Second Sunday of Lent
March 4, 2012
“ If God is for us, who can be
against us?”
- Romans 8:31b
HISTORY OF SALVATION
The first reading today continues the “history of salvation” narrative that we hear throughout Lent this year. Today’s story was
among the best-loved in the Jewish tradition (surely Joseph told the story to young Jesus as he formed him in the ways of their
faith); the early fathers of the Church were very fond of it as a means of explaining the sacrifice of Christ on the cross. The overall
tone of the first reading, psalm, and second reading seems a little incongruous with the dazzling Gospel, until we remember that the
Transfiguration was placed as the Gospel for this Sunday precisely to remind us of the glory that awaits those who live faithfully and
obediently to the will of God. In the life of Jesus, it is a preview of the glory of his resurrection; for us it is a glimpse of the destiny
of those who continue, as we heard in last week’s Gospel, to repent and believe in the Good News.
RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS
In Lent, the RCIA participants move into the final period of
preparation for receiving the sacraments. During this time,
God pours purifying and enlightening graces upon them
through the spiritual preparation they receive in RCIA sessions,
the special Rites that mark each of the Sundays in Lent and the
prayers offered for them by the faithful. The Rites are inserted
in the Liturgy at the 10 am Mass. On the 2nd Sunday of Lent
the Church provides a Penitential Rite for the baptized Christians seeking full communion with the Catholic Church. This
Rite helps the candidate prepare for the healing sacrament of
Reconciliation. It calls the candidate to a deeper repentance
and total abandonment to the mercy of God the Father who
sent his son to die for our sins. Our prayer for the candidates,
and for ourselves, is that Jesus will transfigure our lives with
his redeeming grace bringing us to conversion - a genuine desire to be holy as he is holy.
“GO FORTH AND BEAR FRUIT THAT WILL LAST . . .”
2012 DIOCESAN SERVICES FUND
God bless each of you who have so generously responded
in support of the 2012 Diocesan Services Fund. If you have
heard Christ’s call and have not yet responded, please do so
today. To give online, please visit archgh.org/dsf/Donate. Help
us attain our parish goal of $65,000.00!
Guidelines For Lenten Observance
Good Friday - is day of fast and abstinence.
Fridays during Lent - are days of abstinence.
Fasting - binds all persons who have completed their 18th
birthday through those who have completed their 59th year,
unless prevented by poor health. On days of fast, one full meal
is allowed. Two other meals sufficient to maintain strength,
may be taken according to one’s own needs. Eating between
meals is not allowed although fluids may be taken.
Abstinence - binds all persons who have completed their 14th
birthday, unless prevented by poor health. On days of abstinence, the consumption of meat is not allowed. The Church
strongly encourages the observance of Friday abstinence, but
failure to do so is not regarded as sinful.

2012-2013 REGISTRATION - Holy Ghost School is now
accepting new students for the 2012-2013 school year. It is
important if you want tuition assistance to do this now. Tuition
assistance will not be offered after March 30 for the next
school year. It is my hope that we can continue to grow the
school here at Holy Ghost. Catholic schools offer a lot to a
person’s growth and I strongly recommend our school. We
have so many children in our parish that can really be helped
by our school. Please enroll now.
We want to thank all those who offered contributions for the
Steps for Students run. Unfortunately, the race was cancelled
due to the weather. Your contributions will be used wisely.

Segundo Domingo de
Cuaresma
4 de Marzo, 2012
“Si Dios está a nuestro favor,
quién estará en contra nuestra”
- Romanos 8:31b
