30
p.m. in various high traffic areas
within the Public Improvement
District, including the Street
Car Station on Alamo, Market
Square, and La Villita.
They will also provide support for the City of San Antonio
Convention and Visitor Bureau
during the construction and renovation of the Visitor Center on
Alamo between January 17 and
early March.
Get the app
Thanks to the DA, the latest
technology to make it easy for
everybody to be knowledgeable
when it comes to “El Centro”
or the downtown of the seventh
largest city in the U.S. is ready
to download.
The new free mobile app from
the nonprofit is online at www.
downtownsanantonio.org and
features a downtown business
directory with maps, GPS enabled directions, events, mobile
coupons and more.
“We are always looking for
additional ways to improve the
downtown experience, and getting to and around downtown are
frequent questions for tourists
and locals alike,” Downtown
Alliance President Ben Brewer,
said.
Jumping into the digital fray is
not a bad idea – in fact, it could
be essential.
According to Nielsen Wire,
“Smartphones are expected to
overtake feature phones in the
U.S. by 2011, and the popularity
of mobile apps will only grow.”
So more and more, people are
relying on their mobile phones
for information on the go. But
you can even take advantage if
you don’t have super smartphone
with internet access.
“By just texting the word
“DOWNTOWN” to 45384, you’ll
receive a message with a phone
number to call during business
hours for a live person to help you
get what you need downtown,”
Alyse Garber, spokesperson for
the Downtown Alliance, ex-
plained.
The mobile app developed
by BiBiSi offers texting (SMS)
component that can provide assistance even if the user can’t access
the internet through their phone.
Garber explained to access
the app, users can text the word
“downtown” to 45384.
“They will immediately receive
a text message back with a link to
the app, formatted to fit their cell
phone model,” she added.
Soon, users will also be able
to type in the Downtown Alliance URL (www.downtownsa.
org) into their mobile browser to
access the app.
“The unique thing about this
project is that we didn’t just make
it work as an application for one
carrier, we configured it to work
with the majority of smartphones
across all the major carriers,
which we feel is the future of
mobile applications,” BiBiSi
Mobile President Enrique Garza
explained.
According to the DA, the app
will continue to grow and evolve
to fit the needs of downtown. For
example, plans for the app include self-guided historical tours,
real-time parking spot counts and
last minute specials.
“It is our goal that this becomes
the go-to resource for everyone in
downtown San Antonio, whether
they live off of South Flores, in
Stone Oak, San Francisco, or Sao
Paulo,” Brewer added.
STATS ABOUT GOING
MOBILE FROM THE DOWNTOWN ALLIANCE
• According to the San Antonio
Convention and Visitors Bureau,
about 25 million people visited
San Antonio last year. Nielsen
Ratings for Mobile Usage claim
that as of January 2010, there is
a 40 percent smartphone penetration in the United States. It’s possible that 10 million visitors then
could benefit from the app – and
that doesn’t count us – the locals!
• By 2006, 2.3 billion people
had smart phones, which was
twice the number of people using
the internet.
• By 2008, the typical U.S.
cell phone subscribers sent and
received 357 text messages a
month.
• Cell phone users read 90
percent of all text messages, but
studies suggest e-mail messages
often reach only a 20-50 percent
open rate according to a release
by the DA.
So don’t miss any great discounts or events. Get the new,
free downtown app for smartphones by texting the word
“DOWNTOWN” to 45384. For

Eat smart with Walmart
By Dennis M. Ayotte Jr.
[email protected]
Last week, Walmart and First
Lady Michelle Obama outlined
five key initiatives to provide customers with healthier and more
affordable food choices.
“We applaud First Lady Michelle Obama’s leadership and
commitment to this important
cause,” said Leslie Dach, executive vice president of corporate
affairs at Walmart. “Few individuals have done more to raise
awareness of the importance of
healthier—especially among
children—than she has.”
Dach went on to explain that
First Lady Obama was the catalyst
that helped make their efforts a
reality and her spirit of collaboration made Walmart’s commitment to bring better nutrition to
kitchen tables across this country
even stronger.
Walmart is the nation’s largest
grocer and in its hard work to
make healthier foods more available will start by reformulating
thousands of everyday packaged
food items by 2015.
They will work with suppliers
and they’re own brand, Great
Value, to reduce sodium by 25
percent, added sugars by 10 percent and eliminate all reaming
industrially produced trans fats.
Secondly, Walmart will make
healthier choices more affordable
and save customers an estimated
$1 billion per year on fresh fruits
and vegetables.
In order to accomplish their
goal, Walmart will cut unnecessary costs out of their supply
chain and reduce the price premium on “better-for-you” items
that contain reduced sodium,
sugar and fats.
