Show us your face and we will be saved. Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being enslaved by money; the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happiness only in created things; made Peter weep after his betrayal, and assured Paradise to the repentant thief. Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman: “If you knew the gift of God!” You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy: let the Church be your visible face in the world, its Lord risen and glorified. You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in weakness in order that they may feel compassion for those in ignorance and error: let everyone who approaches them feel sought after, loved, and forgiven by God. Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind. We ask this of you, Lord Jesus, through the intercession of Mary, Mother of Mercy; you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. Amen. Su amigo y servidor ~ Padre Jesús Camacho On Nov. 21, the Church celebrates the Presentation of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary in the Temple. Remember the dedication, in the year 543, of the Church of Holy Mary the New, constructed near the temple in Jerusalem. We celebrate, then, together with Christians of the Eastern Church, the “dedication” that Mary made herself to God. In accordance with the tradition of the Eastern Church, when Mary was three years told, her parents took her to the Temple in order to consecrate her to the Lord’s service. Tradition also has it that Saints John and Anne invited the little girls of the city so that they could be in front of the child Mary with lit torches. Sacred Scripture does not speak of this. Historical precedents of this feast are provided in the Apocryphal books, principally the “Protogospel of James” (chapter 4). Since the 8th century it has been celebrated in the East as a feast day, under the name of “The Entrance of the Holy Mother of God into the Temple”. It was introduced in the West (Rome) in 1371. Pope Sixtus IV extended the celebration throughout the entire universal Church in the year 1472. Pope Paul VI, in his Encyclical, Marialis Cultis (1974) tells us this feast “despite its apocryphal content, presents high values and examples, and transmits venerable traditions that had their origin in the Eastern Churches” (#8). Finally, this is also a Hispanic tradition. Once a child reaches three years of age, the parents present him or her before the Church. They ask the Lord to bless the child and consecrate him or her to Mary's loving care. A ritual exists for this ceremony. Here in our parish, we celebrate this tradition almost every week. You may stop by my office to view some photos of this ceremony. Your friend and servant ~ Fr.
