SPECIAL RECALL ELECTION
Dear Voter:
This sample ballot booklet has been prepared for you in order to provide important information about
this election’s contests and candidates. Information and Instructions for voting in a Recall Election
appear on the pages that follow.
Voting by Mail: If you are one of the many voters already classified with Permanent Vote by Mail
status, no further application is necessary. Your ballot will be mailed to you automatically beginning
on August 3, 2015. If you do not have Permanent status, but wish to vote by mail, you can use the
application found on the back cover of this booklet or simply call our office and request a ballot by
telephone.
Voting at the Polls? Be sure to check the back cover of this booklet for your polling place location,
as it may have been changed. On Election Day, all polling places in Madera County will open at 7:00
a.m. and will close at 8:00 p.m.
For voters with specific needs, Madera County has a Supplemental Voting System available. It
provides voters with disabilities or limited proficiency in English, the opportunity to cast their ballot
privately and without assistance. Voters have the option of listening to instructions and ballot options
with headphones or may navigate through the ballot using tactile switches. Equipment is available
for use at the County Clerk’s office and at each polling location in the county on Election Day.

Esta muestra de boleta electoral ha sido preparada para usted con el fin de proveerle información

INFORMATION ABOUT VOTING YOUR BALLOT
It is important to know how to properly mark your ballot cards and what the consequences can be when ballot cards are not
m arked correctly.
If voting at the polls, mark your choices on your ballot card (s) with the Mark-A-Vote pen pro vided by the precinct officers. T his
pen has special, non-reflective ink that allows the card reading equipment to “see” the marks you mak e, and tabulate your
votes.
If voting by m ail, mark your choices on your ballot card(s) with either a #2 lead pencil or a ball point pen (blu e or bla ck ink) on ly.
Do not use re d ink pens, Sh arpies or m arkers of an y other kind.
Marking more voting spaces than allowed for a contest is called an OVERVOTE. For example, if the contest heading states
“Vote for n o m ore than T wo” and you m ark three voting spaces , your votes fo r that contest will not be counted.
Marking fewer voting spaces than allowed for a contes t is called an UNDERVOTE. For example, if the contest heading states
“Vote for no m ore than Two” an d you m ark o nly one voting space, your vote for the one candidate for whom you marked the
voting space, will be counted. In addition, the ballot counting system will record one undervote, as you ha d the opportun ity to
vote for two candidates and chose to vote for only one candidate.
If you ch oos e to vo te for a write-in candidate, you must write the candidates name in the space provided below the list of names
of the other candidates for that office, and you must m ark the voting space next to the candidates name you have written in.
If you write in a candidates name without marking the voting space, the card reading equipment will not “see” the vote and your
write-in vote will not be counted. In addition, only votes for qualified write-in candidates will be counted. To be a qualified writein candidate, the candidate must have filed the required nomination documents within the timeframe specified by law.

Si usted escoge votar por un candidato que “se escriba en” (que no esta previamente escrito en la boleta electoral), usted debe escribir
el nombre del candidato en el espacio provisto debajo de los nombres de los otros candidatos para dicho puesto publico y usted debe
marcar el espacio de voto junto al nombre del candidato que usted escribió. Si usted escribe el nombre de un candidato y no marca el

ser un candidato calificado que “se escriba en”: este deberá haber archivado los documentos de nominación requeridos dentro del periodo

INSTRUCTIONS TO VOTERS
HOW TO VOTE YOUR BALLOT CARDS
VOTING BY MAIL: Follow the instructions provided with your vote-by-mail
ballot (yellow sheet).
STEP 1
VOTING AT THE POLLS: Use only the marking device provided to fill in
the small rectangle in the square. Do not fill in the whole square or your vote
may not be counted.
Remove ballot cards from secrecy
holder, if applicable.
ALL VOTERS: To vote for a candidate whose name appears on the ballot,
FILL IN THE RECTANGLE in the square to the right of the candidate’s name.
Where two or more candidates for the same office are to be elected, FILL IN
THE RECTANGLE in the square to the right of the names of all candidates for
the office for whom you desire to vote, not to exceed, however, the number
of candidates to be elected.
STEP 2
VOTE ONE CARD AT A TIME. Read both
sides of each card to ensure that you
have cast your vote for all contests in
which you want to vote.
To vote for a qualified WRITE-IN candidate, where applicable, write the person’s
name in the blank space provided for that purpose after the names of the
other candidates for the same office and FILL IN THE RECTANGLE in the
square to the right of the name you have written in, or your vote will not be
counted.
DO NOT FILL IN THE WHOLE SQUARE,
JUST THE SMALL RECTANGLE, OR
YOUR VOTE MAY NOT BE COUNTED.
Use only the marking pen provided to
mark your ballot.
To vote on any measure, FILL IN THE RECTANGLE in the square after the
word “YES” or after the word “NO.”
If you wrongly mark, tear or deface any portion of your ballot cards, replace
the cards in the secrecy holder and return it to the Precinct Board Member
and obtain another set.
STEP 3
After you have completed voting, place
your ballot cards, with the stubs at the
top, in the secrecy holder and hand
it, along with the marking pen, to the
Precinct Board Member.
MAKE SURE YOU VOTE BOTH SIDES OF YOUR BALLOT CARDS TO ENSURE THAT
YOU HAVE CAST YOUR VOTE FOR ALL CONTESTS IN WHICH YOU WANT TO VOTE.
AFTER YOU HAVE COMPLETED VOTING, place your ballot cards in the secrecy
holder with the NUMBERED STUBS AT THE TOP and hand it, along with the
marking pen, to the Precinct Board Member who shall, in your presence,
remove numbered stubs, hand them to you and deposit the voted ballot in
the ballot box.

