The first stained window was really red, the next window was really blue, another window was really green, and the last window was really yellow. The sun had come up in the south and a wonderful light was coming through the four windows. The pastor explained, “This first window with all the reds is dedicated to St. Matthew and has his picture on it. The second window with all the blues is dedicated to St. Mark and has his picture on it. The third window with all the greens is dedicated to St. Luke and has his picture on it. The fourth window with all the yellows is dedicated to St. John and has his picture on it. All the windows are so beautiful, especially with the sunlight shining through them.” One of the little girls asked, “Do you know what a saint is?” “A saint is somebody who the light shines through,” replied the pastor. Yes, the light of God shines through the lives of the saints. It is not your light that is shining; it is the light of God shining through your lives. All baptized Christians who have died and are now with God in glory are considered saints. All Saints’ Day, celebrated this Tuesday, November 1, is a day on which we thank God for giving ordinary men and women a share in His holiness and heavenly glory as a reward for their faith. In fact, we celebrate the feast of each canonized saint on a particular day of the year. But there are countless other saints and martyrs, men, women and children united with God in heavenly glory, whose feasts we do not celebrate. Among these would be our own parents and grandparents, brothers and sisters, who were heroic women and men of Faith. All Saints' Day is intended to honor their memory. So Tuesday's feast can be called the feast of the Unknown Saint, in line with the tradition of the “Unknown Soldier.” Today, the Church reminds us that God's call for holiness is universal, that all of us are called to live in His love and to make His love real in the lives of those around us. All Saints’ Day is a day not only to remember the saints and to thank God for them, but also to pray for their help. It is also a day to glorify Jesus Christ, who by his life and death has made the saints holy. This feast offers a challenge— each one of us can become a saint, regardless of our age, lifestyle or living conditions. St. Augustine accepted this challenge when he asked the question, "If others can become saints, why can't I?" Why can’t you? Why can’t we? In closing, on Wednesday, November 2, we celebrate All Souls’ Day. This day reminds me of a funny story about a mistake a florist once made. A shop owner received a bouquet of flowers when he opened a new shop. When he read the enclosed card, he was dismayed because it said, “Deepest Condolences.” While he was wondering about the message, his phone rang. It was from the florist, apologizing for having sent the wrong card. “Oh, it’s alright,” said the man. “I am a businessman, and I understand how these things can happen.” The florist said, “But I accidentally sent your card to the funeral wake.” The man asked, “What did it say?” The florist replied, “Congratulations on your new location.” Certainly it was an awkward and unintentional mistake. However, it reflects in a certain way our hope for departed loved ones. We hope and pray that our departed loved ones are in heaven enjoying eternal rest. As we often hear at funeral wakes, he/she is in a better place, a better location, so to speak. After all, that’s the purpose of coming for Mass on All Souls’ Day. We pray that God will grant our departed loved ones eternal rest in His presence. May the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace, Amen. God Bless Us All, Fr. She shared with us that she left because she wasn’t able to make the rosaries. It was always on her mind to try again, she said. This time she sat at the checking table and immediately felt comfortable. She was able to join in the laughing and talking that happens when our volunteers spend these three hours a week together. Good friends are made here. We pause our work each week to pray one decade of the rosary for each person’s needs and for world peace. I think our newly returned volunteer will be back. We hope you will join us. On November 2, All Souls Day, the 12:10 pm Mass will be offered for deceased rosary makers and their families with a luncheon following in Seelos Hall. Rosary makers meet each Wednesday at St. John Neumann from 9 am-12pm. Contact [email protected], 410-990-4100 extension 4714, www.rangerrosary.org. Socks, underwear, hair ties, toiletries, writing journals, pens, pencils, nightlights, and small plush animals were contributed to fill the backpacks. In late September, the students in our Environmental Studies Program traveled to the Karen Noonan Environmental Education Center, a twenty-acre marsh habitat in southern Dorchester County. The faculty members, Mr. Paul O’Hearn and Ms. Pam Demske, and the students participated in an intensive three-day field study of the Chesapeake Bay. While it rained most of the three days, that did not prevent the group from learning and having fun. Please join us for St. Mary’s Elementary School’s Open House this Friday, November 4. See page 9 for more details. We welcomed guest speaker, Mr. Chris Inglis, the former Assistant Director of the National Security Agency (NSA) who is now at the US Naval Academy. He came to speak to selected students about Cyber Security. We are very blessed to have so many opportunities to give our students a well-rounded perspective on so many aspects of real life, so they can be better informed to make good choices in all they do. On October 20, we were graced by the presence of Archbishop Warda, C.Ss.R., who spoke to several classes in order to enlighten them on the plight of Christian refugees in Iraq who were driven from their homes in the region of Mosul in 2014 because of their religion and beliefs. He provided a slide presentation of photos that gave the students a real perspective of the situation as it unfolded at the time, as well as the progress they have made over the last two years to help those who found themselves with nothing but the clothes on their back. He wanted the students to know that they could help through their use of social media by spreading the word of the continued need to help all persecuted Christians. We are grateful to Archbishop Warda for bringing his experiences to our students so they can gain a better perspective of worldly events where they can very easily make a difference, if they choose. Archbishop Warda’s Visit We were blessed to have Archbishop Warda, C.Ss.R. visit and speak to parishioners and to our older students about the plight of Christian refugees in Iraq. “I would like to thank everyone who helped to make Archbishop Bashar Warda’s visit here at St. Mary's a wonderful experience for him and for our parish. His message is a timely one. May God bless you all for your charity and your participation.” Fr. Eric Hoog, C.Ss.R. Don’t Forget: SMHS Open House is next Sunday, November 6.
