May 4, Seventh Sunday of Easter
(Acts 1:12 -14; 1 Peter 4:13-16; John 17: 1-11a)
Even if persecuted
Those of us who come from other
countries and sometimes even those who have
been in this country for a long time but notice
the rapid changes in our society, sometimes
struggle with some of the customs and values
we face. We do not want our children to
adopt such customs, nor do we want them to
lose those values that include respecting the
dignity of another person and human life, the
sense of hospitality and sharing or the honesty
we like to think are part of our Hispanic
heritage. However, you just have to watch
the daily news or soap operas to see the
extent that lying, manipulation, political
corruption, greed, and competitiveness have
reached. How such ideas as “it is my life…” “I
am this way…” “I have to buy it because my
neighbors have it…” “this is my body and I
can do with it whatever I want…” “it is just a
white lie…” “they also take advantage of it…”
and “ she will pay for this…” have permeated
in our society.
In the early times of Christianity,
Christians were actively and violently
persecuted. Even during our days the
persecution of Christians still goes on in some
countries. It may not appear to us that we are
being persecuted because the signs may not
be as physically apparent. However, attacks
towards the values of the Gospel have spread
everywhere. The most dangerous thing is that
they appear in our homes and minds without
being noticed, pushing us to carelessly break
off or impacting our relationship with God and
others in a negative way. Today, as we face
these things, we are told not to be afraid to
profess Christ—in the midst of all the
difficulties—remaining true to our faith. This
is what gives real happiness.
For reflection
What gives me Joy? Does it have to do with
vengeance, with stepping over others to achieve my
goals, with the lack of loyalty or with buying lots of
things? What do I seek for my family and me?

FIRST HOLY COMMUNION … for 51 of our
children in the elementary school was a
beautiful celebration last week. Thank you to
Sister Patricia, Mrs. Crowley, Ms. Valverde
and so many others who prepared the children
so well. We have invited the children to come
to church during May wearing their First
Communion suits or dresses and they have
been reminded to tell their parents --SUNDAY CHURCH EVERY SUNDAY!
CONFIRMATION RETREAT … for the 23 students
in our religious education program was held
last Saturday with the Pax Christi Sisters --Sister Teresa and Sister Maria --- along with
Father Cruz. These students are preparing for
the Confirmation on Tuesday, May 13th with
some 70 other students from our elementary,
Academy and Boys’ High School. Come, Holy
Spirit, come into the hearts of your faithful!
FIRST CONFESSION … for our students in the
religious education program was celebrated
on this Saturday, May 3rd. Thanks, again, to
the Pax Christi Sisters, Fr. Cruz and the
priests for their help … FIRST COMMUNION for
this group will be Saturday, May 17th at the 12
noon Mass.
FLOWER SALE/RELIGIOUS ARTICLES SALE …
today, Sunday, May 4 … in the Cafeteria after
the Masses. Refreshments will be on sale as
well. Thank you to Mrs. McNally and the
Rosary Sodality.
COURT REPORTERS … job opportunities will be
explained to interested parishioners by Mr.
Tom Bess in the Lower Church. This is a
terrific employment chance with special

CONFIRMATION PRACTICE … for all students
who are receiving Confirmations is scheduled
for Wednesday, May 7th at 6:45 pm in the
church … ALL SPONSORS should also attend.
Their will be a practice, tickets will be
distributed and other information presented.
All students from the elementary school, the
religious education programs, the Academy
and the Boys High School must attend.
It is mandatory and your attendance will be

ORDINATION BUS … today is the last day to
decide and to make reservations for the bus
to St. Patrick’s Cathedral for Father Ron
Perez, our seminarian for the past three
years. Ron will be ordained on Saturday, May
10. The bus will leave the parking lot at 7:30
am and return at about 1 pm. Tickets are $10
for adults and $5 for children (up to 16 years

PARISH MASS … celebrated by Father Ron
Perez … is scheduled for Sunday, May 18 at 12
noon. Fr. Perez will give us his first priestly
blessings in the auditorium and there will be
some light refreshments. All are invited. We
are blessed to have such a special celebration
here at the parish and we hope that other
young men will think about and prepare for
the priesthood as well as the religious life as
sisters or brothers.
The church and the
people of the church need more priests,
brothers and sisters --- and where do they
come from --- they come from the people.

