Magglio Ordóñez Visits Holy Redeemer to
Announce his Family Scholarship Foundation

2008, The Southwest Detroit
Business Association (SDBA)
welcomed hundreds of excited little league softball players, young Tiger fans and
their parents as they crowded into the community center
room at Holy Redeemer
Church to get a glimpse of
Magglio Ordóñez. The Tiger
baseball star was there to
announce the establishment
of a college scholarship for a
deserving southwest Detroit
high school senior.
Established by Ordóñez and
his family and the Detroit
Tigers Foundation, it is a
permanent scholarship program of the Community
Foundation for Southeast
Michigan.

Ordóñez.
“We’re thrilled to have
the Tigers involved in our

such an interest in their welfare. This is just the beginning of a lasting relationship,
and SDBA is happy to facilitate this new partnership
with the Tigers Foundation.”

The West Vernor &
Springwells Voluntary
Business Improvement
District (BID) operates on a
daily basis to ensure that our
commercial corridor remains
the cleanest, safest, and most
walkable shopping and dining district in Detroit.
Debris is swept Monday
through Friday from the two
miles of sidewalks and curbsides. Sixty-six litter baskets
are routinely maintained by
the Clean Team. Graffiti
removal will increase as the
weather begins to average 40
degrees, allowing paint to set
properly.
Scheduled for late summer 2008, the Voluntary BID
will transition to the BIZ- the
first official Business
Improvement Zone in the
State of Michigan. Though
the true transition will begin
in the summer of 2008, the
recently-formed BIZ Board is
hard at work drafting bylaws, developing strategies
for an efficient transition,
and dedicating itself to the
expansion of services within
the BIZ boundaries. The
Board is comprised of 14
property and business owners and one mayoral
appointee.

Vernor is a very lively place these
days since COMPÁS, the Center of
Music and Performing Arts –
Southwest has doubled its enrollment! In view of its success, the
organization has appointed Ismael
Durán Galfano as its new director.
“We could not have found a better person to take this position,” said
Kathy Wendler, president of
Southwest Detroit Business
Association, the sponsoring organization for COMPÁS. “His arts experience, along with his knowledge of
Latino arts and a passion for this
area are a perfect fit.”
Durán has been a fixture in
Southwest Detroit for many years
where he has taught music at César
Chávez Academy Elementary School,
held positions as Community
Coordinator at Bagley Housing and
Director of Holy Redeemer’s
Cultural Center where he oversaw
dance and music classes. A native
of Chile, he attended the
Universidad Técnica del
Estado/School of Arts and Crafts in
Santiago and studied at the Alliance
Française in Paris, France.
Durán said there are still openings for some of the classes including
Flamenco, Tango, Samba, Capoeira,
Mexican Folkloric and African
