MASS & COMMUNAL ANOINTING OF THE SICK OCTOBER 13TH
The sick members of our community are invited for a
semi-annual parish celebration of the Sacrament of the
Anointing of the Sick within the Mass on Sunday, October 13th at 3:00PM in the lower church. A social will follow at St. Joseph Center. The entrance from Newkirk
Ave, which is wheelchair accessible, will be open for the
occasion. Parishioners who wish to pray with and for the
sick, but are not necessarily in need of the Sacrament, are
encouraged to attend the Eucharist as well.

DROGADICTOS ANÓNIMOS - OCT 19 & OCT 20
Drogadictos Anónimos (Drug Addicts Anonymous), a
group out of The Corona Self-Help Center in Elmhurst,
NY, will be visiting our parish to inform us of this program and to ask for our support. They will be fundraising
with the selling of their T-shirts.
YEAR OF FAITH
The ninth episode ("Prayer and the Life of the Spirit")
of the DVD series Catholicism will be shown on
Wednesday, October 23rd, at 7:30PM in the rectory.
ALL SOULS ENVELOPES
All registered parishioners will have the All Souls
envelope in their envelope set. Envelopes are also available at the rear of the church in English & Spanish. Please

placed on the altar for All Souls Day, November 2nd.

SAINT TERESA OF JESUS (1515-1582)

Let nothing disturb you; let nothing frighten you.
Gifted with a passionate spirit, young Teresa dreamed of
converting Muslims and becoming a martyr. All things
are passing; God never changes. But her mother’s death
when Teresa was fourteen inspired lifelong devotion to
Our Lady, and Teresa entered the Carmelites, Mary’s
order, despite her father’s objections and her own fragile
health. Patience gains everything. Initially, she enjoyed
her lax convent’s sociability and “busyness,” but mystical
prayer and John of the Cross’ collaboration inspired her to
reform the Carmelites. Whoever has God, lacks nothing.
When her ideals encountered resistance and brought
suffering, she maintained her peace- - and humor.
Discovered devouring leftovers, she told her mildly
scandalized nuns, “When I fast, I fast! When I eat, I eat!”
To nuns demanding less work and more prayer in the
convent schedule, she retorted: “What we really need
around here are fewer starry eyes and more strong arms!”
God alone is enough! The italicized sentences here are
her “Breviary Bookmark,” the simple, profound prayer of
Teresa, the first woman Doctor of the Church.

GOD REVEALED TO THE NATIONS
Our extended lesson in discipleship continues this
weekend with a focus on the centrality of thanksgiving to
the Christian life. We hear stories of foreigners who
experience the healing, cleansing power of the God of
Israel and give the Lord thanks. In today’s episode from
the book of Kings the prophet Elisha cures a foreigner
named Naaman of his leprosy. Naaman returns to thank
Elisha and pledges to worship only the God of Israel from
that day forward. The Gospel presents the story of the
cleansing of ten lepers. It is the Samaritan - also a
foreigner - who returns to give Jesus thanks and give God
glory and praise. “The Lord has revealed to the nations
his saving power,” sings the psalmist. “Sing joyfully to
the Lord . . . Sing praise” (Psalm 98:2, 4).

Wódz Syryjski Naaman, który był trędowaty, zanurzył
się siedem razy w Jordanie, według słowa męża Bożego, a
ciało jego na powrót stało się jak ciało małego dziecka i
został oczyszczony. Wtedy wrócił do męża Bożego z całym
orszakiem, wszedł i stanął przed nim, mówiąc: Oto
przekonałem się, że na całej ziemi nie ma Boga poza
Izraelem! A teraz zechciej przyjąć dar wdzięczności od
twego sługi! On zaś odpowiedział: Na życie Pana, przed
którego obliczem stoję - nie wezmę! Tamten nalegał na
niego, aby przyjął, lecz on odmówił. Wtedy Naaman rzekł:
Jeśli już nie chcesz, to niechże dadzą twemu słudze tyle
ziemi, ile para mułów unieść może, ponieważ odtąd twój
sługa nie będzie składał ofiary całopalnej ani ofiary
krwawej innym bogom, jak tylko Panu.

