Pastors Corner Jan. 17, 2016 Page 2 Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Actions Speak Louder Than Words In the Gospel today we hear the story of the wedding feast at Cana. At this wedding feast Jesus performed his first miracle, and this miracle was prompted by the request of his mother. Mary continues to be an example for all of us. Not only should we request things from Jesus, we can turn to Mary and ask her to intercede for us. She reminds us to "do whatever he tells you." Doing what God asks isn't always easy, but it is the source of salvation and brings hope to the world. Jesus began his ministry with the word "COME" when he selected apostles to come and follow him. The final request he made to his followers was to "GO" and proclaim the good news. As disciples who have been called to COME and follow Jesus, are we GOING to proclaim his message and share his mercy? Mary reminds us to "do whatever he tells you." Remember, actions speak louder than words. May we each use our gifts, talents and treasure for the building of God's kingdom and for the betterment of our world. Through the intercession of Mary may our actions reflect our faith and bring hope and mercy to the world. Peace. Fr. Tom Together In Mission – The mailing for the 2016 Together in Mission Campaign has begun. This Campaign assists needy parishes and schools in our Archdiocese (37 parishes and 56 Catholic schools). These funds help maintain a meaningful Catholic presence in some of the most impoverished areas of our Archdiocese. Having been a pastor for over 8 years in a parish that received financial assistance through this program, Fr. Tom knows first-hand how vital this campaign is. Please make some commitment for this Campaign. Additional information is in the back of the Church. Thank you. Welcome Fr. Parker Sandoval – Fr. Parker returns to Sacred Heart this weekend to address the Together in Mission Appeal. Since he is living in the inner city, he can share first-hand the needs and how vital is our support. The Happenings Jan. 17, 2016 Page 3 Second Sunday in Ordinary Time It Could be Yours! In the Spotlight The Spirituality of a Minister Tina Halamicek As I am making my Spiritual journey through this Year of Mercy, I am discovering that it’s not important to be busy, doing and fulfilling many things throughout the day as it is more important to be Christ to others. As I was sitting in Church before Mass one day, I was so strongly driven to get out of my seat and walk over to the Tabernacle room. As I entered the room, there was a lady sitting in the pew, who I had never seen before. I smiled at her, she smiled back at me and I introduced myself to her, told her my name, and welcomed her to our church. She was a bit startled at this, however, she responded by saying thank you and had an even bigger smile on her face as I began to turn and walk away. For me, my heart was filled with joy at the smallest thing I did with great love. This was Mother Theresa’s mantra, “Do Small Things with Great Love.” This is how I love my church, my faith, my community. As a Sacristan Coordinator, Gift Shop Coordinator, and volunteer at our Church, my day can get very hectic and I can easily be distracted by the doing of things rather than doing things that will make those that come to our church feel welcomed and loved. My prayer is that we can grow to understand that the heart of all our ministry is to express our love and charity to others here at Sacred Heart Church during this Year of Mercy. Our Parish Family Perpetual Adoration Our Lord is waiting for your visit. Blessings on all who visit to adore Him. ADORERS are needed for the following hours: MON. 1:00AM – 2:00 AM 11:00AM – 12:00 PM WED. 2:00AM – 3:00 AM 2:00PM – 1:00 PM THURS. 2:00AM – 3:00 AM If you can serve, please call Jessica at 948-4604. Thank You. Quote from Pope Francis In the Gospel the essential thing is mercy…Jesus says this clearly, summarizing his teaching for the disciples: “be merciful, even as your Father is merciful” (Luke 6:36). Can there be a Christian who isn’t merciful? No. A Christian must necessarily be merciful, because this is the center of the Gospel. (General Audience, St. Peter’s Square, Sept. 10, 2014) Lay Fraternity of Charles de Foucauld The Lay Fraternity of Charles de Foucauld will have its first monthly meeting on Sunday, January 17th at 2:00 p.m. We will meet at the facilitator’s home for Scripture Sharing/ Review of Life followed by Eucharistic Adoration (at the church) and dinner. For details, contact Arlene Moeller at [email protected] or call (661) 361-4096. Calendar Sales 2016 Sacred Heart Catholic Calendars in English and Spanish will be sold for $3 after all Masses. The proceeds go to support Youth Ministry. Page 6 Ushers and Greeters Needed A warm welcome greatly enhanc- es worship and community even before the Mass begins. For newcomers, it is the first impression that people have about how friendly our church body truly is. The simple message that they provide is: "all are welcome in the presence of God's people!" Greeters welcome the parishioners as they enter Mass and the Ushers give assistance during the worship service. It would imply coming 20 minutes before Mass begins in order to serve. If you are interested in volunteering please call (661) 202-0995, or even talk to an usher or greeter after any of the Masses to inquire. Thank you!
