32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time - Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church
Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Parish San Clemente, California A Eucharistic Community Living The Good News Daily November 7, 2010 32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time PARACHUTE PACKERS C harles Plumb was a U. S. Navy jet pilot in Vietnam. He flew seventyfive combat missions before his plane was destroyed by a surfaceto-air missile. Plumb safely ejected and parachuted into enemy territory. He was captured and spent six years in a Communist prison before his release and return to the United States. One day, when Plumb and his wife were having a meal in a restaurant, a man came up to their table and said, “You’re Plumb! You flew jet fighters in Vietnam from the aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk. You were Charles Plumb shot down!” “How in the world did you know that?” asked Plumb. “I packed your parachute,” the man replied. Plumb gasped in surprise and gratitude. The man pumped his hand and said, “I guess it worked!” Plumb assured him, “It sure did. If your chute hadn’t worked, I wouldn’t be here today.” Plumb couldn’t sleep that night, thinking about that man. “I kept wondering how many times I might have seen him and not even said ‘Good morning, how are you?’ because I was a fighter pilot and he was just a sailor.” Plumb thought of the countless hours the man had spent below decks standing at a long table, carefully weaving the shrouds and folding the silks of each parachute, holding in his hands the fate of someone he didn’t know. So, who’s packing your parachute? Like Charles Plumb, everyone has someone who provides what they need to make it through the day: a physical parachute, mental parachute, emotional parachute, or spiritual parachute. Let us remember to say hello, please, or thank you, to congratulate someone on something wonderful that has happened to them, give a compliment, or just do something good in return. November 7, 2010 Respond with Gratitude 2011 Offertory Commitment Our annual offertory commitment for 2011 will take place on Sunday, November 21, the Feast of Christ the King. This weekend we have the opportunity to hear the experiences of parishioners whose grateful lives are helping to build a dynamic Catholic community right here at OLF. Offertory commitment cards will be mailed to parish households this coming week. Please begin now to prayerfully consider how you will faithfully share your gifts so our parish may continue to be a visible sign of God’s kingdom here in San Clemente. A Veteran’s Day invitation Our Lady of Fatima Parish School cordially invites you to attend their Veteran's Day Prayer Service on Thursday, November 11 at 8:00 a.m. with special guests from the Camp Pendleton USMC battalion of 2/4. They will provide our color guard. We hope you will be able to join our school for this wonderful tradition at OLF. All active and retired members of the military are invited to join the gathering in uniform. Thanksgiving Eve Mass will be celebrated in our parish on Wednesday, November 24 at 7:00 p.m. 32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time 3 From our Pastor, Fr. Jack Sewell “Since you have accepted Christ Jesus as Lord, live in union with him. Keep your roots deep in him, build your lives on him, and become ever stronger in your faith, as you were taught.” (Colossians 2:6) T he image of vines, trees, and seeds are powerful images of the Kingdom of God that Jesus used throughout his ministry. St. Paul would naturally continue to emphasize this rich symbolism, using in this passage the idea of roots. While not many of us are farmers, and perhaps not much experience as gardeners, we can still appreciate the important of having deep roots. It provides the nourishment that the tree needs to grow. Roots are the foundation of the tree, so much so that trees can grow to hundreds of feet in height and tens of feet in width and yet be stable and secure because of their root system. This is precisely the point that Paul makes. We build our lives on the foundation of Christ. We are strengthened in our service to God and to our brothers and sisters through the power of faith. All this takes place because we have accepted Jesus. We have heard him call us by name to walk in his light. We have responded as disciples in faith. The words of Scripture that we hear at every Mass continue to teach us as Jesus taught his disciples. His listeners repeated his stories, memorized his teachings, and passed on the images of what he did. These stories and memories were written down so that every generation could experience what the first generation saw face to face—the revelation of God’s grace in Jesus. Now we are called to live in union with him. From the Beatitudes to the Great Commission, we pattern our lives on the life of the Son of God. May we grow ever stronger in faith at Our Lady of Fatima Parish in discipleship and mission. K of C Pancake Breakfast Next Sunday, November 14, the Knights of Columbus are holding their FABULOUS Pancake Breakfast, featuring pancakes, fruit topping, scrambled eggs, sausages, yogurt and beverages. This is probably the LAST Pancake Breakfast in our current hall! Come to the Parish Hall after the 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. Masses, before the 11 a.m. Mass for food, friendship, and fraternity. 4 Welcome to Our Lady of Fatima Parish Changing Seasons A five-week workshop just for women. Are you experiencing any of the following life events? Children going off to college (or kindergarten) Job change or loss Going back to school Relocation or deployment Divorce Remarriage Loss of a loved one Would you like the opportunity to share your experiences with and learn from other women? A five-week women’s group is now forming at Our Lady of Fatima Parish to explore those issues which affect women’s lives. We are all created in God’s image and our relationships with one another are how we find our way to God. Five Mondays November 22 through December 20 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Our Lady of Fatima Parish, Modular Building Room 8 Facilitated by: Terri O’Grady Herschman, Licensed Clinical Social Worker and OLF parishioner Robin Margraf, M.A. Pastoral Theology and OLF staff member Cost: $100 (some scholarships available) For more info, contact Terri at 949-551-2222 or [email protected] THE BUILDING BLOCK CONSTRUCTION UPDATE GENERAL CONTRACTORS ABOUND! For the last two weeks the seven general contractors who are bidding on our new hall have been visiting OLF with numerous subcontractors to evaluate the scope of work. They continue to take measurements, and to assess the site for everything from soil