Stało się, że Jezus zmierzając do Jerozolimy
przechodził przez pogranicze Samarii i Galilei. Gdy
wchodzili do pewnej wsi, wyszło naprzeciw Niego
dziesięciu trędowatych. Zatrzymali się z daleka i głośno
zawołali: Jezusie, Mistrzu, ulituj się nad nami. Na ich
widok rzekł do nich: Idźcie, pokażcie się kapłanom. A gdy
szli, zostali oczyszczeni. Wtedy jeden z nich widząc, że jest
uzdrowiony, wrócił chwaląc Boga donośnym głosem,
upadł na twarz do nóg Jego i dziękował Mu. A był to
Samarytanin. Jezus zaś rzekł: Czy nie dziesięciu zostało
oczyszczonych? Gdzie jest dziewięciu? żaden się nie
znalazł, który by wrócił i oddał chwałę Bogu, tylko ten
cudzoziemiec. Do niego zaś rzekł: Wstań, idź, twoja wiara
cię uzdrowiła.

REFLEKSJA NAD CZYTANIAMI NIEDZIELNYMI...
„Odtąd nie będę składał ofiary innym bogom, jak tylko
Panu” (por. 2 Krl 5,17) – przyrzeka uzdrowiony z trądu
Syryjczyk Naaman. Także uzdrowiony Samarytanin
z dzisiejszej Ewangelii z radością oddaje chwałę Bogu.
Obaj cudzoziemcy okazali większą wdzięczność Bogu
niż dziewięciu Izraelitów, którzy otrzymując tę samą
łaskę, poszli dalej swoją drogą. Potrzeba nam wielkiej
wiary i zjednoczenia z Jezusem, abyśmy nie przeoczyli
Jego darów albo nie uznali ich za coś, co nam się należy,
dając się przez to zawstydzić niewierzącym.

LECTURAS DE HOY
Primera lectura - Naamán, purificado de su lepra,
regresó a Eliseo y prometió obedecer al Señor
(2 Reyes 5:14-17).
Salmo - El Señor nos ha mostrado su amor y su lealtad
Segunda lectura - Acuérdate de Cristo Jesús que fue
resucitado de entre los muertos. Si perseveramos con él,
también reinaremos con él (2 Timoteo 2:8-13).
Evangelio - Después que diez leprosos se encontraron
curados por Jesús, solamente uno, un samaritano, regresa
para darle gracias (Lucas 17:11-19).
DIOS REVELADO A LAS NACIONES
Nuestra extendida lección sobre el ser discípulo
continua este fin de semana enfocando lo central que es el
agradecimiento en la vida cristiana. Escuchamos relatos
sobre extranjeros que tienen el poder sanador y limpiador
del Dios de Israel y dan gracias al Señor. En el episodio de
hoy proveniente del libro de Reyes, el profeta Eliseo cura
al extranjero llamado Naamán de su lepra. Naamán vuelve
para darle las gracias a Eliseo y promete adorar únicamente
al Dios de Israel de ahí en adelante. El Evangelio presenta
el relato de la cura de los diez leprosos. Es el samaritano –
también un extranjero – que retorna para darle gracias a
Jesús y dar gloria y alabanza a Dios. “El Señor da a
conocer su victoria, revela a las naciones su justicia”, canta
el salmista. “Aclama al Señor… griten, vitoreen,
toquen” (Salmo 98:2, 4).

SANTA TERESA DE ÁVILA (1515-1582)

Teresa nació en Ávila, España en una familia rica y de
fe profunda. A los siete años quería ser mártir por amor a
Dios. No obstante, a los 12 soñaba con el amor y el
romance para su vida, pero unos años después, la muerte
de su madre y una enfermedad le hicieron cambiar. A los
20 años se hizo carmelita y 18 años después, debido a la
comodidad de la vida de monasterio, apoyada en una
visión mística, consideró necesaria una reforma. Bajo la
llamada de Dios y la ayuda de su director espiritual, san
Juan de la Cruz, junto con otras dieciséis hermanas
emprendió la reforma de la Orden Carmelita formando
una comunidad más estricta en la que se vivía en absoluta
pobreza, se comía del trabajo fruto de la costura, se vivía
en oración y se dormía en petates. Siendo superiora fue
inigualable en el amor y el servicio a la comunidad. Sus
escritos, así como su experiencia mística, fueron
profundos. Para ella, “sóén juez, gobernador y,a Orden

nada más. Fue la primera mujer en ser declarada Doctora
de la Iglesia.
