SAVORING THE EXPERIENCE
One of the wonderful things about vacations is the time
we spend two or three weeks afterward savoring the experience, sharing vacation photos and memories with our
family and friends. This
kind of reflection puts us
back in touch with the
original experience and
reminds us of the relaxation and wonder the vacation afforded us. Today, on the Third Sunday
of Easter, the Church
blesses us with reminders of what we celebrated two Sundays ago.
All three readings are
reflections on the meaning of the death and resurrection
of Christ. One of the threads running through these reflections is that the purpose of the Lord’s suffering, death,
and resurrection was to save us, to forgive our sins. We
are given fifty days to ponder this reality—fifty days to
savor the experience of Christ’s dying and rising for us.

Una de las cosas maravillosas sobre las vacaciones es que después de nuestro regreso nos pasamos dos o tres semanas saboreando la experiencia, compartiendo las fotos y recuerdos

This past Sunday, at a Mass in St. Augustine Cathedral, Bishop
Kicanas accepted 23 men into candidacy for the Permanent Diaconate. One of these men was our own
Niyibisi Shukurani of our African Community. At this
point, he has completed two of the four years of formation for this ministry.
Shukurani and his family are originally from the
country of Burundi, but came to the US from a refugee
camp in Tanzania. While living in the refugee camp, he
served as the Pastoral Leader of several parish communities, so
he brings with him a wealth of experience for his future ministry as a Deacon. His ability to serve our African Community is a
great gift as he speaks several of the languages which members of this community speak. Congratulations, Shukurani, on
this step toward your ordination as a Deacon!
El pasado domingo, en una Misa en la Catedral de San Agustín, el Sr.
Obispo Kicanas aceptó a 23 hombres en la candidatura para
el Diaconado Permanente. Uno de estos hombres fue
nuestro propio Niyibisi Shukurani de nuestra Comunidad Áfricana. Hasta ahora, ha completado dos de los cuatro años de
formación para este ministerio.
Shukurani y su familia son originarios del país de Burundi,
pero llegaron a los EE.UU. de un campo de refugiados en

his religious community of the Paulist
Fathers are located in the New York
area. Our parish community will be bidding him farewell at the
5:00 PM Saturday evening Mass on 2 May. Following the Mass
there will be a dinner reception in Nicholson Hall. Because the
hall is limited in the number it can accommodate, it will be a
ticketed event. In addition, so that the various communities
within our parish can be represented, the tickets, which cost $5,
are being made available in a proportioned manner for each of
the communities and are available at the Parish Office during
regular Office Hours (Monday – Thursday, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM).

With the growing diversity within our parish,
the Anglo Community is becoming a part of the
whole where it was once a majority. In addition, young families within our Anglo Community are an even smaller part of the larger community. As a result, you may be a family with
pre-school children and feeling as if you are the
only family in our parish at this stage of life.
Well be assured you aren’t alone – you just go to a different
Mass than some of the others. To help make connections with
these other families, our parish is hosting a new ministry we
are calling Parents of Pre-school Children (POPS for short).
The initial gathering – at which we will discuss what would be
supportive of you as a Catholic family – will be on Sunday, 17
May at 11:15 AM (after the 10:00 AM Mass) in Dougherty
Hall. Watch for more details in upcoming bulletins, and let us
know if you will be interested in joining in by calling the Parish Office (795-1633) or sending an e-mail to Fr. Ron

On Monday, 27 April the Theology
Uncorked program at Most Holy Trinity
Parish (1300 N. Greasewood Rd. – on
the northeast corner of Speedway Blvd. & Greasewood Rd.)
will feature members of our parish, and members of other
parish chapters of the St. Vincent de Paul Society (SVdP),
presenting information about the Bridges out of Poverty series they are hosting. This is a Human Development effort by
SVdP to educate those caught in the cycle of poverty about
what they can do to change their situation. This session begins at 7:00 PM and is open to all.
Catholic Foundation’s Annual Cornerstone Gala
Honors Deacons on Friday, 1 May
Each year, the Catholic Foundation hosts a Gala event
as a major fundraiser at which they honor individuals
and/or groups of people in service of the Catholic community of Tucson. This year the gala honors the Permanent Deacons of our diocese.
As our diocese recognizes the service of Deacon Mario
Aguirre, our parish also recognizes his service, especially
within our Hispanic Community. Thank you, Deacon Mario, for
your service and leadership within our community.

Cada año, la Fundación Católica organiza su mayor evento de
recaudación de fondos, la Gala “Piedra Angular” Anual, en
donde honra a individuos y/o grupos de personas que prestan
su servicio a la comunidad Católica de Tucson. Este año, la
gala honrará a los Diáconos permanentes de nuestra diócesis.
Así como nuestra diócesis reconoce el servicio del Diácono
Mario Aguirre, así, nuestra parroquia reconoce y agradece su servicio,