Furthermore, Walmart is developing strong criteria for a simple
front-of-package seal that will
help shoppers identify healthier
food options like whole grain
cereals or pastas and unsweetened
can fruits.
“With more than 140 million customer visits each week,
Walmart is uniquely positioned to
make a difference by making food
a healthier and more affordable
to everyone,” stated Bill Simon,
president and CEO of Walmart
U.S.
In addition, Walmart will provide solutions to building stores in
underserved communities in need
of fresh and affordable groceries.
“No family should have to
choose between food that is
healthier for them and food they
can afford,” said Simon. “We
are committed to working with
suppliers, government and nongovernmental organizations to
provide solutions that help Americans eat healthier and live a better
life.”
Lastly, Walmart will increase
charitable support for nutritional programs that help educate consumers about healthier
food choices. Walmart and the
Walmart Foundation donated $2
billion to help fight hunger and
donated fresh, nutritious foods
to food banks across the U.S.
last year.
“Our customers tell us they
want a variety of food choices and
need help feeding their families
healthier foods. At Walmart, we Walmart is the nation’s largest grocer and in its hard work to make
are committed to doing both,” healthier foods more available will start reformulating thousands of

products where they are not really
needed,” added Thomas.

Mayor wraps up SA2020 with final forum
By Cristina Blackwell
[email protected]
More than 1,000 residents gathered Saturday morning to participate in the fifth and last public
discussion and workshop, SA2020
–Mayor Julián Castro’s long-range
plan to chart the city’s future in
the next decade in hopes to make
San Antonio one of America’s
greatest cities.
“The hard work, the real effort
starts now,” stated Castro.
The gathering, titled “Putting
it all Together,” kicked off at
the TriPoint YMCA with a complimentary breakfast followed
by a performance by Roosevelt
High School Drumline. Residents
mingled with one another while
others carefully studied the meeting agenda.
“The kind of participation that
we’ve had has been absolutely
amazing,” said Facilitator Ben
Warner from JCCI, who’s helped
guide SA2020 gatherings since its
inception in September.
At previous forums, attendees
were grouped by tables, where
they listed what they liked and
disliked about the city, and what
improvements they wanted to see
over the next 10 years. This time,
they were asked to connect those
vision statements in areas such
as community safety, downtown
development, education, family
wellbeing, health and fitness and
others.
“What we’re really talking
about is the concept of a constellation –picking out the key things
and finding out how they connect
and influence each other. Maybe
improving things in education will
help improve things in health and
fitness,” said Warner.
As participants drew connections, they were asked to think
about ways in which San Antonio
will be successful in the year 2020.
Next, they provided ideas for joining together to move the vision
forward as well as their personal
commitment to reach the vision.
“I’m very excited about our
future,” stated Margaret Moreno,
a south side resident. “With these
meetings we’re growing as a
family, and I think this kind of
involvement is really going to help
reach our goals.”
SA2020 stemmed from Mayor
Henry Cisneros’ long-range planning project launched in 1983,
Target ’90, which contributed to
the creation of the Alamodome, a
biosciences research park, and the
downtown UTSA campus, among
other developments.
On March 19, SA2020 organizers will release a plan at a
community event that includes
long-range goals and details on
how San Antonio’s progress will
be measured. For more information, or to watch the meeting via
webcast, visit sa2020.org.
“We now know what needs to next decade,” said Castro. “And
be accomplished to make San An- the next months will be about puttonio a greater community in the ting action to the ink on the paper.”
Mayor Julián Castro joined by civic and business leaders as well as
approximately 1,000 citizens gather to wrap up SA2020 at TriPoint
to discuss the future of San Antonio. (Photo, Cristina Blackwell)

formation of people in faith and
educating leaders for the common good through community
service, integrated liberal arts
and professional education, as
well as academic excellence.
Around 70 percent of St.
Mary’s students participate in

Steelers vs. Packers at first glance
Peter Schrager
FoxSports.com
Prepare yourself, folks.
During the next two weeks, you’re
going to be hit over the head with more
Super Bowl discussion and debate
than you might be able to physically
handle. As someone far smarter and
pithier than me once described the
two weeks before the Super Bowl —
we’re about to enter the “”paralysis of
analysis” zone.
Yes, until Feb. 6, you’re going to
read and hear it all. We’ll be flooded
with all the many lessons Aaron Rodgers learned or didn’t learn from Brett
Favre, the lessons Sam Shields and
Tramon Williams have learned from
Charles Woodson and the lessons Ben
Roethlisberger learned after taking that
fateful trip down to Milledgeville, Ga.,
last summer.
