PASTOR'S NOTES Catechetical Sunday This weekend in the United States, the Church celebrates Catechetical Sunday. Catechetical Sunday is a day in which all the Church is invited to pray for catechists who will be working with the children of our parish, preparing them to receive the sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist, as well as helping them grow in the faith. At each of our weekend masses here at St. Francis, we will invite those in our community who have responded to the call of being catechists to stand and receive a special blessing as they begin their new school year. As I read some of the articles and stories on this special weekend, I began to reflect on the important role that parents place in the formation of their children in the faith. The Church has always taught that parents are in fact the first catechists, (CCC 2221-2222) and as such, they are supported by parish catechists in carrying out this important responsibility. As parents direct their children’s faith formation through example and instruction, catechists support them in the classroom setting by providing information on what the Church believes and teaches. At St. Francis, we recognize the important role of parents and continue to look for ways in which we as a parish can support parents in carrying out their mission. Among the things we currently provide is the Family Faith Formation program. The purpose of this monthly program is to help parents grow in their own knowledge of God and His presence in their lives. While this might seem to many as “just another requirement or hoop,” our hope is that Family Faith Formation will not only give parents the necessary tools to help their children, but also help parents in their own relationships with God. In addition to Family Faith Formation, we also have parish Evangelization Retreats. These retreats are focused on helping individuals develop a deeper knowledge of the Church’s invitation to carry out the mission entrusted to it by Jesus: spreading the message “God is love.” Both of these programs at St. Francis are a great opportunity not only for parents -- who are the first catechists -- to grow in faith, but for us all to grow! Hence, I invite everyone to be part of our Family Faith Formation, and if you have not yet experienced a parish Evangelization retreat, please do so. I assure you, God has great things planned for you. Finally, I invite you to join me in praying for and thanking our catechists who work so hard to help transmit our faith to the youngest members of our parish family! Rev. Efrain Bautista Administrator STEWARDSHIP THOUGHTS Twenty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time The prophet Isaiah teaches us that the Lord God is our help in the face of opposition. In St. Mark’s Gospel, Jesus proclaims that we must take up our cross and follow Him. St. James gives us a practical lesson on sacrifice when he states, faith of itself, if it does not have works, is dead. What a powerful stewardship message! As Christ’s disciples, we are called through our Baptism to serve the Church by giving our time, talent, and treasure back to God through our parish communion. Our responsibility, as faithful stewards, is to use God’s abundant gifts wisely. How are we responding to His call to service? Cultivating Our Faith 24th Sunday in Ordinary Time First Reading — The Lord GOD is my help; who will prove me wrong? (Isaiah 50:5-9a). Psalm — I will walk before the Lord, in the land of the living (Psalm 116). Second Reading — Faith, if it does not have works, is dead (James 2:14-18). Gospel — Jesus asked his disciples, “Who do you say that I am?” (Mark 8:27-35).
