3rd Sunday of Advent
Year of Mercy
This past Tuesday, December 8, we began the Jubilee Year of Mercy. A Jubilee Year is a special year of rejoicing and celebrating, and in particular this year we are to rejoice and celebrate the tremendous mercy of God. During this Year of Mercy we are
called to learn about mercy, personally experience mercy and most importantly, share mercy. God’s mercy is seen in the incarnation,
that God would choose to become human and walk with us is remarkable. Are we willing to lower ourselves and walk with another
who is broken, confused, lost and in need? This is what God did in the incarnation. Jesus came down to our level, comforting the
broken, illuminating the doubtful, seeking out the lost and reaching out to the needy. This is what our Pope has asked us to recall
during this Year of Mercy. When we practice the Spiritual and Corporal Works of Mercy we make real (incarnate) the saving mercy
of God. Our mission as church has never been primarily inward, but primarily outward. We are challenged by Pope Francis to go out
and to become a walking ―field hospital.‖
As the doors open for this Year of Mercy, let us open ourselves to others, sharing with them the tremendous mercy of God.
Advent is a joyful time of preparation, and on this “Guadate Sunday” (Joyful Sunday) may we joyfully share God’s love and mercy,
inviting friends and family to ―Come Home for Christmas,‖ for a God of mercy awaits with open arms. Blessings. Fr. Tom
Penance Services: 7:30pm: Fr. Serra = Thurs., Dec. 17. Sacred Heart = Tues., Dec. 22. St. Mary’s Palmdale = Wed., Dec. 23
Second Collection – Today we will have a second collection which benefits the Retirement Fund for Religious. This appeal asks us
to recall those men and women religious whose ministry nourished our faith, served our church, and strengthened our nation. Today, more than 37,000 women and men religious are now past age 70 and their institutions struggle daily with the spiraling
costs of health care. Please give generously.
Christmas Poinsettias – You are invited to donate potted poinsettias in honor of family members or friends living or deceased. These poinsettias will be used to decorate our Church at Christmas. Please bring them to the Church on December 21, 22
and 23. Also, please place the names of your loved ones on a piece of paper and tape it to the pot. They will be remembered in the
Christmas Masses in our Church.
¿Estamos dispuestos a disminuir

A Night in Bethlehem
Families went back in time to ancient Bethlehem on December 5th when the Office of Religious Education hosted, ―A Night in Bethlehem‖ . They were able to experience the tastes, sights and smells of daily life
when Jesus was born. There were opportunities to learn tapestry, crush grapes with your bare feet, shepherd
the animals, visit Mary and Joseph and much more. The busy Bethlehem marketplace was a memorable family experience. Thanks to all see you next year!

In the Spotlight
The Meaning of the Advent Wreath
The circular shape of the wreath, without beginning or end, symbolizes God’s complete and unending love for us—a love that sent his
Son into the world to redeem us from the curse of sin. It also represents
eternal life which becomes ours through faith in Jesus Christ.
 The 1st Sunday of Advent symbolizes Hope with the ―Prophet’s
Candle‖ reminding us that Jesus is coming.
 The 2nd Sunday of Advent symbolizes Faith with the ―Bethlehem
Candle‖ reminding us of Mary and Joseph’s journey to Bethlehem.
 The 3rd Sunday of Advent symbolizes Joy with the ―Shepherd’s
Candle‖ reminding us of the Joy the world experienced at the coming
birth of Jesus.
 The 4th Sunday of Advent symbolizes Peace with the ―Angel’s
Candle‖ reminding us of the message of the angels: ―Peace on Earth,
Good Will Toward Men.‖
