Dear Neighbors and Friends,
Best wishes for May! It’s such a pleasure to
see fresh, green grass again, blossoming
trees, and beautiful flower beds all around
town. And it’s exciting to try and keep up with
so many seasonal activities now underway.
One highlight this month is Mother’s Day – May 10th this year –
when we honor our mothers and celebrate the remarkable significance of motherhood. The woman said to have started the tradition,
in 1905, did so in memory of her mother, a peace activist who cared
for wounded soldiers from both armies of the Civil War.
In 1914 President Woodrow Wilson established the second Sunday
in May each year as Mother’s Day; now nearly 100 nations share
the custom.
May will also feature special performances at the newly opened
College Street Music Hall and at the Shubert Theater. Yale University Art Gallery also has a new exhibit of paintings, sculptures, and
other works from the period 1760 – 1860. Artists William Blake,
Théodore Géricault, and Joseph Mallord William Turner are featured.
Estimados vecinos y amigos,
New Haven residents will observe Memorial Day,
And on May
to remember and pay tribute to the men and women who gave their
lives in military service to this nation.
Best wishes for a happy and healthy month!
Toni
Cordialmente,
Toni N. Harp – Mayor

MARGO JOHNSON TAYLOR: AN EXTRAORDINARY AND PHENOMENAL SENIOR
By Arlene Davis-Rudd
Contributing writer
An extraordinary and phenomenal senior citizen, Margo Johnson Taylor is far from your average
over 65 senior. She has been most active in community-based activities for the past five decades.
Now in her mid-seventies, she still finds the ambition, strength, time, and willingness to attend
classes at Southern CT State University and work closely, on a regular basis, with the DixwellNewhallville seniors, attending their weekly meetings at the Community Outreach Center and participating in their many scheduled affairs, events, and trips. Also, Mayor Toni Harp recently appointed Margo to serve on the Dixwell "Q" House Building Advisory Committee. She has already
begun working with the Committee and looking forward to bringing the "Q" House back to how it
was "back in the day." Her commitment and dedication has been demonstrated throughout her
years of active community involvement.
Margo Johnson Taylor's Bio reads as a member of the exclusive, "Who's Who in America." A
popular Registered Nurse, Margo was born and raised in New Haven, CT. She attended its public
schools, graduating from James Hillhouse High School. Following, she graduated from the Massachusetts General Hospital School of Nursing in Boston, Mass, and also, received a BS Degree
from Southern Connecticut State University. Her entire professional nursing career was spent at
Yale-New Haven Hospital where she served as staff nurse, Assistant Nurse Manager, and Nurse
Manager, at the time of her semi-retirement in 1999.
A patient area of the Women's Center waiting room at Yale-New Haven Hospital has been dedicated to Margo by Yale-New Haven Hospital and Yale University School of Medicine, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, in honor of her more than three decades of outstanding service to the women of Greater New Haven. In 1991, she was honored for her 23 years as Nurse
Manager of the Women's Center. At that time, the now deceased former mayor, John C. Daniels,
presented her with a Proclamation from the City of New Haven.
Being the bright and humble soul that she has always been, Margo has had the opportunity to
serve on several boards of directors. They include Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC);
Planned Parenthood League of New Haven; South Central Community College Advisory Board
(now called Gateway Community College); Center for Advocacy, Research, and Planning
(CARP); the City's Child Care Commission on Infant Health; Life Haven, Inc.; and appointed by
deceased, former Mayor, Ben DiLieto to serve on his Task Force on AIDS; she also served with
distinction on the Greater New Haven NAACP's Health Advisory Committee.
In 1986, Margo Johnson Taylor, participated in the New Haven County Women's Roundo
table
Series: A Profile of the Marketplace and the Community in relation to Black Business and Professional Women.
She is a member of and Past President of the New Haven Chapter of The Links, Inc., and
the NH Chapter of Girl Friends, Inc. She is, also, a member of the Greater NH AfricanAmerican Historical Society and Past Vice-President of the Greater New Haven NAACP.
For years, she has been a member of the Greater New Haven NAACP.
Margo's professional memberships include: The Massachusetts General Hospital's Nurses
Alumni Association, Inc.; Sigma Theta Tau, Delta Mu Chapter; International Nursing
Honor Society; and Southern CT Black Nurses Association, Inc. (former member).
In 1993, our amazing and outstanding community servant, Margo Johnson Taylor, received the Minority Nurse of the Year Recognition Award. The following year she received the Mary E. Mahoney Award for "Outstanding Service and Dedication to Nursing," from the Southern CT Black Nurses Association and she received the Charles E.
Fletcher Civic Service Award from the Dixwell "Q" Community House Alumni Association for out-standing services to our community.
After retiring from Yale-NH Hospital, Margo was recruited to fill a vacancy at Hillhouse
High School for Parenting Teachers. She believes strongly that learning is a lifelong experience. She enjoyed teaching; however, she preferred to experience full retirement.
Margo has been a lifelong member of the Dixwell Avenue Congregational Church, UCC,
where she has served as Sunday School Teacher, Finance Board member, Usher and
Church Historian. Last year, the trailblazer, Margo Johnson-Taylor, stepped down from
her position as Church Historian. She remains a member of the History Committee.
Our awesome servant is not without Awards, Citations and Honors. In 2001, Margo was
an Honoree at the Church's 181st Anniversary. In 2003, she was recognized by the Dixwell Men's Network for "Dedicated Service and Support to the men of Dixwell." In 2010,
she received one of the Legendary Women's Awards from The Perfect Blend, and in
2012, Margo was honored by the NH Chapter of Links, Inc. Margo, also, was the recipient of The Community Service Award from the West Haven Coalition.
In March, the extraordinary and phenomenal woman, Margo Johnson Taylor and her husband, Reuben, celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary. They are the proud parents of
Lisa Taylor and the late Scott Taylor; grandparents of Dr. Tiana Taylor (Mustafa Shabazz)
and Scott Taylor II; and great-grand-parents to Nazir Mustafa Shabazz.

Health Tips
MAY (MAYO) 2015
source: AARP.org
Laugh: No joke: Humor is healthy. A hearty laugh provides short but similar benefits of aerobic exercise for improved
heart (and brain) health and immunity. Other benefits: Laughter elevates the production of neurotransmitters linked to improved memory and alertness while decreasing stress hormones that can cloud thinking. And when listening to jokes, as
you wrestle to understand the punch line, areas of the brain that are vital to learning, creativity and decision-making activate, much as they do when working out "brainteaser" crossword puzzles and Sudoku.
Take a nap: In addition to improved daytime alertness, good sleep — night after night — helps keep memory and learning well-tuned. But even with Rip Van Winkle-like nocturnal habits (and certainly without), consider a regular afternoon
nap for about 90 minutes. It costs nothing but time — and the pay back, according to studies, could be significant. Compared to non-nappers, those who partake in daytime zzz's display measurable improvements in tests gauging decisionmaking, problem-solving, creativity and even tasks like recalling directions.
Meditate: Studies find that daily meditation can strengthen connections between brain cells, increase growth in the part of
the brain that controls memory and language, and may even bolster the ability to process information and make decisions
more quickly. There are various forms of meditation, but most involve spending 15–60 minutes — best if done at least
once a day — of focused attention on a word, object, sound or even your own breathing. Classes help, but for cost (and
other) consciousness, consider free "how-to" videos and help available online.
