This mountain area is situated in the south-west of the Castilian meseta next to
Portugal.
Historically it has been one of the important vine growing regions of Castile. Due to the
difficulties of working on the steep hillsides and scarce production of the autochthonous
variety “RUFETE “ the vineyards were abandoned. In spite of this and thanks to the
privileged climate and ideal soil the vine growing is now recovering.
Bodegas Valdeaguila, SL.
The winecellar VALDEAGUILA was founded in 2000. All tanks are of stainless steel
and the cellar has spacious room for barrels and wine racks.
The prestigious professor of enology, Joan Milà, is in charge of the winemaking.
Valdeaguila has a surface of 60 ha of vineyards, which are distributed in small plots on
the steep and slaty hillsides of the township of Garcibuey.
Rufete.
Is the autochthonous grape variety of the area and has been cultivated for centuries. In
fact, most of the vines of this variety are than 70 years old. It perfectly adapts to the
acid soil and the climate of these mountains, which is humid in winter and dry in the
summer. The production of this variety is very scarce, but its excellent aromas and
fruity notes, however, make the difficult cultivation worth it.
Besides the variety of Refute in this region you can also find the red varieties
Garnacha and Tempranillo and white ones Verdejo and Pedro Ximenez.
