of the Holiday season it is
easy to get caught up in the
stress of money being tight,
energy costs skyrocketing,
and the increased temptation to attend multiple holiday parties. Instead, take

the artistic passion of past

Southwest Detroit. There
are numerous treasures in
the community, its people,
its products, its businesses,
its buildings, and most
importantly its history. The
area is home to the richest
stories of the growth of
Detroit, and the proof is in
the structures the golden
era left behind.

Arts(COMPÁS), for his outstanding leadership in the
creation of our community’s
wonderful arts and cultural
center.
Duran joined COMPÁS
in the spring of 2007 to support a fledging consortium of
five community based performing arts entities, including La Chispa(Flamenco
performance), the Godboldo
Institute(Modern Dance),
Heritage Works(African
Dance and Drumming),
Living Arts(Ballet and modern dance)and Teatro
Mosaico(the Hispanic program of Mosaic Theater).
Under his guidance, the
founders created a program
of classes that have grown
out of the Latino culture,
complemented by diverse
offerings from Detroit’s

One Ever Knows"
"The Quiet Things that No One Ever
Knows" is a collection of photographs by
Juan Carlos Perez that exposes some of
the common problems faced today by society: people living with a certain death of
spirit and purpose.
According to Juan Carlos, these
issues are not addressed as they should
be in order to have a positive effect in the
lives of the people that are involved. The
goal of the collection is to create awareness.
Juan Carlos Perez is a Michigan
grown immigrant from Guadalajara,
Mexico. He developed a passion for capturing beauty and essence from his mother & role-model.
The photo exhibit will be on display through Feb. 24, 2012 at The
Atrium Project Space, which is located at the Southwest Detroit Business
Association offices, 7752 West
Vernor, Detroit, Michigan 48209.

West Vernor and was built in 1921 and at one time was
considered the largest Roman Catholic Church in the
United States. It is rumored to be a 1/3 replica of a Roman
Basilica. Its enormity and great design detail make the
Church a community icon, and attraction regardless of one’s
faith.
Ste. Anne’s Parish on St. Anne Street is home to the
remains of Father Gabriel Richard, one of the City’s greatest advocates. It is also the 2nd longest continuously run
Catholic Parish in the United States. Founded in 1701, the
Ste. Anne congregation has overcome several obstacles
including the complete destruction of seven previous church
buildings until 1886, when the current structure was built.
It is built in the French Gothic Style with incredible spires.
Decorated in total grandeur for the Holidays, the
churches are a place to enjoy complete beauty at no cost.
Dozens of trees adorn the altars, and the light coming in
from the numerous stained glass windows cast a rainbow
hue on the sculptures and paintings. They are like walking
into an art museum, but the beautiful thing is they are sitting right in our backyard.
