A Message from our Pastor On the evening of the opening performance of Les Misérables by the Upper Room Theatre Ministry, I prayed Evening Prayer from the Liturgy of the Hours. One of the intercessions was The talents of artist reflect your splendor, may their work give the world hope and joy. As I write this, the last of seven performances of Les Misérables has helped me to see the truth of that prayer of petition. Artists reflect the splendor of God, and the story that they tell gives many hope and joy. We can describe the show that so many saw as amazing, marvelous, and tremendous. Yet words do not suffice to describe how God has given talents to so many people who were involved in this production and how they so generously used them on behalf of others. Thank you to all who participated in Les Miserables. Special thanks go to Rob Tessier (Director/Producer), Cathy Drummond (Music Director / Orchestra Director), Chris Zavadowski (Music Director / Vocal Director), Vickie Taylor (Choreographer), Christine Laird (Assistant Director), John Sledz (Technical Director / Set Director), Andrew Heller (Asst. Technical Director / Lighting Director), Dale Walsh (Asst. Technical Director / Sound Director), Kelsey Kleb (Costume Director), Jay Wells (Properties Master), Bernadette Wunderly (Scenic Art Director), Dan Martin (Lighting Designer), Kyna Hollis (Make-Up / Hair Designer), MJ Madrigal (Deck Stage Manager), Laetetia Bergeron (Facade Designer), Audrey Peretta (Assistant Props Manager), Clare Starrs (Assistant Stage Manager), Monica Loesel (Asst, Scenic Art), Teresa Elmore (Asst. Choreographer), DJ Drummond (Co-Sound Designer), Cathy Sledz (General Manager / Ticket Sales Director), Chris Zavadowski (Marketing Director), Janis DeVore (Publicity Director), Jane Carroll and Veronica Rollins (House Managers), Myra Hayde (Concessions Director), Matt Moore (Video Production), Joan Lopacki (Program Designer), and Rich Zavadowski (Assistant to the General Manager). Thank you to the Set Crew, Costume Crew, Scenic Art Crew, Stage Crew, and Rehearsal Accompanists. To the Cast and Orchestra, “Thank you.” The proceeds from this ministry support our Youth Ministry programs. To all, thank you for bringing “hope and joy.” This was the work of many people’s hearts and hands to bring this performance about. What wonderful talents so many people shared, so that people’s spirits could be uplifted by this story of Jean Valjean and kindred spirits in 19th century France. Thanks also to Fr. Bob Cilinski who returned in his special role as the Archbishop. Today’s Gospel continues with the parables of the Kingdom. Parables “stretch” our way of thinking to understand some aspect of life as God wills it for us. Last Sunday’s parables were the weeds among the wheat, the mustard seed, and the yeast and the dough. Today’s parables are the treasure in the field, the merchant in search of pearls, the dragnet thrown into the sea, and the head of the household who brings both the new and the old from his storeroom. All of these parables challenge us to think about how we shape our lives and what our ultimate values are. Has any event or decision in your life these past two weeks been affected by your having heard these parables? Perhaps the test of whether these parables are touching our lives is when they make us think about a phrase we pray in the Lord’s Prayer, “Thy kingdom come.” Father Lee Roos Question of the Week: In a world divided by economics and education, by social status and political opinions, even sadly by race and religion, what can I do this week to bring people together?
