Hello again, Neighbors and Friends!
Happy Birthday, America! I always enjoy Independence Day and the chance to celebrate
the ideals upon which this nation was founded. I hope each of you has an enjoyable Fourth
of July, mindful of the hard-earned liberties we enjoy in this country.
I also hope each of you takes care while the summer season brings heat, and lots of it.
Please pace yourselves to avoid overexertion, and consider visiting one of the public swimming pools this season. Hours at Hillhouse High School, Wilbur Cross High School, Hill Regional High School, and John Martinez School are 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Monday – Friday and
11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturdays.
Summer is also a great time to visit one of the city’s FIVE outdoor farmer’s markets that ‘sprout’ around the city every day of
the week except Monday and Tuesday. There’s no better way to shop for fresh fruit and vegetables along with an assortment of homemade gifts!
July is rich with other outdoor activities as well. The New Haven Green will host a number of events, and all the city parks
are open to residents and their families. In addition, the Parks and Recreation department hosts “Friday Night Flicks” where
residents can stop by a designated park for a free movie for all ages. (See below for times and locations.)

Saludos Otra Vez, Vecinos y Amigos!
Feliz Cumpleaños, América! Me encanta celebrar el Día de la Independencia y la oportunidad
de celebrar lo ideal donde la Nación fue fundada. Espero que cada uno de ustedes disfruten
del Cuatro de Julio y de estar consiente como se ganó la fuerte batalla por la libertad la cual
disfruta todo la nación.
También espero que cada uno de ustedes tengan cuidado mientras que la temporada de verano se acerca y trae el calor. Cojan las cosas más suaves para evitar sobre exponerse, y considere visitar una de las piscinas públicas en esta temporada, las Escuelas Superiores Hillhouse, Hill Regional y la Escuela John Martínez comienzan a desde las 5 pm a las 7 pm de Lunes
a Viernes y los Sábados de 11 am a 3 pm.
El verano también es una buena temporada para visitar la Ciudad e ir a los cinco mercados de
los agricultores. En diversos sitios de la ciudad durante la semana excepto los Lunes y Martes. No hay una forma más saludable de comprar frutas y vegetales refrescos como también el
surtido de regalos hechos en casa!
El mes de Julio es también muy divertido para las actividades al aire libre. En el Green de New
Haven se están llevando un sinnúmero de eventos y los parques de la Ciudad están abiertos
para los residentes y sus familiares. En adición, El Departamento de Parques y Recreo estará
auspiciando en el evento un evento llamado “Friday Night Flicks” donde los residentes pueden
ir a observar una película gratis y es para todas las edades, estas películas la están mostrando
en los parques designados. (A continuación favor ver las horas y las localidades para estas
películas).

Greetings Friends:
Happy summer! As we prepare for all of the wonderful fun-filled events
that we have planned for you this season, I would like to take the time to remind you to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and to seek shelter in
air conditioned rooms as we experience an increase in temperature and humidity. Mayor Harp has opened cooling centers in the libraries and senior
centers.
I hope that you thoroughly enjoyed the various activities hosted by the
Festival of Arts & Ideas during the month of June. However, the fun does
not stop there! This month, Music on the Green, hosted by the Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven, will take place on Saturday, July 18th and
Saturday, July 25th. The funk legends, WAR, will perform on Saturday, July
18th; and R&B icons, Tony Toni Toné will perform on July 25th.
Every Friday, from July 10 to August 14, 2015, the Department of Elderly Services will join the City of New Haven’s Department of Parks, Recreation, and Trees in hosting free swimming lessons and open swimming for all
of seniors, age 55 and older, who are interested in swimming or learning
how to swim! The pool will be open every Friday at Hill Regional Career
High School from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
On Monday, August 24, 2015, the 2015 Statewide Senior Outing will be
held at Holiday Hill. More information, on how to purchase tickets to the
Statewide Senior Outing, is located on pages 5 and 6. I look forward to having a fun filled day with you at Holiday Hill. We will have a blast as we row,
dance, play Bingo, swim, and horseback ride the day away!

¡Feliz verano! Mientras nos preparamos para todos los maravillosos eventos llenos de diversión que hemos planeado para usted esta temporada, me
gustaría aprovechar el momento para recordarle que debe mantenerse hidratado tomando mucha agua y buscar refugio en los sitios con aire acondicionado,
tal como esperamos un aumento de la temperatura y la humedad. La Alcaldesa
Harp ha abierto centros de enfriamientos en las bibliotecas y centros de envejecientes.
Espero que haya disfrutado a fondo de las diversas actividades organizadas por el Festival de las Artes e Ideas en el mes de junio. Sin embargo, la diversión no se detiene ahí! Este mes, habra música en el Green, organizada por
el Hospital de Cáncer de Smilow en Yale-New Haven, tendrá lugar el Sábado,
18 de Julio y el Sábado, 25 de Julio. Los leyendas de Funk, WAR, actuarán el
Sábado, 18 de julio; y los iconos de R&B, Tony Toni Toné actuarán el Sábado,
25 de julio.
Todos los viernes, a partir del 10 julio y el 14 agosto de 2015, el Departamento de Servicios a los Ancianos se unirá con el Departamento de Parques,
Recreación y Arboles en la organización de las clases de natación gratuitas y
de la piscina abierta para todas las personas mayores que, edades 55 o más
están interesados en la natación o aprender a nadar! La piscina estará abierta
todos los viernes en la Escuela Hill Regional Career High de 10 a.m.-11:30 a.m.