In a Recall Election, your ballot will have two sections to vote on.
In the first section, you will be asked:

“Shall the Incumbent named (current Officeholder) be recalled (removed) from office?”
#
You may vote “Yes”, “No”, or skip the question.
You do not have to vote on the Recall question in order to vote for candidates.
In the next section of the ballot you will see:

Names of candidate’s running to replace the current Officeholder if the recall is successful.

Names are listed in random order as determined by the Secretary of State.
Vote for the candidate of your choice by filling in the box to the right of the candidate’s name.
If more voters (majority) voting on the Recall question vote “Yes”:

NOTICE OF INTENTION TO CIRCULATE RECALL PETITION
ANSWER OF INCUMBENT
TO THE HONORABLE KATHLEEN CRUMPTON: Pursuant to Section 11020,
California Elections Code, the undersigned registered qualified voters of Trustee
Area 2 of the Golden Valley Unified School District in Madera County, in the State
of California, hereby give notice that we are the proponents of a recall election and
that we intend to seek your recall and removal from the office of Governing Board
Member, Golden Valley Unified School District, Area 2 in Madera, California, and
to demand election of a successor in that office.
Please do not sign the divisive and un-democratic recall petition and vote no on the
recall.
The grounds for the recall are as follows:
Our community seeks to recall Kathleen Crumpton for the purpose of ensuring our
children receive the quality education they deserve.
Crumpton's actions demonstrate a reckless disregard for the children, parents,
teachers and taxpayers of the district. Her abuse of power, scheming, irresponsible waste of money, contrary changes to board policy and undermining of teachers
and staff requires her swift removal.
Since the district was formed in 1998, we have achieved remarkable success.
Golden Valley is the highest performing district in Madera County. All of our progress is in jeopardy by the recent decision of Crumpton to force out our Superintendent, Andy Alvarado. This decision directly impacts district finances causing
reserves to fall below the state mandated 3%.
I am honored to serve on the School Board. As a dedicated mother and board
member I want the best for our children. Unfortunately an upset local minority, who
lost the last election, are trying now to achieve through a recall petition what they
were unable to achieve democratically through the general election. They have
made vague accusations unsupported by facts. The actual facts are indisputable:
First, the superintendent voluntarily separated from the district; the Board did not
fire him. Second, the District budget must have at least a 3% reserve; our latest
March 3rd budget reserve is 8.87%. Third, I led the fight to save millions for taxpayers by way of the solar project successfully getting the high interest rate reduced.
Fourth, I led the fight to reduce top heavy administration, which saved employee
jobs. Fifth, I am the only Board member consistently visiting school sites, listening
to the voters and promulgating your concerns at the Board. Sixth, no one ran
against me in the last election, strongly indicating community approval of my service.

Teacher layoffs are likely, increasing class sizes. Extracurricular programs may be
cut, again! Partnerships and grants to provide for state of the art career and technical education facilities are also in danger. Crumpton has created a poisonous atmosphere that has led to added loss of Mr. and Mrs. Panion. Others will follow suit
if we fail to act now.
Restore integrity to Golden Valley by recalling Kathleen Crumpton and replacing
her with a trustee who puts our children's education first and foremost.

Estoy honrada de servir en la Junta Escolar. Como madre dedicada y miembro de
la Junta, yo quiero lo mejor para nuestros niños. Desafortunadamente una minoría
molesta, que perdió la elección, está tratando ahora de logarlo a través de una
petición de destitución, lo que ellos no lograron hacer democráticamente mediante
la elección general. Ellos han hecho acusaciones vagas, sin hechos que lo
apoyen. Los hechos indisputables son:
Primero, El superintendente se separó voluntariamente del distrito; La Junta no lo
despidió. Segundo, el Presupuesto del distrito debe tener al menos un 3% de
reserva; nuestro presupuesto de reserva del mes de Marzo es de 8.87%. Tercero,
yo he sido la primera en pelear para ahorrar millones de dólares de los
contribuyentes al reducir la alta tasa de interés del proyecto solar. Cuarto,
encabece la lucha para reducir altos gastos de administración, con lo que se

I am Maria Knobloch. I am running for Golden Valley Unified School District for our
children and our community.

Patrick, my husband of 29 years, and I made this our home 18 years ago. Our children, Kristin and Gavin, attended Golden Valley schools and graduated from Liberty High. I have been president of Madera Unified Sports League since 1999.
MUSL has contributed over $80,000 to Liberty High for athletic programs and will
soon be contributing to music and other programs. I also volunteer at youth group
programs.
A business woman in charge of tens of millions of dollars of sales and responsible
for profitability in my department, I negotiate with vendors and oversee and establish staffing parameters, wages, HR policies, retention, and recruiting programs. I
understand budgets.
I will bring my experience as a parent, community volunteer and business woman
to put our Golden Valley Unified School District back on track. We are the top performing school district in Madera County and have created a district we can all be
proud of with a culture of collaboration, communication and cooperation. With your
help and support, we can make the Golden Valley experience even better than
what it was before.
