The presentation of the lord
Dear Parishioners,
Beginning February 10, Fr. John Kieran will be taking
a sabbatical as he leaves for El Paso, Texas where he
will spend time focusing on his Spanish studies.
Fr. John will be the guest of Msgr. Arturo Bañuelas,
pastor at St Pius X Catholic Church, for two months.
Fr. John requests your prayers to help his learning so
that he may better serve our Spanish speaking
parishioners.
We wish Fr. John safe travels and look forward to his return.

Presentation of the Lord
Today, February 2, we celebrate the feast of the Presentation of the Lord. The
feast celebrates the presentation of Christ in the temple at Jerusalem on the
40th day after His birth. This feast is also known as Candlemas, since the
candles are blessed prior to the liturgy. Today’s celebration is made more
special because this lovely feast rarely falls on a Sunday…it was last celebrated
on a Sunday 11 years ago.

The Cathedral has Perpetual Adoration which means there is always someone
praying in front of the Blessed Sacrament in our chapel twenty-four hours a day,
seven days a week. We are always in need of guardians who will make a
commitment to come one hour per week. We especially need guardians the
following hours: Noon to 1 pm on Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and
Thursday; 1 to 2 pm on Saturday and Sunday; 2 to 3 pm and 7 to 8 pm on
Saturday, Sunday, and Friday; 3 to 4 pm on Sunday, Wednesday and Friday; and
5 to 6 pm on Friday. If interested, please email [email protected].
Stewardship of Treasure
How shall I repay the Lord for his goodness to me?” Psalm 116
When Mary and Joseph brought Jesus to the temple, they offered a sacrificial gift “in accord
with the dictate in the law of the Lord.” An offering of a specific size or kind is not “dictated”
when we bring our gifts to the altar at Mass. Is my gift reflective of the many blessings I have
received?

PRAYING PACEM IN TERRIS: In
the economic sphere, it is evident that
a man has the inherent right not only
to be given the opportunity to work,
but also to be allowed the exercise of
personal initiative in the work he
does.
The conditions in which a man works
form a necessary corollary to these
rights. They must not be such as to
weaken his physical or moral fibre, or
militate against the proper
development of adolescents to
manhood. Women must be accorded
such conditions of work as are
consistent with their needs and
responsibilities as wives and mothers.

CTK BELIEVES
If presented with the opportunity to give the 30-second elevator pitch, or have the
3-minute cocktail conversation on our faith that could change the lives of those
around us in ways we couldn't even imagine, would we be ready? At the next CTK
BELIEVES, a once-a-month speaker series ministry, Betsy Orr, General Partner of
LOBOCK, LLLP, will help us all with this as she leads a discussion on “Ready to
Testify? Developing and Sharing your 30-second and 3-minute Faith Testimony.”
The event takes place on Tuesday, February 11 from 7:30-8:30 am. Bring a friend,
come early for Mass at 6:45 am that day, and then stay for networking and Betsy's
presentation. To register for the event go to www.cathedralofchristtheking.org/
BELIEVES. The nominal $10 registration fee for the event can be paid online
when you register, or at the door. The fee covers the cost of the event and
provides the funding for sponsoring CHRP Scholarships. Questions? Contact

CKS Peacemakers
Each year, Christ the King School recognizes students from each homeroom who
have been outstanding role models for initiating just solutions in the classrooms
and on the playground. One of the most special things about this coveted award
is that students are elected by their peers for this recognition. These students all
show respect towards others students as well as their teachers, and are honest,
thoughtful, and loyal. These students also display acts of caring, generosity and
kindness and follow the virtues taught by CKS and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Like Dr. King, we are the Lord’s messengers of peace and hope to the world, so
that all God’s children can be respected and accepted. Congratulations to all
those who were recognized as Peacemakers this year.
Cullum Owings Scholarship
A special part of the Peacemaker Mass is
the presentation of the Cullum Owings
Scholarship. Cullum was a student at CKS
from Kindergarten through sixth grade. In
2002, Cullum was killed tragically in a
highway crash during his senior year of
college, but his spirit remains alive at CKS.
A scholarship was established by dear
friends of the Owings’ family, and many of Cullum and younger brother Pierce’s
friends from CKS contribute to the fund annually. This year a scholarship was
given to a fifth grade boy and a fifth grade girl who fully embody Cullum’s personality in that they are well-rounded and display a balance of academic, athletic
and social interests. They are compassionate, show kindness to all, and display
natural leadership inside and outside the classroom. Because these scholarships
are to be given to a student who makes the school community all the better for
their presence, it is fitting that it is awarded during the Peacemaker Mass. This
year’s winners of the Cullum Owings Scholarship are Hayden Hollingsworth and
Mitch Neel.

SCOUT SUNDAY
This
Sunday,
February 2, Boy Scouts across the
country celebrate Scout Sunday, not
only celebrating the founding of the
Boy Scouts, but also intended to make
people in houses of worship aware of
Scouting, and to allow Scouts to live
out their "Duty to God" pledged each
week. The Scout Law says that a
"Scout is Reverent" and the Scouts of
all ages promise to do their "Duty to
God". These values strengthen youth
character in their family, community
and faith. We are proud to recognize
the Boy Scouts in our parish with a
special Mass held today at 9 am. We
are also pleased to support and
recognize several of our parish scouts
who have worked to specifically earn
Religious Awards presented at the end
of the Scout Mass.

WELCOME FROM THE PASTOR AND
CATHEDRAL STAFF
Dear Friends in Christ,
On behalf of Archbishop Wilton Gregory, the Clergy and
staff, I welcome you to the Cathedral of Christ the King. I
hope and pray that you feel welcomed by our parish
community and that your spiritual and pastoral needs will

We are a very active parish with 4,300 families and over one
hundred ministries. We encourage our members to share

Our mission statement is to “Know, Love and Serve as Jesus

you are new, I hope and pray that you will join us and be
part of the community of Christ the King. If you are passing
through or visiting the city of Atlanta, I hope you enjoy your
worship experience and please visit us again.
If you would like to know more about our parish, you can
visit our website at www.cathedralofchristtheking.org or

May we, this day and all the days of our lives, know, love
and serve as Jesus did.
Prayers and Blessings,
