We keep having to relearn how prodigal God is. It is as if God cannot quite manage to say no. We think it is surely fine
when God is prodigal with us—rich in mercy and forgiveness, generous in grace. But what about the other—the enemy, the
sinner, the heretic, the outsider? Well, we expect God to be as stingy with that person as we are.
Moses and Joshua wanted such a cozy world, too. They wondered how the spirit of God could be given to the two who did not
show up at the meeting tent—today’s church. And the apostles in the Gospel complained because there were some miracle
workers who were clearly not followers of Jesus. God’s great free-wheeling generosity confounded them all. Let this be, says
Jesus. Just see to it that you who lead continue to be worthy of your calling.

St. James warns in today’s second reading that
those who hoard their wealth and live only for
themselves will be condemned. But in the Gospel,
Jesus assures us that all who give of themselves
for His sake will be rewarded.
Next week’s second collection is for the support of the PLC.

CHRIST RENEWS
HIS PARISH RETREAT
Do you have a personal relationship with
Jesus? Do you wonder sometimes what
that even means? Do you wish you could
find some way to deepen and enrich your
spiritual and prayer life, and come to understand more fully
and commit more deeply to our beloved Catholic faith? What if
there were a group of people who felt just like you, and who
were preparing to embark on a weekend long journey toward
just those things? Would you want to join them?
If your answer is “yes”, then you should plan to join your
fellow parishioners at the CRHP (Christ Renews His Parish)
retreats being hosted right here at St. Mary this October, in the
Parish Life Center. The men’s retreat will be the weekend
of Oct. 3-4, and the women’s weekend will be Oct. 17-18 and
it’s at no cost to you! Sign-up forms are available in the parish
office, or you can register online at the St. Mary website,
http://www.saintmarychurchfwb.org/christ-renews-his-parish
If you have any questions, e-mail us
at: [email protected] or check out our Facebook
page, CHRP of St. Mary Catholic Church. The CRHP retreats
focus on personal renewal, building discipleship and fellowship, and growing as a spiritual community. Come grow with
us.
