In 1521 the Aztec Empire fell to the Spanish forces. Less than 20 years later, 9 million people who had professed a polytheistic and human sacrificing religion were converted to Christianity. What happened in those times to produce such an incredible and historically unprecedented conversion? In 1531 a “Lady from Heaven” appeared to a humble Native American at Tepeyac, a hill that lies northwest of present day Mexico City. She identified herself as the “ever virgin Holy Mary, Mother of the True God for whom we all live, creator of all things, Lord of heaven and earth.” She made a request for a church to be built on the site. When the Bishop hesitated and requested a sign, the Mother of God obeyed without a question to the Church’s local bishop. She sent her native messenger to the top of the hill in mid-December to gather an assortment of roses for him. She also left us an image of herself imprinted miraculously on the native’s tilma, a poor quality cactus cloth which should have deteriorated within 20 years. Now, 482 years later, it shows no sign of deterioration and the image defies all scientific explanations of its origin. It apparently reflects in its eyes what was before her in 1531. There is reason to believe that the Tepeyac Mary came in her glorified body and arranged the roses in Juan Diego’s tilma with her physical hands. It is a fact that makes her apparition unique. A seemingly unending list of miracles, cures and interventions are attributed to her. Yearly 18-20 million pilgrims visit the basilica making it Christianity’s most visited sanctuary. Altogether, twenty-five Popes have honored Tepeyac Mary as “Our Lady of Guadalupe,” and Pope John Paul 11 visited her sanctuary four times. During his 1999 visit, he declared her to be “Patroness of All the Americas,” (both North and South America) and December 12th to be a liturgical Holy Day for the South American continent. During that same visit, Pope John Paul 11 named her to be the special protector of the innocent lives of children, most especially those children in danger of not being born. Please join our Mass of Celebration and the fiesta to honor OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE, PATRONESS OF THE AMERICAS Thursday, December 12 Mass begins at 6:00pm, especial Fiesta in the Gym immediately following All children are invited to join in the Offertory procession. Everyone participating is asked to bring a single rose (any color) which will be placed in a vase at the statue of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Please provide desserts for the fiesta by bringing them to the gym before Mass. After the meal we will have a raffle of some beautiful items picturing Our Lady of Guadalupe. Questions? Call the church office 946-1893. A Custom Surrounding the Feast of Virgen de las Americas From December 3rd through the 11th we have a novena in different homes. Every night at 6:00 we gather for prayer and a time of faith sharing. On the 11th after the novena, we come back to the church or parish office for prayer. At midnight we gather around the outside Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe asking for her intercession with prayer and song. We come back inside and pray until 6:30am when we sing “Mañanitas,” which is a happy birthday wish and petition for her protection in the coming year. Then in the evening we celebrate the Holy Mass as a Guadalupana family in our Borromeo Church at 6:00pm. ALL ARE INVITED to celebrate this most special feast with us at Mass and the fiesta to follow in the gym. Welcome to St. Charles Borromeo Parish! FROM THE PASTOR’S PEN SECOND WEEK OF ADVENT WREATH PRAYER AN ADVENT REFLECTION Our hope is in the coming of the Lord (light two purple candles) Let us pray: that we may experience fully the peace of Christ. (pause for silent prayer) Father in Heaven, the day draws near when the birth of Your Son will make radiant the night of the waiting world. May His quiet coming fill us with true inner peace. Amen. The readings for the Second Sunday of Advent focus on John the Baptist. He stands in the desert, roughly clothed, ascetic, stark, a prophet preaching a message of power. The One is coming, he says, Repent! John the Baptist is not the only saint we celebrate during Advent. The Calendar is full of holy men and women who, like John, call us to conversion and hope through the most powerful witness of all: our lives. Lord Jesus, I hear the call of John the Baptist. I come to You in sorrow for my sins, open to Your grace. Help me be a prophet of God’s Word and Will to our world today. ADVENT PEACE PONDERINGS: PEACE IN MY SCHOOL OR WORKPLACE GOOD NEWS OF JESUS WORKING IN OUR BORROMEO FAMILY In today’s Isaiah passage, read aloud the absurd combinations of animals and their strange behavior. Starting with “the wolf shall be a guest of the lamb,” read thru to “the baby shall play by the viper’s den.” These outrageous examples in nature of making peace and getting along with others are supposed to get our attention. As Catholics we believe Christ’s birth means peace has arrived, but we need to spread it. How can we be peacemakers at school? At work? Advent-ure in Peace Can you imagine possibilities you would not have thought possible before