It was none other than Pope Francis! It is no secret that he has done an amazing job sharing the Good News of the Gospel and the teachings of the Church in his seventeen months as Pope. He has reached out to countless numbers of people who are suffering or feeling lost or isolated. He is truly the "people's Pope." What FORTUNE magazine is bringing to our attention is the work that Pope Francis is doing to reform the Vatican's troubled finances. Pope Francis gathered together a group of Catholic business leaders and declared that sound financial management was a pillar of his greatest mission: aiding the poor and underprivileged. And changes are being instituted on a daily basis! The article goes into great detail, but the key is that accurate financial reports and reliable financial reporting systems are critical to the operations of the Holy See. Here at Saint Mark Church and School we generate monthly financial reports that are reviewed promptly by myself and our Principal, Mrs. McQueen. Every three months she and I prepare quarterly reports that are presented to the parish Finance Council and reviewed by those who have a financial background and an understanding of the parish operations. Each summer the Church and the School must file an annual report with the Archdiocese documenting all of the income and expenses for the year ended June 30th, and we must reconcile all of the bank account balances so that every dollar is accounted for. This can be a tedious process, but I am working with both the bookkeepers of the Church and the School so that we are following exactly what Pope Francis is doing in the Vatican. We must have accuracy and transparency! Once these reports are finalized I will present them to the Parish Finance Council and I will then prepare summaries that will be distributed to you, our parishioners. And I will be happy to answer any questions that you may have. We are blessed to have the theme of Stewardship as a pillar of our faith community. And, as parish leaders, we are accountable to each of you to be good stewards of the funds that you so generously donate to our parish ministries or pay in school tuition. Que el Señor nos siga bendiciendo siempre y en todo, Father Paul Padre Paul 23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time Saint Mark Church SPIRITUAL LIFE KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS September 7, 2014 SPIRITUAL LIFE SPEAKING OUT IN LOVE In the final verses of today’s Gospel reading Jesus says that when two or three are gathered in his name, “there am I in the midst of them” (Matthew 18:20). So we understand that fraternal correction is always undertaken in the presence of Jesus Christ. Likewise, encouraging the good in others is not only the right thing for us to do, it is a necessity. The LORD tells the prophet Ezekiel that if he does not speak out to dissuade a person from evil, then he too will be held responsible. We live in a “do your own thing” age where moral objectivity is often ignored. Clearly when the message we share with others is rooted in love, our motives cannot ever be misinterpreted. As Saint Paul writes, “Love does no evil to the neighbor; hence, love is the fulfillment of the law” (Romans 13:10). READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: The Knights of Columbus is honored to facilitate the St. Mark Parish Annual Picnic. We welcome and invite all parish family's to join us today September 7, 2014 from 12pm - 4pm at Chevron Park in El Segundo. Come enjoy the food, fun games and parish fellowship! Registration is required. Sat. Sept 13 Sun. Sept 14 EARLY CHILDHOOD The St. Mark Early Childhood religion readiness program begins next Sunday Sept 7 during out 9am mass. We welcome children who are 4 and 5 (or in kindergarten). Through experiences, music, movement and prayer the program helps our children grow in their awareness of God – the Creator, the Loving Parent, the Friend - and the wonderful world he has made for us to enjoy. Early Childhood is not an occasional “drop in” program nor is it “babysitting.” However, there is an understanding that illness and an occasionally family commitment may necessitate absence. Registration is required and will close when the maximum class size has been reached. CHILDREN’S LITURGY OF THE WORD Children’s Liturgy of the Word resumes on Sunday Sept 7 during the 9am mass. Children who are in grades 1 – 5 are invited to join the catechists when they are dismissed after the Opening Prayer. The group returns at the Offertory Procession. During their time together they will be reading, discussing and praying the Sunday readings, using the Lectionary for Children version. If you are unfamiliar with Children’s Liturgy, or if your child wishes, you may accompany him/her and observe the session. We are also in need of adults who would like to help about once a month. Please consider volunteering for this exciting ministry. But what about the children who attend nonCatholic private or public schools? Talk with school administrators and find out what steps they take to protect children from harm. Suggest that they review other abuse prevention programs to ensure that their policies and practices are up to date. And demand that all employees and volunteers who work in the school be properly screened, including background checks, before they are allowed to be near your children. For particular help you may call Suzanne Healy, director of Assistance Ministry at (213) 637-7650 or Helene Hickey at 310-821-6612. Joseph & Deborah Alvey September 7, 2014 SPIRITUAL LIFE TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION We know for certain that the sacrament of penance was a fairly rare event in the life of a Christian in the early centuries, but that everyone had a duty to admit their sins and ask forgiveness before giving thanks in the Sunday Eucharist and receiving Christ’s Body and Blood at the table. Everyone today is familiar with this same ancient pattern. We also know about Lent and its journey of renewal, and even those who are returning from summer vacations may speak of a fresh perspective on life and a resolve to do better. Saint Augustine spoke of a third kind of penance, beyond the turning of the catechumens to a different life, beyond the normal everyday fresh starts, to a form that is severe and serious. Certain sins broke faith with the community: the sinners were obliged to give their names to the bishop and were barred from participation in the Eucharist. Augustine mentioned sacrilege, adultery, and murder as the culprits, great wounds for the perpetrator, wounds that were serious, deadly, mortal. Penance was such a frightening prospect that many people delayed their baptism for fear that they would sin, a practice with which Augustine was well acquainted. Pastoral need would eventually call the church to reconsider its practice. SAINT MARK YOUNG ADULT MINISTRY The Saint Mark Young Adult Ministry works to meet the pastoral needs of singles and couples in their 20’s and 30’s in the parish and meet each month for prayer and fellowship as we encourage one another to live out the gospel in every day life. The next meeting will be on Sunday September 14 at 6:30pm in the school’s faculty room. Please enter the school through the front entrance on Coeur d’Alene Avenue.
