a time gone by. Dance floors with flashing lights
synchronized to the music, made famous by the
movie Saturday Night Fever. Guys decked out in
suits, often white with colorful Qiana shirts. Girls
dressed to kill in skirts or dresses, spinning on the
dance floor in stilettos
to music cranking at 130
beats per minute.

Being from Long Island
it all started for me in
2001 in Islip. The place
had a doorway in the
middle of a strip mall.
You would walk down
this long hallway towards
the back of the building
and there enter what
was at the time Disco
heaven. The place was
pretty huge even by
today’s standards. The
club was like a rectangle
divided into 4 equal
quadrants. The lighted
raised dance floor was
back left. Back right was
a huge 4 sided walk
around bar with another
one like this front left. To
the right and up a few
steps when you walked
in was a lounge area with
a small wooden dance
floor and lots of plush
soft seating peppered
around. I think there were
8 or 10 huge screens
in the place along the
back wall with a constant
slide show going that was
synced to the music.
Hustle
was
already
around for a few years by
the time I was introduced
to it here at 2001 back in
1976. I had seen it here or
there and tried dancing
it with some friends who
were not very good at
it, but this was a whole
new level. No longer was
it a simple touch step
type dance or one that
many people remember
as the Rope Hustle with
a single syncopation,
this was a dance with 2
syncopations that was
in my eye totally flying
around the dance floor
with tricks, dips, and lifts
added. It was for me
a jaw dropping moment
and I wanted in.
out to dance has greatly
diminished. In other
cases there are dance
promoters working hard
to pull in dancers by
running dance nights at
local venues and some
of the nicer local dance
studios.
Other clubs from the
Island that many of
you may remember
as the scene matured
were
Decameron’s,
Uncles Sam’s, Zachary’s,
Channel 80, Speaks/
Speak Easy, Feathers, Poor
Peter’s, Penrods, Chaz,
Cherries and so many
more. My apologies if I left
out one of your favorites.
I can see people reading
this right now, shaking
their heads and saying,
“How could he forget
….???? !!!!“ There was
easily a different club for
every night of the week
and there were enough
people to fill them given
that this was prime time
for Baby Boomers.
So I asked myself what
might be done to boost
the energy level a bit at
some of the local dance
venues and I came
up with a few possible
ingredients. This list is sort
of a set of suggestions, is
in no particular order and
is put out their for both
those that run dance
nights and for those who
attend.
I did not expect to get
this far off track with local
Disco history, but while
playing the music I talked
about earlier, it brought
back so many memories,
feelings and that sense of
what a good time those
days were.
Today many of us who
dance, don’t have the
choices of all the clubs
we once did. Music has
changed, we have aged,
many of us like more than
just dancing Hustle and
obviously we have way
more responsibilities than
we did when we were in
our 20’s, to go out and
dance every night even
if we wanted to and had
the energy to do so.
Our choices when we
do go out are somewhat
limited. Some clubs still
attract a small dance
crowd, but the choices
here are few as the
number of people going
I’m thankful that we still
have places to shake
our booty, but I would
be lying if I said I did not
miss the energy of dance
nights from days gone by.
Dress Up...!!! Look Good,
Feel Good, Dance Good
was how I started this off.
Some do this all the time
and thank you to those
who do. For those of us
that take a night out a
little more casually, step
up the wardrobe a little.
A night out where people
are looking good works
for everyone. We all
tend to feel better when
dressed up, and when
we do this as a group, it
adds to the environment
we dance in and energy
that we bring.
Music – This is so, so, so
important that I can’t
stress it enough. To those
that run studios, dance
nights and even run clubs.
Get the music right...!
Play the music that sends
a buzz through the crown
and has people leaving
their seats to get up on
the floor. It tends to get
too easy for those playing
the music to get caught in
a rut. This is your craft. This
is what people come out
to dance for. If that music
does not have them
getting up to dance and
staying on the floor, you
need to find music that
will, and there is a ton
of it out there. Don’t get
caught up in what you
like to listen to but rather
what your crown wants to
dance to.
Venues, Support, Cost
- I’m lumping this all
into one here as it all
kind of works together.
Venues are important
but also cost money
to use, run, rent and
occupy. It’s tough to find
those that have a nice
ambiance, a good floor
and are affordable to
operate. If anyone finds
one out there locally,
and you know others
that promote dance
nights, share what you
know. Maybe someone
will pick it up and get
something going. As part
of this, dancers need to
stop being so cheap.
Yes, I said it. Dancers are
known for this and I can
say I’ve experienced it
on both coasts. It costs
money to run these
events with expenses
going up every year.
I have no idea how a
promoter can operate a
night today that includes
a meal, a dance lesson
and the general cover
charge for about $15.00.
The club 2001that I talked
about earlier during pre1980 years was $20 just to
walk in! When there are
special nights at special
venues, with shows or
some other theme that
promoters work hard at
putting on, support them.
If you don’t you will not
have these choices in
the future as this is about
basic economics.
Ok, I’m getting off my
soapbox now and think
I’ll put on some more
of those tunes and take
few spins in my den.