reading this? For example, could you invite the loner to join your lunch table this week at school? Think of an “impossible” situation. Can you imagine a peaceful solution? Can you be the one to bring the peace? Peacemaker’s Prayer Loving God, We know all things are possible with you. Show us the possibilities where we might bring peace each day. Amen. Anna Johnson, a Freshman at Incarnate Word Academy, was nominated and selected as a Mission Model for the month of October 2013. She was chosen because she is learning and practicing Incarnate Word Academy’s Core Belief of following the example of Jesus, shown in how she relates to others. She is kind, polite, and helpful. She cheerfully volunteers for tasks at school and also at the soup kitchen with her parish family. We are proud of Anna for demonstrating this mission in her daily life. We hope you have the opportunity to congratulate her on this significant accomplishment. “THANK YOU” FROM OUR BOLIVIAN BROTHERS & SISTERS Thank you for your generous support for the Latin America Apostolate and Maria Reina! Our total donation of $6724.45 is a great help for this missionary work. Your generous support will assist our St. Louis Priest Missionaries to continue their missionary work and pastoral care for the people of Bolivia. You might enjoy a reflection on his missionary work that our newest Missionary in the Latin America Apostolate, Fr. Timothy Noelker, wrote recently: From “Take Out: Family Faith on the Go” For more Advent family resources, check out www.osvparish.com “My first year in the Latin America Apostolate has provided me with countless opportunities to share the Gospel and the joy of knowing Christ. Activities such as helping to establish a youth ministry program in Parroquia Maria Reina, teaching Please pray for our loved ones who are hospitalized or ill, including: Homebound, Critically Ill or in the Hospital? Annie Blume, Danny Garcia all who are dealing with long term illnesses and for the intentions on our Borromeo Prayer Tree If you are homebound and wish to receive the Eucharist, or receive a visit while in the hospital, please call Mary Kutchback at 946-9758 or the parish office at 946-1893. Second Sunday of Advent, December 8, 2013 in the archdiocesan seminary,, and helping prepare couples for the Sacrament of Holy Matrmony allow me to see Christ in the people whom I serve. This blessing, along with the fact that Christ continually transforms the service done for Him into blessings for the one serving, provide me with a deepening understanding of the mystery of living in communion with the Lord. For two years serving as a priest in St. Louis, I thought that I could not be happier, but living in Bolivia provides unique opportunities for service which have brought me an even deeper joy. When visiting isolated communities in the altiplano, the gratitude at seeing a priest is palpable. Spending time with children who participate in a tutoring and meal program at Maria Reina is one of my favorite responsibilities. Their appreciation for a kind word, encouragement, or just being present, is overwhelming and humbling. So too is gratitude expressed by the homebound who too frequently live in isolation—even if they live in the same house as their family. Not that the Bolivian culture does not cherish family life; it does, but far too often the reality remains far from the ideal. Listening to the joys and pains, hopes and fears of many, especially the youth and the elderly, assures me of the value of the compassion that Christ so often showed to others—and continues to show today. Although the privilege of physically serving in the foreign missions may not be available to all, the means to support the missions are. Thank you for your prayers, sacrifices and generosity which allow the Gospel to be shared with our brothers and sisters in Christ!” Your support for the Latin America Apostolate is helping Fr. Noelker, along with Fr. Pat Hayden, Fr. Jim Michler, and Bishop Casey to share the message of the Gospel in Bolivia. Joke of the Week After the christening of his baby brother in church, Jason sobbed all the way home in the back seat of the car. His father asked him three times what was wrong. Finally, the boy replied, “That preacher said he wanted us brought up in a Christian home, and I wanted to stay with you guys.” A mother invited some people to dinner. At the table, she turned to their six-year-old daughter and said, “Would you like to say the blessing?” “I wouldn’t know what to say,” the girl replied. “Just say what you hear Mommy say,” the mother answered. The daughter bowed her head and said, “Lord, why on earth did I invite all these people to dinner?” Share the Gospel, the Good News of Jesus and His Borromeo Family! Sunday, December 15 beginning at 1:00pm, we should be done by 5:00 GOSPEL REFLECTION In today’s gospel we find a bold and courageous character named John the Baptist. He is determined to prepare the way for the coming of Messiah, Jesus Christ. Out of the wilderness John the Baptist appears wearing clothing of camel’s hair. His food is locusts and wild honey. His heart is pure and his preaching changes the hearts of many people. John announces the coming of a new age when people