MAY CROWNING … of the Blessed Mother … on
Sunday, May 18 at 10:00 am in the plaza in
front of the church … between the 9 am
Spanish Mass and the 10:30 am Children’s
Mass. All students who have received First
Holy Communion are invited to be in the
procession in their suits or dresses. Please go
to the school in order to be placed in the
Procession.
ACADEMY RING MASS … is schedule for Friday,
May 9th at 12 noon. All are invited.
MOTHERS’ DAY … is next week, Sunday, May
11th. There will be a special blessing of our
mothers and grandmothers at all of the
Masses. The Holy Name Society (Santo
Nombre) is hosting a breakfast in the
auditorium after the 9 am Mass and the 10:30
am Mass. All are invited.
PENTECOST … is also next week, Sunday, May
11th. All parishioners --- men and women --young and old --- are encouraged to wear
something red --- the color of the Holy Spirit -- hats, ties, blouses, skirts, socks, shoes --RED! I know what red outfit I will be wearing.

CARDINAL’S APPEAL 2008 … has begun.
Envelopes were included in last week’s
bulletin for your gift.
So far, we have
received pledges of $15,000 and our goal is
$42,000. We ask for and we appreciate your
generosity.
NOVENAS … good things come in NINES! … a
novena is nine days of prayer to a saint, to
the Holy Spirit, to Our Lady. Why nine?
Because we are able to concentrate in a
particular way when we do something for nine
straight days and hopefully we are able to
grow in God’s grace if we do something --like praying --- for nine days. We thank the
Charismatic Group and the Sacred Heart
Society for their novenas. It is not a magic
number but it is a way of coming closer to
God.

YOUTH CONFERENCE
This July, St. Raymond’s LIFE TEEN is once
again planning a trip to the High School Youth
Conference at Franciscan University in
Steubenville, Ohio. We would like to bring as
many youth as possible to this life-changing,
Spirit-filled event. The experience of many
has been that the youth who attend the
Steubenville Youth Conference are most likely
to be leaders in evangelization, service,
dedication, prayer, witness, & commitment to
the Lord…especially when there is a youth
group in place for follow-up (such as we have
with LIFE TEEN). The total cost is $230 per
person, which includes meals, conference fee,
& bus transportation.

A young pastor recently told parishioners during
Sunday Mass that a family of immigrants had been
forced out of their home and needed a place to stay.
The family consisted of a young mother, her son, and
husband. The priest asked that a family from the
parish volunteer to take them in.
“Anyone willing to welcome the family into their
home please raise your hand,” the priest said. No
one did. It was a poor parish and maybe some
thought they could not to afford to feed additional
people.
After several moments of awkward silence the
priest insisted again until a family finally
volunteered to welcome the immigrants into their
home. The pastor invited them to the altar where,
much to the surprise of everyone present, he handed
them a beautiful statue of Mary, Jesus and Joseph.
The family became visibly emotional, while many in
the church said, “if we knew it was that family, we
would have raised our hands.”
The young priest, who took his vows just three
years go, proved to be wise beyond his years, giving
everyone a lesson in God’s love, humility, and
hospitality. And just as St. Paul said in his letter to
the Romans, the pastor urged his parishioners to
“share your belongings with the needy and open your
home to strangers.”
As we celebrate Pentecost, let’s remember that
the Holy Spirit made it possible for people of diverse
languages and cultures to understand the message of
salvation and for everyone to have a personal
encounter with Christ. No one was singled out because
of their culture, language or background. And it is this
encounter with Christ and the Holy Spirit that
summons every Christian to welcome the migrant,
refugee, and stranger among us. The Gospel calls us to
feed and clothe the poor, care for the sick and to help
those in need. St. Paul also tells us that our love for
one another must be completely sincere. It is not
enough to just say we care about someone, we must
show it through our actions.
Our help can take many shapes and forms, from
providing assistance directly to immigrants to
contributing and working in parish and diocesan
programs that aid the poor and sick. The U.S. bishops
urge us, as Christians, to march in solidarity with
immigrants and the poor, demanding respect for their
basic human rights; we must welcome newcomers to
our parishes, schools and community regardless of
their status, culture, or background, and we must
remember that many do not want to leave their native
countries and families, but migrate to escape
economic devastation, persecution, war and other
desperate circumstances. By welcoming and helping
those in need, we are welcoming the Lord into our
hearts and the Holy spirit into our lives.