We’ll see more than enough NFL
Films footage from two franchises that
have combined for 18 league championships and 49 Pro Football Hall
of Famers, hear the name Lombardi
even more than usual, and maybe —
just maybe — get a few Lynn Swann
highlights.
Screaming talking heads on TV will
debate if Dick LeBeau’s the “greatest
defensive mind ever,” they’ll shout at
each other until they’re red in the face
over which of these two die-hard fan
bases is the superior clan, and they’ll
lose their breath over some worthless
argument surrounding Terrible Towels
and cheese-shaped hats made of foam.
Points will be made, heads will be nodded and there will be countless laughs
at jokes that aren’t funny.
The Black Eyed Peas will be involved in a news story at some point,
and so might a media-starved ex-player
promoting a soup product or fashionable sports drink. Media Day will bring
out the freaks, the few days following
Media Day will feature members
of the media grasping at straws for
far-reaching angles that haven’t been
exhausted, and the bookmakers out in
Vegas will share their exotic prop bets
to a nation salivating for something
new to chew on.
As for the actual football?
You’d be surprised, but there usually
isn’t that much X’s and O’s discussed
during these two endless weeks of
buildup. If there’s anything that’s lacking from the dead zone between the
conference championship games and
the Super Bowl, it’s the actual analysis
of the game, itself.
In truth, this one has all the makings
of a classic. Off the field, it has all those
bells and whistles, too. On the field? It
should be awesome. Here are my five
first-glance things to watch for in a
Steelers-Packers Super Bowl.
1. The two 3-4 masters and the
quarterbacks who just don’t go down:
With apologies to Rex Ryan and Wade
Phillips, defensive coordinators Dom
Capers and Dick LeBeau are the top
two 3-4 defensive minds in the NFL,
and between them, combine for more
than 50 years of NFL coaching experience. The difference in their respective
Super Bowl game plans, of course, will
be the two quarterbacks their respective pass-rush happy 3-4 defenses will
be facing.
Capers, a former NFL head coach
with both the Panthers and Texans,
relies on endless pass rushing pursuit
from All-Pro outside linebacker Clay
Matthews. Steelers quarterback Ben
Roethlisberger might not evade Matthews with agility and sheer speed, but
Roethlisberger’s nearly impossible to
bring down at first contact. His carnival
of pump fakes and dips and dunks,
paired with an uncanny ability to find
receivers in stride on third-and-long,
make him just about immune to a
ferocious pass rush.
Aaron Rodgers, on the other hand,
is the closest thing to Steve Young
that we’ve seen since the 49ers Hall
of Fame quarterback retired in 2000.
In addition to his Young-like accuracy,
Rodgers is arguably the top scrambling
quarterback in the NFL. And that includes Michael Vick. James Harrison
and LaMarr Woodley might get to
Rodgers in the Super Bowl, but his
ability to make nothing out of something with his feet creates a potential
matchup problem for LeBeau and his
hard-charging defense.
Everyone knows about Roethlisberger and Rodgers’ incredible
arms and their ability to hit receivers
downfield. Their abilities to evade
hard-pressing pass rushers, though,
could actually play bigger roles in
determining the better team in Dallas.
Either way, both Capers and LeBeau’s game plans will be fascinating to
watch unfold.
2. The Packers and their newly
found running game: During the preseason, I sat with a few friends who’d
just finished their fantasy football draft.
One of my buddies, a cat named Scott,
obnoxiously boasted all afternoon
about his “Sleeper Pick of the Year”
— Packers running back James
Starks. Scott, of course,
is one of the seven
State University of
New York — Buffalo football fans
in America, and
thus, had a bit of
a paternal love for
Starks, his fellow
Buffalo Bull.
After a season battling injuries and finding himself in and out
of the active lineup,
Starks finally made
an impact on the
Packers’ offense in
the final month of
the season. During
the playoffs? He’s
provided the necessary balance to
a Packers offense
that struggled to
find a running
game for the bulk of the season.
In Sunday’s NFC Championship
Game at Chicago, Starks carried the
ball 22 times for 74 yards with a touchdown. In Green Bay’s three postseason
games, he’s averaged 23.3 carries
a game. Heading into the playoffs,
everyone pointed to the Packers’ running game as the team’s Achilles’ heel.
Now? It’s a strength.
Starks didn’t do much for Scott’s
fantasy football team, but he’s doing a
heck of a lot for the Packers this month.
Of course, for all of his success this
postseason, James Starks hasn’t seen
anything like the Steelers’ defense,
which gave up an NFL all-time best
63 rushing yards per game in 2010.
The Jets, one of the top rushing
teams in the game, scrapped for just
70 yards on Sunday. New York’s the
only team to top the 100-yard mark
all season vs. the Steelers, and did so
in Week 15.