are called to change their hearts and repent from sin. It is time to prepare for the coming of our savior, Jesus Christ. Today’s passage focuses on John’s preaching which calls for a change of heart and true conversion in order to welcome Jesus and turn back to God. John’s mission and message center on Jesus, the coming Messiah, and the moral conversion necessary to prepare for his kingdom of justice and peace. What is your vision of God’s kingdom? Why are justice and freedom for the poor signs of God’s kingdom? Second Sunday of Advent, December 8, 2013 SERVERS, 8:00 A.M. Or do you spend your time, talent and treasure constantly acquiring more toys, clutter and junk. As we are immersed in the holiday shopping season now might be a good time to evaluate what gifts do we give to God? We pray that, as we prepare for Christmas, we may also find time to reach out to those who are lonely, needy or sorrowful. Gifts are due this weekend! Thanks to everyone who participated, and may God bless you abundantly! Please contact our Prayer Tree for your intentions: 928-2970 or [email protected] Welcome to St. Charles Borromeo Parish! St. Charles Borromeo School Dear Parishioners, Here in the second week of Advent, our Church celebrates a number of beautiful feasts. The Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, normally a holyday of obligation, is celebrated tomorrow. Our Lady of Guadalupe is celebrated on Dec. 12th and all the students will attend Mass together. Did you know that our Blessed Mother is known as the Patroness of the Americas under the title Our Lady of Guadalupe? We invite you to join us in the morning or with our Hispanic community on Thursday evening. How fortunate we are to have the example of the saints to bear witness to us today! That the Church recognizes special days to remember the lives of the saints encourages the rest of us to live lives of virtue, too. Our students in grades 5-8 are preparing our annual Advent Song and Prayer Service. This is an evening of singing, prayer, and reflection designed to give a brief respite from the hurriedness of life. We cordially invite you to attend either our dress rehearsal at 1:30 Dec. 19th in the church or that evening at 7:00. Thanking you for the blessings we receive from your daily prayers as well as your financial support! Thank you for helping SCB families grow generation to generation! Second Sunday of Advent, December 8, 2013 St. Charles Borromeo Religious Education Dear Parishioners: Today, at the 8:30 Mass we welcome more than 50 Confirmation candidates, their sponsors and families. We will celebrate the Rite of Acceptance, often called, the Signing of the Cross with these young members of our parish. The Sign of the Cross is perhaps THE major symbol of our Christian faith. We are signed with the Cross at our Baptism, and we usually begin and end our prayers with the Sign of the Cross. Once again, at the celebration of the sacrament of Confirmation, which is a sealing of our baptism, candidates will be signed with the cross on their forehead, with chrism. We may make the sign of the cross so often it becomes rote – so familiar – so automatic – that we lose sight of what it is we are doing and what it means. Today’s “Rite” is a good way to pause and reflect on the meaning behind this symbolic, ritual action: The Cross is one of the major symbols of our Christian faith We were first signed with the cross at our Baptism The Sign of the Cross is a Trinitarian Prayer – we are praying in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit The manner in which we make the Sign of the Cross reminds us of the central teachings of our faith. We carry the mark of Christ, the cross, much like animals who have been branded with their owner’s symbol. Each time we make the Sign of the Cross we are reminded who we are and whose we are: We belong to Christ – we are the Body of Christ. A rite or a ritual is an established way of doing something. Rites in the Catholic Church involve words and gestures; they are not passive, we are active participants in the Rite. In the church, our rites also include practices and traditions we have received through the ages. We are called to fully, actively and consciously enter into the rite during our liturgies – it is in immersing ourselves in these rites and rituals that we are formed in faith! *** LUKE 18 PERMISSION FORMS ARE DUE TODAY *** We are so thankful for the gift of Reconciliation. More than 60 children and many of their parents celebrated this Sacrament last Thursday evening. The power of Jesus’ loving forgiveness in our lives is a wonderful gift for which to be thankful. Many thanks to the first grade parents who hosted a lovely reception. As we continue to prepare for the coming of Jesus on this Second Sunday of Advent, I’d like to share my family’s mealtime prayer during this season: O Divine Babe of Bethlehem, whom the angels love and adore, Come, take birth in our hearts. Amen. Perhaps you too can add that to your nightly prayers. We are grateful for your prayers and support of all our Formation programs – thank you. Second Sunday of Advent, December 8, 2013 With the holidays fast approaching, the fastest and easiest way to get your gift cards is by