to slope to car and pedestrian traffic throughout a normal day. All of these aspects, along with many more particular issues, are a part of their determination for the two major parts of their bid: cost and time. The cost analysis that we did in 2008 came in at $7.1 million. The cost analysis that was completed in April, 2010 came in at $5.2 million. The construction time is 10-16 months. It is up to these contractors to determine their actual cost and time line, present it to the Diocese and to OLF, and then we will select the general contractor. We will meet at the Diocesan Construction Office on November 11th to open the bids and narrow the field. Final selection will be made on November 16th. “Are you not aware that you are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?” (1 Corinthians 3:16). Lord, as we build new facilities, may they be places where we grow as your temple of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Altar server training Training for NEW altar servers will take place in the church THIS Saturday, November 13th from 9:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. This important role is open to those who have received First Eucharist and are in 4th grade or above. Applications will be available at the training session or you can request one by e-mail by contacting Chris or Lilta Shultz at [email protected] Comprehensive training including handbooks will be provided. It is recommended that a parent and/or guardian attend with the server(s). Lector Position Open If you have a voice to speak, a love of God, and a willingness to give of your talent to the community, do we have a deal for you! We will be happy to train you to use your voice to proclaim the Word at Mass. We have recently lost some of our lectors through sickness or relocation to some other lucky parish and are in need of replacements. We especially have immediate need (you would start in January next year) for lectors at the Sat. & Sun. evening Masses. TEENS: you can qualify as a lector as long as you have received the sacrament of confirmation, or are in the confirmation program with Patti Lynn. Be happy to answer your questions about becoming a lector at OLF, just call Ray Lynn at 369-6525 any time. November 7, 2010 32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time 5 "FAQ: Fatima Asks Questions" Q: My son attended Monday’s Faith Forum, then came home and said “Mom, at church they said that I can form my conscience and decide for myself what’s right and wrong.” Is this what he was told, really? A: (Disclaimer: Sometimes these questions are fabricated, in the hope that the answer will be of interest to readers. This is one of those times.) You can read about Conscience Formation in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, starting with paragraph 1776. This is a rigorous and beautiful pursuit that allows not so much “deciding for oneself” as entering into a deeper sense of the will of God and then willingly living our life according to the teachings of Christ and the Church. The formation of an adult conscience requires several steps and components. These include at least a nominal understanding of the Bible’s input on the subject under discernment, a consultation on the Church’s teaching (the Catechism is a good source for this; there are others), and more. The Catechism lists five additional components of this process: Experience, Signs of the Times, the Virtue of Prudence, the Advice of Competent People, and the Help of the Holy Spirit (prayer). Teens do not have the capacity, regardless of their other intelligence, maturity, or other talents, to accomplish the task of conscience formation on their own. The Advice of Competent People is the key, for teens. In this context, “competent people” does NOT mean other teens. It means parents, priest, trusted adult friend, etc. It might even mean the author of this answer, who offers this advice to teens: Teens, if you find that you are dealing with an issue of conscience – deciding what is right or wrong – and you are doing it alone, or with the help of other teens and no one else …. You’re NOT doing conscience formation. Stop! Seek advice. In any real conscience formation experience, you will be able and willing to talk to your parents or other trustworthy adult advisor in order to support you in this critical process. This is a great opportunity to build your own confidence and ability to make good decisions, as well as to build trust with parents and other important adults in your life. The Church is our community of faith. Within it, and in prayer and reflection on the Word of God, we can find great support for knowing and living a moral life of happiness, fulfillment, and hope. Only by trusting in God’s Word and the support of other people of faith do we find this path in our life. Don’t miss out! Counting the days… Advent begins in just three weeks. With all the preparations for Thanksgiving Day, it’s easy for the season of Advent to sneak up on us. Yet, this time of preparation is important. It’s a time for us to get ready to more fully celebrate God who came to us as one of us and who continues to be present to us. Here are two ways your parish would like to help you and your loved ones prepare for the birth of our Lord. Advent Wreath Gathering & Blessing On Sunday, November 28, we will light the first of four candles on our parish Advent wreath. At 10am, parish families are invited to assemble their own Advent wreaths to take home and continue the celebration of the season. All materials including candle will be available here at church. The gathering will conclude with a blessing of the wreaths. This is for EVERYONE!! Families with children, couples, singles etc. Six children are needed to participate in the blessing ritual. Contact Caylin Wade at [email protected] if you would like to volunteer. Suggested wreath donation: $5 Prepare for Christmas in just six minutes a day The "Little Blue Book" for the season of Advent will be available for every parish household on the weekend of November 27 & 28, the First Sunday of Advent. Offering a brief daily prayer and reflection for each day of Advent, this book is one in the very popular series of "Little Books" from the Diocese of Saginaw, Michigan. It's simple, yet engaging, and will help you pray scripture and learn more about Catholic traditions, practices, and customs. The book is yours to take and keep; if you'd like to defray its cost, the suggested donation is $1 per copy. Donations will not be collected separately. Kindly add it to your regular Sunday offering. 6 Welcome to Our Lady of Fatima Parish PASTORAL STAFF Weekly Offertory Report October 31, 2010 Basket Office Phone: 492-4101 Pastor, Fr. Copyright © 2009, World Library Publications.