Boost your memory

Good recall is a learned skill. There are ways to
improve a failing memory no matter what your
age. Suggestions include:
Make sure you're paying attention to whatever
it is you want to remember. For example, if you're
busy thinking about something else, you might
not notice where you're putting the house keys.
Use memory triggers, like association or visualization techniques. For example, link a name
you want to remember with a mental picture.
Practice using your memory. For example, try
to remember short lists, such as a grocery list.
Use memory triggers to help you 'jump' from one
item to the next. One type of memory trigger is a
walking route that you know well. Mentally attach
each item on your list to a landmark along the
route. For example, imagine putting the bread at
the mailbox, the apples at the next-door neighbor's house and the meat at the bus stop. To remember the list, you just have to 'walk' the route
in your mind.

DR. DORSEY KENDRICK, PRESIDRENT OF GATEWAY COMMUNITY COLLEGE

When Dr. Dorsey Kendrick took over the reins at Gateway Community College (GCC) it was
located on Long Wharf Drive. She arrived just in time, as GCC was falling between the cracks.
It was Dr. Dorsey Kendrick, a new fresh face with a brand new vision that was sent to save the
day. She led the way for a greater, larger and more satisfying school site with a much easier
experience for students.
"Dr. Dorsey's leadership and drive for excellence began at an early age. She was one of three
African American students to forge integration at Union University in Tennessee, where she
earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. Dr. Kendrick continued her
studies at Cardinal Stritch University, a private Roman Catholic University located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where she received a Master of Science degree in Business Management.
She then earned her Ph.D in Philosophy in Higher Education Administration from Walden University in Naples, Florida. Dr. Kendrick is also a graduate of the Institute of Educational Management at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Taking a look at the website of Gateway Community College, you'll find a personal note from
President Dorsey Kendrick, which reads, "I am pleased to welcome you to Gateway Community College. We take pride in providing equal access to a high-quality education, State-of-theArts equipment and laboratories, and a caring faculty and staff who provide the educational
support you will need to achieve your learning goals and maximize your human potential. This
website will acquaint you with the wide array of degree and certificate programs available to
you at Gateway Community College."
(Story continued on the next page) Ino making his presentation, University of New Haven's president, Steven Kaplan, had this to
say, "Dr. Kendrick's visionary leadership and courage are an inspiration to all. She has overseen a period of extraordinary growth that has been highlighted by increasing enrollments, the
introduction of innovative academic programs and the creation of industry partnerships that respond to the needs of the workforce."
Dr. Kendrick assumed her role as president of Gateway Community College in 1999. The college's enrollment grew an impressive 100% during her first eight years, becoming the largest
of Connecticut's Community Colleges. Her most outstanding achievement, however, was the
completion of Gateway's four story, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)
Gold-certified campus here in Downtown New Haven, which opened in August of 2012. This
was ultimately, accomplished through an unprecedented collaboration of city, state and private
enterprise, each playing a major part in the realization of her vision for Gateway. The campus
is gorgeous.
Over the course of her tenure at Gateway, Dr. Kendrick received numerous distinctions and
awards. "New Haven Living" named Dr. Kendrick "One of the region's 50 most influential people" for her pioneering work in education, and for spearheading Gateway Community College's
move to the new downtown campus. In 2013, the NAACP named Dr. Kendrick to their list of
the 100 most influential African Americans.
Under Kendrick's leadership, Gateway has been recognized for outstanding contributions to
education and the environment. The college, which serves more than 12,000 under graduates
each year, received in 2013 an award of merit from the Connecticut Green Building Council
and has been listed in the New York Times as the top Community College in Connecticut for
incoming freshmen.
This writer attended Gateway Community College in 2005 and 2006, with the hope of my
memory returning, following a severe stroke. After taking four semesters of courses, including
algebra, geometry and trigonometry, I found myself on the dean's list and my memory slowly
returning to normal. I must admit that it did take quite some time. The faculty and staff were
awesome and so very helpful to me during my time of great need.
The Greater New Haven community owes so much to trail blazer and visionary, Dr. Dorsey
Kendrick, who also gives a lot of attention and encouragement to the elderly and disabled seniors who find themselves back in college for the second time around.
We applaud and salute our Senior of the Month, Dr. Dorsey Kendrick, and wish her the very
best in all of her future endeavors.