signing up for PrestoPay via www.shopwithscrip.com! Do you like music you hear on Joy FM? Do you love Jesus and going to Mass? If so, then our youth mass is for you. This will be taking place at 5 o'clock on Sunday December 1st and December 15th! If you have never been to this Mass, it is fun for the whole family! I encourage you to try it out and see if you like it! You just might find a new Mass time for your Sunday obligation! Questions, call Sam 636-328-2106 Welcome to St. Charles Borromeo Parish! Please pray for our expectant moms: Viki, Michelle, Jane (December) Katie (March) Cassie (May) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Let us pray: for medical professionals who are involved in the destruction of human life, may they repent and open their hearts to God’s mercy and love in preparation for the coming of Christ. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ IMPORTANT NEWS FROM BIRTHRIGHT Birthright of St. Charles is considering having hours on Saturday mornings, but we need volunteers! Could you please help us? We have the counselors in place but will need volunteers that are willing to be trained to answer the phones. Birthright is an alternative to abortion offering positive solutions to any woman facing a crisis pregnancy. We offer pregnancy testing, professional counseling, referrals, baby items and practical help. ALL services are FREE and Confidential. We are at 205 North Fifth in St. Charles. Please call 636-724-1200 for more information. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ PENNIES FROM HEAVEN Our Pro-Life ministry has distributed our “Pennies From Heaven” baby bottles. The proceeds will help women in a crisis pregnancy pay for housing, and basic expenses for economically struggling families and their babies in the St. Charles area. What a beautiful Advent message this will be. Please take a bottle, fill it with change during the next few weeks, and return the bottle to the church or church office after the first of the year. Boxes for collection will be in the Narthex throughout the month of January. Thank you for your support! You will be making a difference in the lives of future generations. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ “Each according to his or her possibilities, profession and responsibilities, should feel in themselves an obligation to love and serve life, from its beginning to its natural end. It is, in fact, everyone’s duty to welcome human life as a gift to be respected, protected and promoted, even more so when it is fragile and in need of attention and care, either before birth or when it is in its final stages.” ~~Pope Benedict XVI, “Welcome Life, Before Birth and in its Final stages,” Angelus Address, February 3, 2008 “Life is too precious, do not destroy it. Life is life, fight for it.” ~~Blessed Mother Teresa In today’s Gospel, John the Baptist urges us to “Prepare the way of the Lord.” This is what Advent is all about, for we are called to help prepare the way of the Lord by making the real meaning of Christmas come alive in our own hearts, in our family and to reach out to those in need. Your loyal support of St. Vincent dePaul helps the suffering and poor celebrate Christmas. Volunteers are always needed for this important ministry. Please call Matt Medina at 636-946-5756 or Joyce Cain at 636-448-2021. Vinnie VINNIE’S AUTOS ...a car donation and transfer program of the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, will have helped approximately seventy families receive basic transportation vehicles during 2013. We need your help and your neighbors need your help. We need more cars so that we can empower more people to get to work. During this Christmas season, please consider those whom Our Lord can bless through our generosity. For more information, please telephone the Vinnie’s Autos Program Manager, Greg Marino, at 314-881-6005. FRAUD ALERT! It has been reported to the Archdiocese of St. Louis that an alleged fraudulent solicitation of funds for Typhoon Haiyan relief was made over the phone using the Archdiocese of St. Louis’s name. During this alleged incident the caller asked for a credit card number. At this time we wish to make the public aware that the Archdiocese of St. Louis is not soliciting donations over the phone for this purpose and any call regarding donations for typhoon relief did not originate with us. We are accepting donations for typhoon relief through special collections at Sunday Masses. All donations collected by the Archdiocese of St. Louis will be directly turned over to Catholic Relief Services. Second Sunday of Advent, December 8, 2013 CRHP Christ Renews His Parish Men’s Weekend: February 8/9 Women’s Weekend: February 22/23 (both weekends bilingual) One of the ways parishioners are not only growing closer to God, but also bringing our Latino and Anglo communities together is in the sharing and conducting of our CRHP retreats. Over the next several weeks, individual testimonies will be shared by past participants who felt so moved that they want to share the experience with other parishioners. This retreat is for all SCB parishioners and it is put on by SCB parishioners under the general direction of a guiding committee as well as