The spotlight will be on bigger
names, but James Starks — the former
Buffalo Bull — might be the most
important player on the field in Dallas.
3. The fast start: After Jim Cornelison’s riveting rendition of the national
anthem got a frenzied Chicago crowd
rocking for Sunday’s opening kickoff,
the Packers started on fire and numbed
any momentum the Bears might have
had in the early moments of the NFC
Championship Game. You know that
image of a balloon being popped by a
pin and weezing its way into oblivion?
That was Soldier Field five minutes into Sunday’s game.
The Packers’ first offensive series could serve as a
study for high school football
teams looking to analyze
“The Perfect Drive.” Rodgers completed four passes for
76 yards and scrambled for the
game’s first score. They scored on
a Starks touchdown a few minutes
later, stretching the lead to 14-0. The
rest was history.
A few hours later in Pittsburgh,
the Steelers opened the game with
a clock-eating nine-minute scoring
drive and jumped to an early 7-0
lead. They’d extend that lead to 24
points before giving up 19 consecutive to close out the game. Both
teams started with well-defined
game plans, executed them perfectly, and did enough damage
in the first half to withstand late
comebacks from their rivals.
Though the Steelers did come
back from a 14-point halftime
deficit vs. the Ravens two weeks
ago, it’ll be hard to do the same on a
neutral field versus an offense as highpowered as Green Bay’s. The fourth
quarter might be when it matters most,
but those first 15 minutes could very
well be when this Super Bowl is won.
4. Shootout Part II? Doubtful. The
most entertaining regular-season game
of the 2009 season pitted the slumping Steelers vs. the red-hot Packers
in a late December aerial show at
Heinz Field. Rodgers completed 26
of 48 passes for 383 yards and three
touchdowns that afternoon, while
Roethlisberger torched the Packers for
503 yards and three scores, including
a game-winning touchdown pass to
then-rookie Mike Wallace late in the
fourth quarter.
What really killed the Packers in that
game? Besides their horrendous pass
defense? Penalties.
Five of Green Bay’s seven penalties
in that Week 15 game resulted in first
downs for Pittsburgh. The Steelers,
as they usually do, capitalized and
optimized their opportunities.
Can we expect a similar type of
game two weeks from now? I highly
doubt it. Rodgers and Roethlisberger
are playing well, but neither of these
two defenses is giving up 400 yards in
the air anytime soon.
Green Bay’s two young defensive
backs — Tramon Williams and Sam
Shields — have played above and beyond what the Packers ever expected
from them this season. Meanwhile, the
Steelers defense has a certain guy with
long hair named Pola-something in the
defensive backfield this time around.
There’s no chance Rodgers puts up the
fireworks he did last season against
Pittsburgh with No. 43 in the lineup.
5. The ‘Ol vets: In the end, this one
might come down to veteran players
making the biggest plays down the
stretch. In Green Bay, there’s wide
receiver Donald Driver, playing in
his first Super Bowl after 12 seasons
in the league, and Charles Woodson
— the 1998 Heisman Trophy winner
— who’ll be suiting up for his second
shot at a Super Bowl after his Raiders
were blown out by the Buccaneers in
Super Bowl XXVII. Woodson has
been waiting eight years to return to
the big stage. Chad Clifton’s a longtime Packer but has yet to play in the
big game, while Ryan Pickett suited
up for the Rams in their loss to the
Patriots back in 2001. To be certain,
there haven’t been many Super Bowl
highlights, let alone memories, from
the Green Bay locker room.
Meanwhile, in Pittsburgh, most of
the guys suiting up on Feb. 6 already
have Super Bowl rings, if not two.
Three players — Larry Foote, Antwan
Randle El, and Bryant McFadden —
won rings with the Steelers, left to
play elsewhere, only to come back for
this 2010 campaign. Been there, done
that? You can say that again. Even
coach Mike Tomlin, in just five years
in Pittsburgh, is the only head coach
in NFL history to coach in two Super
Bowls before age 40.
If we’ve learned anything in the
past three weeks, it’s that this Packers
team isn’t scared of challenges. To
be certain, they do not become weeping willows when under the national
spotlight. But will the bright lights of
the Super Bowl be an entirely different
ballgame for this year’s road warriors?
Will the Steelers’ edge in Super Bowl
experience make a difference? From
the coaching staffs down to the special
teams, I can’t recall a Super Bowl
matchup with a bigger differential in
the two teams’ Super Bowls played.
Then again, it hasn’t fazed this Packers team this month. Why should such
a silly thing as big-game experience
matter now?
And now with those five things out
of the way, let’s get back to what really
matters . . . what song will the Black
Eyed Peas open up with at halftime?
Ah, the Super Bowl. There’s really
nothing like it.
