November 21, 2010
Our Lord Jesus Christ the King
Dear Cathedral Family,
Today we celebrate our special Feast Day - The Feast of Christ the King!
Our very special celebration today will include the Dedication of our new
Green Space and Meditation area. Archbishop Gregory will bless this space
and all are invited to join us in the lower parking lot immediately following
the noon Mass. Our Men’s Club and Hispanic community will celebrate by
serving pancakes and tacos - please join us!
May we all continue to honor Christ our King as we work to know, love and
serve as Jesus did.
Sincerely in Christ,

A Glimpse of our History
The Solemnity of Christ the King marks the end of the Liturgical
year which starts with the First Sunday of Advent and comes to a
close on our parish’s name date. The Feast of Christ the King is
also special to our parish because the cornerstone for our
Cathedral was blessed and laid by Bishop O’Hara on October 31,
1937, the Feast of Christ the King. On that same day, the
original construction on the school building was completed.
Father Moylan and the founding families of the parish showed
great foresight in building so large and beautiful a church: a
French Gothic architectural style of the old world, providing
seating for more than seven hundred, when the parish numbered
only four hundred individuals in 1937. Our parish community
now numbers over 4,000 families.
Our campus includes several statues depicting the Kingship of
Christ. One statue appears over the Cathedral’s front doors on the façade
and another stands near the entrance to Christ the King School.
Thanksgiving Day Mass
On Thursday, November 25, all parishioners and visitors are invited to our
annual Thanksgiving Mass at 10 am in the Cathedral. Archbishop Gregory
will be the principal celebrant. Please note that the only other Mass on
Thanksgiving Day will be at 6:45 am.
Note: Parish offices will be closed Wednesday, Thursday and Friday,
November 24, 25 and 26.

RESPECT LIFE MINISTRY
The King of Life
The liturgy for today’s Feast of Christ
the King tells us that his is “a
kingdom of truth and life, a kingdom
of holiness and grace, a kingdom of
justice, love, and peace.” Indeed, all
these realities fit together perfectly.
Truth and life go together, because
when we know the truth about God’s
love and care for creation, we will
respect all life. When we know the
truth about ourselves, that we belong
only to God, then we realize we
cannot destroy any other person. A
respect for life, personally as well as
in our laws and policies as a nation,
is the first requirement of justice and
an absolute condition of peace. And
the holier we are, the more we allow
God’s grace into our every thought
and desire, the more we will adhere
to truth, defend life, and promote
justice and peace.

Life Ministry, please contact

Food Drive to Support Families in Need this Holiday Season
They’re Knocking on our Door
For most of us, the Christmas season brings joy and hope for peace on earth, but in households all across
Atlanta, many parents don’t have enough food to feed their children, much less gifts to put under the tree.
Buckhead Christian Ministry hears those families knocking and sees their hungry faces, and that’s why BCM is
reaching out to Christ the King for help during this critical time.
After each Mass on December 4 and 5, bags with food lists will be distributed. Please fill and
return your bags to the BCM containers next to the downstairs reception desk.
Donation envelopes are also available.
Thank you for making Christmas merry for
families throughout Atlanta!

Joyous Toys celebrates the
Miracle of Christmas, the birth of

bringing gifts and toys to
children in families experiencing an
emergency. When job loss or hospitalization
hits a low-income family, meager savings for Christmas
must go to paying off bills, leaving parents with nothing to give their
children on Christmas
morning. These families need
your help to put presents under the tree! The
shelves of the Joyous Toys ‘store’ are stocked with
toys, ready for parents to come and find ‘the perfect gift’ for their kids. Last
year, 950 children opened presents on Christmas thanks to the generosity
Of our friends

WELCOME FROM THE PASTOR AND
CATHEDRAL STAFF
Dear Friends in Christ,
On behalf of Archbishop Wilton Gregory, the Clergy and
staff, I welcome you to the Cathedral of Christ the King. I
hope and pray that you feel welcomed by our parish
community and that your spiritual and pastoral needs will
be met.
We are a very active parish with 4,300 families and over one
hundred ministries. We encourage our members to share
their gifts of time, talent and treasure.
Our mission statement is to “Know, Love and Serve as Jesus
Did”. This is the mission of each disciple of Christ and, if
you are new, I hope and pray that you will join us and be
part of the community of Christ the King. If you are passing
through or visiting the city of Atlanta, I hope you enjoy your
worship experience and please visit us again.
If you would like to know more about our parish, you can
visit our website at www.cathedralofchristtheking.org or
email us.
May we, this day and all the days of our lives, know, love
and serve as Jesus did.
Prayers and Blessings,
Father Frank McNamee, Pastor