MISA DE LA PARROQUIA... celebrada por el
Padre Ron Pérez... será el Domingo 18 de
Mayo a las 12 del día. El Padre nos dará su
primera bendición sacerdotal en el auditorio y
habrá algunos refrigerios ligeros. Todos están
invitados. Estamos bendecidos de tener esta
celebración tan especial aquí en la parroquia
y esperamos que otros jóvenes piensen y se
preparen para el sacerdocio al igual que a la
vida religiosa como hermana o hermano. La
iglesia y las personas de la iglesia necesitan
más sacerdotes, hermanos y hermanas--- y de
donde vienen—vienen de la gente. Promueva
vocaciones en su propia familia.
CORONACIÓN DE MARIA... es el Domingo 18 de
Mayo a las 10:00 AM en la plaza de enfrente
de la Iglesia... entre la Misa de Español de 9
AM y la Misa de los niños de las 10:30am.
Todos los estudiantes que han recibido su
Primera Comunión están invitados a estar en
la procesión con sus trajes y sus vestidos de
Primera Comunión. Por favor valla a la
escuela para ponerse en procesión.
MISA DE ANILLOS PARA LA ACADEMIA... es el
Viernes 9 de Mayo a las 12 del día. Todos
están invitados.
DÍA DE LAS MADRES... es la próxima semana,
el Domingo 11 de Mayo. Habrá una bendición
especial para las mamas y para las abuelitas
en todas las Misas. La sociedad del Santo
Nombre esta patrocinando un desayuno en el
auditorio después de la Misa de las 9 AM y
después de la Misa de 10:30 AM. Todos están
invitados.
PENTECOSTÉS... también es la próxima
semana, el Domingo 11 de Mayo. Todos los
feligreses--- hombres y mujeres--- jóvenes y
mayores de edad--- se les pide que vistan algo
rojo--- el color del Espíritu Santo---sombreros,

INSTITUTO GRACE está aceptando aplicaciones
para su - programa GRATIS de las habilidades
del negocio. Este programa de entrenamiento
de cuatro mese y medio enseña a mujeres las
habilidades necesitadas para tener éxito en el

