Good stewards must not argue who is the most
important. Today’s Gospel says clearly that those who
aspire to greatness must humbly serve the needs of all.
Even Jesus came not to be served, but to serve.
God’s work of salvation is the focus of this weekend’s
readings. From the prophetic event of Isaiah to Jesus’
understanding of the human condition in Hebrews,
concluding with Jesus paying our ransom in Mark, God is
in control. There may be failings and misunderstandings
along the way. We may move away from God, but at our
conversion, God leads us back. Like James and John, we
may let greed and power blur our vision of what Jesus
wants us to know about the Kingdom; but tirelessly we are
taught and re-taught what life in the Kingdom will be.
Jesus has paid our ransom to ensure that we will share in
the Kingdom. It is not unusual to think of Jesus’ ransom
as a punishment that he endured. However, it is more
accurate, and more like Jesus, for us to recognize ransom
as God’s gift to us.

St. Mary Parish along with Bishop Parkes takes
this opportunity to bring attention to the
splendid work and mission of the Diocesan
Council of Catholic Women. The DCCW has
been an important witness of faith and charity
in our diocese since its inception. We will
celebrate their wonderful achievements by recognizing them in
a special way as we observe the month of October 2015 as
Council of Catholic Women Month.
May the women of our diocese be united in purpose, direction
and action in religious, educational, legislative, social and
economic fields to meet the needs of the times.

Catholic in America is a weekly program
about the Catholic faith and current issues
which reaches about 30,000 people, many
of whom are not Catholic. This program is
an effective evangelization tool for our
Diocese. One of the priorities of our
diocesan vision, The Church Fully Alive, is Inviting Others to the
Faith. Your donations to this program will help allow Catholic
in America to spread the good news about our Catholic faith
and our diocese to many in the area.
Catholic in America can be watched Sundays at 11:00am on
WJTC, channel 44 and at 12:00pm on WMBB channel 13.
