Important Information about Religious
Education & Sacramental Preparation
Just a reminder, If your child will be making a
sacrament soon, he/she must complete ONE FULL
YEAR of formal religious education, even
BEFORE sacramental preparation can begin.
For example, if your child is 6 and you would like
them to make their First Holy Communion at 7/8
years old or second grade, they must attend religious
education classes starting in first grade. Sacramental
preparation of First Reconciliation and First Holy
Communion begins in January of second grade, with
the children making their First Reconciliation that
March culminating with their First Holy Communion
in May.
This applies to Confirmation as well, but the
sacramental preparation lasts for TWO years starting
in 8th grade. Please be mindful of these timelines.
If your child(ren) are not attending Catholic
school, they should be attending religious education
every year just like regular school so they can prepare
for the sacraments, in addition to learning about their
Catholic faith.
There are registration forms on the website
(www.nativitybrockport.org) a nd a t the
Parish Office. Please fill them out and return to the
Parish Office as soon as possible along with our
modest tuition. Classes are now forming, and start
Sunday, September 18. The Parish Office is open
from 9 am-4 pm weekdays. If mailing is easier, please
do so promptly, but give us a call to let us know it is
on its way.
If you have any questions concerning this policy or
about religious education in general, please contact
Connie Mesiti, Coordinator, at 637-4500.
September 4, 2016
as
scheduled
on
Sunday,
September 11.
The Catholic Daughters of the Americas
Nativity Court will hold their September
meeting on the 8th at 6 pm at The
Protectives on West Avenue. Please bring a
dish to pass. New members welcome!
At the conclusion of today’s gospel, we hear Jesus
tell a “great crowd” that “…anyone of you who
does not renounce all his possessions cannot be
my disciple.” A few of Jesus’ immediate disciples,
such as Peter, John and James, did just that: They
responded to Jesus’ call, renouncing everything to
follow him. How do modern disciples of Jesus
respond when confronted with this apparently
harsh command of Jesus? Surely the renunciation
of possessions need not mean literally giving all
one’s possessions away, does it? Questions we
might ponder this week though: Do our
possessions keep us from encountering Christ at
Mass? Do they distract us from our parish family?
Do our possessions interfere with our
relationships? Do they make us insensitive to
those less fortunate?

