ST. MONICA CATHOLIC CHURCH ARCHDIOCESE OF GALVESTON - HOUSTON PAGE 5 From the Pastoral Pattern: In explaining the Jubilee of Mercy, Pope Francis declares that showing compassion and understanding for those in difficult situations is not only an individual disciple’s duty, but the responsibility of the universal Church. Today, Acts shows the early church doing precisely that. Prayerfully open to Spirit’s guidance: Rather than “guessing” at approved resolutions, “It is the decision of the Holy Spirit and of us…” (Acts 15: 28). Compassionately responsive: “ … not to place on you any burden beyond these necessities” (15:28). Creatively daring: A Jewish majority renounces time-honored rituals that establish spiritual identity and express covenant fidelity. Radically trustful: The non-essential is distinguished from the non-negotiable, universally valid principles affirmed but uniquely local and personal situations respected—exactly the grace Pope Francis prays the Jubilee Year will renew in today’s Church. Revelation’s vision confirms Acts’ insight. The new Jerusalem’s gates face everywhere, welcoming everyone. Both readings thus echo Pope Francis’s teaching: the Church’s Spirit-given mission is to reconcile diversity in Jesus’ community, still in process and on pilgrimage, rather than filter out the unworthy from a community already perfected. On the very night of betrayal, denial, and desertion, Jesus boldly promises that the Spirit will remind us of all Jesus taught—and continue teaching us. Jesus then bequeaths his shalom. Unlike the world’s superficial, fragile cobbling together of broken promises and competing self-interest, Jesus’ shalom is soul-deep, rock solid, enduring life’s inward pain and outward storms. Jesus’ shalom within us always bears fruit in our lives modeled on Jesus’ own self-sacrifice, thus giving glory to the Father and giving life to others. That the next time worry, anxiety or fear enters our life, our first thought is to thank God for all He has given us. “…do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid.” John 14:27 Our limited human understanding cannot begin to understand the immense power of God. Instead of trusting in God, we think we can control every outcome. Do you want to make God laugh? Tell Him your plans. The next time worry, anxiety or fear creeps in, thank God for all He has given you and trust He has a better plan for you. ¿Quieres hacer reír a Dios? MONICA CATHOLIC CHURCH ARCHDIOCESE OF GALVESTON - HOUSTON PAGE 7 Sunday Spiritual Thoughts: Moving closer to Jesus’ Ascension to heaven, He shown to his disciples that his boundless love would be as true and constant in intensity both and the same as when he is present and as when he away as well; He is leaving soon but he is not abandoning us; he and the Father will be around us when our hearts and minds are open to the lead of the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send in Jesus’ name. Do we pray with open heart and mind to God to make our spiritual life working and fruitful? The reason we need to be opened to the lead of the Holy Spirit, because the Holy Spirit will instruct, remind and guide us continuously on our continued discipleship to Jesus and his redemptive works; Jesus is known of his works to the poor, sick and sinners; he proclaims the word of God for peace through forgiveness, love through service and justice through mercy. Jesus has revealed to us the invisible Father through his works of mercy. Have we allowed the inspiration of the Holy Spirit in our life as person and member of Christ disciples to work on the works of Jesus? The First reading reminds of what had happened in the early Christian community regarding their Christian tenets to follow on the most serious problem, namely, “whether new gentile converts would have to go through the Old Testament to have a New Testament. The official answer was this one, “Christianity is separate from Judaism.” Simple and serious problems always come in our ways. Mistakes and disagreements from time to time come along with our day to day business, but as community of disciples inspired by Holy Spirit we can always come up with consensus and reconciliation so to speak only with one voice based on faith, trust and fraternal correction. Have you ever tried to gauge your faith, trust to measure up your openness to fraternal correction? Saint John’ reflection on the second reading reminds us of a wonderful work of the Holy Spirit in the Church. The Holy Spirit brings communion in the Church and families, for the Holy Spirit stands in between us to fulfill the Words and works of Jesus in the Church and families, Amen. Fr.