planning from 35+ years of CRHP retreats nationwide, Past attendees have shared that they were a little nervous about signing up, however they were so thankful for the opportunity to listen to how Christ has been a part of different people’s lives and relate that to how Christ has been in their life. Everyone’s spiritual journey is unique. Please prayerfully consider attending our next retreat. For more information or to sign-up, see the parish website: www.borromeoparish.com YOUR DONATION, LARGE OR SMALL, CAN MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE! Through the Catholic Relief Services website (www.CRS.org), as a parish we could donate the gift of education, food, health, water, etc. For example, for $50 we could help a community with 5 infant scales, a modified bike for a child with disabilities, or for $160 we could buy tools for a community so they can dig a well or provide counseling for kids that are at risk for joining a gang. It would be a good way to show solidarity, and we could make a difference while spending a small amount individually. If you are interested in joining in this effort, please call the parish office at 946-1893. Thanks! Christmas Music on 102.5 The Archdiocese of St. Louis is again sponsoring the annual programming of Christmas carols on Fresh 102.5 FM. The partnership with “The Christmas Station” is an opportunity to evangelize through use of the media to connect with the community. Archbishop Robert J. Carlson will record Christmas greetings that highlight the importance of Christmas. “We see this as a great opportunity to let the Catholic Church in St. Louis have a hand in reminding people of the true message of Christmas, which is the birth of our Savior,” said a spokesperson for the Archdiocese. Christmas music will run through December 25. New to the area? We look forward to personally meeting you. Please take time after Mass or whenever you may be present for parish activities to introduce yourself and to call our church office to register. Not been active? If you are inactive in the practice of your Catholic faith, we encourage you to return. If you would like to speak with someone on the parish staff, please do not hesitate to contact any one of us. Receiving the Sacraments. If a previous marriage has kept you from receiving the Sacraments, we invite you to contact one of the priests or our deacons. In most cases we can work with you toward a favorable solution so that you can again receive the Sacraments of the Church. Have a heavy heart? Our Catholic faith has a beautiful gift in the Sacrament of Reconciliation, or Confession. If some past sins have kept you from fully embracing your faith, Jesus Christ wants to offer you the healing and wholeness you need. There is no sin that was not nailed to the Cross, so bring your burdens to the confessional and hear the words of comfort, “I absolve you of your sins.” Confessions at Borromeo are Saturday evenings from 4:00—4:45, or you are invited to contact one of our priests for a private visit. Welcome to St. Charles Borromeo Parish! Think about this: Just one Fair Trade purchase from every American churchgoer this Christmas would lift one million families out of abusive poverty for one whole year. Fair Trade is a trading partnership based on respect and equity, and is intended to remedy iniquities that may accompany free trade. Fair Trade Programs follow a set of principles such as: trade as a tool for poverty alleviation, transparency and accountability, fair prices, gender equity, safe working conditions, no child exploitation and concern for the environment. Look for the symbols above to ensure you are buying items that are fairly traded. In these tough economic times, it is often very easy to purchase something within our monetary limits without considering the human cost. This Holiday season, please stop and think about where the products you are purchasing were made. It is usually best to buy items that are fairly traded from poor countries in Asia, Latin America and Africa. Otherwise it is best to buy from countries that adhere to fair labor practices, such as Canada, Australia, Japan, United States, Germany, France, the UK, Spain, or Belgium. Here is some information to make your “socially just” Christmas shopping a little easier. You may consider pooling the money that would have been spent on small gifts for the office Christmas party or between family members and make a larger donation to Catholic Relief Services, Oxfam International or Heifer International. During the festival, parishioners will be asked to “adopt” a new family to call, send cards to and to pray for. Ministry heads will be invited to attend a Council meeting. Parish Involvement/Rebuilt Discussion The following points were elicited from Rebuilt (a book written by Michael White and Tom Corcoran): We need to make sure we are making everyone feel welcome and included. Our parish is very diverse, a great strength for us. Are we clear about our parish vision? Does it show in each of our ministries? We will read chapters 10-12 before the December meeting. Forum on Social Concerns – Interest was expressed in planning an evening hosted by Borromeo. Speakers would witness on social justice issues.