Fr. Joe’s Week: Last Th ur sday Fr . McK enna
and I went to Applebee’s in Pittsford for lunch and
then to see Kubo and the Two Strings. The film is
very highly rated but I didn’t get it. Fell asleep,
although that’s not hard with those reclining seats…
Sunday I went over to Newman for Mass…That
afternoon I went to Fr. Bill Leone’s Mom’s house for
supper, then Bill and I went home to East Rochester
to get ready for our trip to NYC…Monday at 5:40 or
so (about a half-hour late) we boarded the Empire
Service for New York. We got in to Penn Station
about 12:45, right on time. After a crosstown subway
ride we got settled at the Maryknoll House on 39th St.
They have a residence in the city for returning
missionaries, and if there are open rooms, travelling
priests can stay there. It’s a great location and price.
That night we were met by Bill’s Army buddy for
supper, then we went to Citi Field to see the Mets
play the Marlins. The 7 train was very crowded, as
the tennis tournament was going on too. I found
heavily discounted tickets on the web, so it was only
a little more than Red Wings tickets, and really good
seats. We were beat, so we left a little early…Tuesday
we went down to Ground Zero, then stopped at the
South Street Seaport for lunch. The afternoon was
spent at the Frick Collection on 70th St. It’s a
wonderful museum. That night we went to Sam’s
Place for supper—good Italian food…Wednesday we
took the M4 bus all the way through Manhattan to
The Cloisters—a 90 minute ride. We saw all of
Madison Avenue, then Columbia University and the
sights in Washington Heights, then the bus left us at
the doorway to the Museum. The Cloisters houses
the main part of the Medieval collection of the
Metropolitan, and is a wonderful spot. We took the
subway home and went to a small Italian place next
door to Maryknoll…Thursday we got on the train at
1:20 and got back to Rochester at 8:20…God bless
and have a good week!
IMPORTANT:
New Guidelines
for 2017
Offering a Mass for a particular intention has been a
way of remembering special people and special
intentions within the Church for centuries. We try to
honor requests for Mass intentions to the best of our
ability and according to the Code of Canon Law for the
universal Catholic Church.
We are finding several factors that affect
scheduling intentions:
 The number of requests for special dates (i.e.
special dates related to the person, Christmas,
September 4, 2016
Easter, etc.) versus the limited number of Masses
celebrated in our parish.
 Our desire to especially remember those who have
most recently died.
 The over-loading of the parish Mass schedule so
there are no spaces left for recent deaths.
 The need to follow the Code of Canon Law.
Therefore, we have set these guidelines:
 We can schedule a maximum of six (6) Masses per
year per parishioner/family --two (2) on a weekend
and four (4) weekdays.
 Ordinarily, there can be no multiple Mass
intentions for a Mass. However, to better
accommodate the needs of our parishioners, we will
adhere to the following: up to three first names
with the same last name (i.e. John, Paul and Mary
Smith) or two last names only (i.e. Deceased
members of the Scott & Smith Families) will be
allowed per intention.
 We can accept Mass intentions only up to 6 months
in advance. The Mass Book will be opened for
January-June the following year in October, and
May for July-December.
 After the death of a parishioner, a month’s mind
will be booked by the first person who requests a
Mass for the deceased.
 Loved ones of a deceased parishioner will have first
choice (before the book opens in October & May) to
have a first anniversary or birthday Mass scheduled.
In addition:
 The stipend for each Mass, as determined by
Diocesan policy, is $10.00. However, no one will be
denied an intention because of inability to pay.
 The Christmas Vigil, Christmas Day, Easter Vigil,
Easter Sunday, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day
Masses will always be for the intentions of the
Living and Deceased Members of the Parish.
 According to Canon Law, one (1) Sunday Mass per
weekend is offered for the intention of the
Parishioners of Nativity, usually the 1:00 pm
Spanish Mass.
 The intentions at Beikrich and The Landing, each
once a month, are also available to book.
 Another alternative is the sanctuary candle. There
is one intention per month (following the same no
multiple intentions guidelines & opening it up 6
months at a time). The offering is $40.
 Those who are homebound may call the Parish
Office to schedule a Mass/Candle, then send the
stipend in by mail.
 We will accept requests for intentions on a firstcome, first-served basis.
The Mass Book will open Monday, October 17
for January-June of 2017. No need to form a line that
Monday—Mass intentions may be made anytime at the
Parish Office (Monday-Friday, 9am-4pm), or by
telephone (637-4500). Stipends can be collected at the
office, by mail, or in a clearly-labelled envelope in the
collection.

the Upcoming Fall
Schedule: October 1–

If you do not have computer access and have
“not available dates” (including the Immaculate
Conception holyday, December 8th), please call Pamela

Second Collection Next Weekend
Bishop Matano has asked that all
parishes conduct a Second Collection
next weekend to help people in flooddevastated areas of Louisiana and provide pastoral and
rebuilding support to affected dioceses. More than
60,000 homes have been lost with nearly 20,000
people rescued from flood waters. If you choose to write
a check, please make it out to “Nativity of BVM” with
“Flooding” in the memo/notes field. All proceeds
collected will be sent to Catholic Charities USA, which
is actively working in the area to provide immediate
and long-term relief. You can also donate directly
online at: https://catholiccharitiesusa.org. Please
be generous and kindly keep all those affected by
the
flooding
in
your
prayers.
Annual Knights of Columbus
C & B Raffle
During the weekend of September 17 &
18, members of the local Knights of
Columbus Council #7707 will be at the
entrances of church to sell tickets for
the annual Charitable and Benevolent raffle. $50,000
total in prizes; $25,000 for first prize.
These donations support many charitable
programs, Catholic education, Special Olympics,
religious vocations, children with special needs
programs, Catholic Television Broadcast, Disaster relief
and many others. Your support is always appreciated.
Also, if you would like information on becoming a
Knight ask any member that weekend.

EL PROXIMO DOMINGO
TENDREMOS LA FIESTA DE
BIENVENIDA A LOS
TRABAJADORES DEL
CAMPO
familia.