Un espacio para una familia
(He 1:1214; 1 Pe 4:13-16; Jn 17: 1-11a)
Aunque nos persigan
A los que venimos de otros países, y a veces
incluso a quienes llevan más tiempo en este país
pero se dan cuenta de los rapidísimos cambios
de nuestra sociedad, a menudo nos chocan
algunas de las costumbres y valores que
encontramos. No querríamos que nuestros hijos
adoptasen esas costumbres, ni que perdiesen los
valores del respeto a la dignidad de toda
persona y vida humana, ni el sentido de la
hospitalidad y la generosidad en el compartir, ni
la honradez que nos gusta pensar son parte de
nuestra herencia hispana. Y sin embargo, basta
asomarse alas noticias de cada día o las novelas,
para ver hasta qué punto se da la mentira, la
manipulación, la corrupción política, la
ambición, la competitividad… ¿hasta qué punto
se nos cuelan ideas como es mi vida…” “yo soy
así…” “pues si me conviene este matrimonio
me quedo y si no, corto la relación y listo…”
“tengo que comprar esto o lo otro porque ya lo
tienen las vecinas…” “es mi cuerpo y tengo
derecho a hacer lo que quiera…” “total, sólo es
una mentirilla…” “ésta me la va a pagar…”
En los primeros tiempos del cristianismo se
perseguía
a
los
cristianos
activa
y
violentamente. Aún en nuestro día todavía
existe en algunos países la persecución contra
los cristianos. A nosotros quizá no nos parezca
que estamos siendo perseguidos, porque
físicamente no hay señales. Y sin embargo los
ataques contra los valores del evangelio se
propagan por todas partes. Lo mas peligroso es
que entran en nuestras casas mentes sin que
casi nos demás cuenta. Nos llevan a romper o
dañar la relación con Dios y con los demás casi
insensiblemente. Frente a todas estas cosas,
hoy se nos dice que no tengamos miedo de
confesar a Cristo—en medio de todas las
dificultades que existen para hacerlo—con
fidelidad a nuestra fe. Esto será lo que nos de
una verdadera alegría.
Para la reflexión
¿Qué me produce alegría? ¿Tiene algo que ver con
la venganza, con el pasar por encima de los demás
para alcanzar mis fines, con la falta de fidelidad,
con el comprar muchas cosas? ¿Qué busco para mi
o para mi familia?
Un joven párroco recientemente les dijo a sus
feligreses que una familia inmigrante había quedado
sin casa y necesitaba un lugar donde quedarse.
Consistía de una joven madre, el hijito y su esposo.
El sacerdote pedía que una familia de la comunidad
los acogiese.
“Quién esté dispuesto a recibir a esta familia en
su casa, por favor, levante la mano’. Nadie lo hizo.
Era una parroquia pobre y quizá la gente pensara
que no podían atender a más personas.
Después de un momento de silencio incomodo, el
sacerdote insistió, hasta que una familia se ofreció a
recibir los inmigrantes. El párroco los invitó a
acercarse al altar donde, para la sorpresa de todos,
les dio una bella talla de la Sagrada Familia. La
familia de acogida se emociono mucho y muchos en
la iglesia dijeron: “Si hubiéramos sabido que era esa
familia nos habríamos ofrecido”.
El sacerdote, que había hecho sus votos tres años
antes, probó ser muy sabio, dando una lección de
amor, la humildad, y la hospitalidad de Dios. Como
les dijo Pablo a los Romanos, el párroco pedía a sus
feligreses que “compartan sus posesiones con los
necesitados y abran su hogar a extraños”.
Al celebrar Pentecostés recordemos que el
Espíritu Santo hizo posible que gente de diversas
lenguas y culturas comprendieran el mensaje de
salvación y que todos pudieron llegar a un encuentro
personal con Cristo. Nadie quedó fuera por su
cultura, lengua, y origen. Y es el encuentro con
Cristo y el Espíritu que llama a todo cristiano a
recibir el inmigrante, el extranjero, y el refugiado
entre nosotros. El Evangelio nos llama a alimentar y
vestir a los pobres, cuidar de los enfermos y ayudar a
los necesitados. Pablo también nos dice que nuestro
amor mutuo debe ser completamente sincero. No es
suficiente con decir con decir que nos preocupa
alguien. Debemos mostrarlo con nuestras acciones.
Nuestra ayuda puede tomar muchas formas, desde el
proporcionar ayuda directamente a los inmigrantes
hasta contribuir y trabajar en programas
parroquiales y diocesanos que ayudan a los pobres y
enfermos. Los obispos de los Estados Unidos nos
urgen, como cristianos a caminar en solidaridad con
los inmigrantes y con los pobres, exigiendo respeto
por sus derechos humanos básicos: hemos de recibir
a los recién llegados a nuestra parroquias, escuelas,
y comunidad sin pensar en sus status, cultura u
origen, y recordar que muchos nos deseaban salir de
sus países y dejar sus familias, pero han tenido que
emigrar para escaparse de la miseria económica, la
persecución, la guerra y otras circunstancias
desesperadas.
Al recibir y ayudar a los necesitados, estamos
dando la bienvenida al Señor a nuestros corazones y
dando entrada al Espíritu Santo en nuestras vidas.
