Page 3 Church of the Nativity, Brockport, New York Father Joe’s Week: Last Thursday, before leaving for my day off, I went to Beikirch to anoint Anne Johantgen. Then Fr. McKenna and I went to Uno’s for lunch, then to see Ant Man. We enjoyed the movie—it was smart and fun. The whole notion of a tiny superhero, aided by insects (ants, duh) is bizarre, but it works in the Marvel world…Friday morning I met to go over details for a wedding in December, had another appointment, then we had Mass and Adoration. I’m getting used to this holy hour once a week—look forward to it all week…Friday evening Fr. McKenna came out and we went to the Golden Eagle for a fish fry. Kevin stayed to watch the beginning of the Yankees-Blue Jays game (he is a serious Toronto fan)…Saturday arrived to find us walled in by the Arts Festival, including rock bands across the street. The bands played through our services; I hope they didn’t bother folks in the back of church during Mass. I could hear them from the front of church just a little. Of course it was an adventure driving all around town to get from here to there. I went to Mt. Olivet to do a committal service for Gary Caruso, and then to breakfast afterwards. Before I could get breakfast, Fowler’s called to say that Anne Johantgen had died. I met with her daughter, set the funeral time, and sent them the planning package via email, then returned for breakfast…That afternoon I went to Wegman’s to pick up Frs. Larry and Fernando, from the diocese of Nakuru, Kenya. I picked them up at Wegman’s so the person bringing them from Syracuse wouldn’t have to negotiate Brockport blocked up by the festival. They were a joy to have in my house, funny and down-to-earth. Fr. Fernando preached at SEAS, and after the Masses he returned and we had supper at my house (pork chops, grilled asparagus, curried rice). After supper we took a drive out to Lake Ontario—the guys took tons of pictures and walked out a jetty. So often they come to preach and don’t get to see anything of the area, just the rectory and the airport. They really enjoyed the evening. We also watched a baseball game. I tried to explain the basics and we had some fun with that…Sunday there was a scheduling error which left us without a cantor. Jean Brooks and I worked it out and I cantored as best I could. One of the hymns I’d never seen before, but it was fine. Thanks to a good congregation and Jean’s musicianship, we made it through…That afternoon I had a remembrance service at Mt. Olivet, and then went on to Holy Cross for the monthly dinner—always a good time…Monday noon the regional parish leaders met here to begin planning for next year. Then I went to Fowler’s to visit Anne Johantgen’s wake. We finalized the plans for her funeral, too…Tuesday we had Anne’s funeral. Fr. Bill Spilly joined me for the Mass, and after the interment at Mt. Olivet, we had a thank-you luncheon at Java for the ladies who help at our reception desk when Pamela is away. Thanks so much for your help…Wednesday evening I went to Adam and Mary Wright’s home to prepare them for baptism of their daughter, Amelie. Thanks for dessert!...God bless and have a good week! God’s Call to Nativity We turned in a Needs Assessment to the Diocese last month, and I learned this week that the Board of Consultors will meet early in September. Two priest consultors will be appointed for our project, and we will be able to discuss our building needs with them to get approval to begin our planning. It’s moving along!!! August 16, 2015 New Parishioners! We are glad you joined us.. Wilfredo, Danielle, Miguel, Theron, Tatiana, Daniel, & Sebastian Colon October 30-November 1 Notre Dame Retreat House Men of the parish— come spend time away on retreat and deepen your faith and relationship with God. This year’s theme, “Faith Under Fire,” will focus on keeping the fiath in a secular world. Our Catholic faith is constantly being challenged...come and learn how you can be a light in the world today! Suggested donation: $130 for single room; $100 for a shred double; and $195 for double alone (Retreat, meals, room, linens and towels all included in pricing.) To register for this retreat or to receive more information, please contact: Bill Hertweck at 293-2226, Dave Dobbertin at 293-3716 or Tony Pacilio at 637-2898. Victory for Women and Unborn Children Remember that cold snowy day in February when you and others in your parish signed the Diocesan Public Policy Committee’s petition opposing abortion expansion while supporting the nine other points of the Women’s Equality Agenda? Around the diocese our parishes gathered 10,362 signatures on this petition, asking the New York State Assembly to pass the life-affirming provisions of the WEA. While it took until the very end of the legislative session in late June, they did what we asked! Laws that protect survivors of domestic violence and human trafficking, that outlaw sexual harassment in all workplaces, and that require pay equity and greater fairness in the workplace for pregnant women and parents ALL PASSED both the State Sen ate and the Assembly. Moreover, the abortion expansion provision in the Women’s Equality Agenda was not included in the WEA bills passed in the Senate, so it will not become law like the other W EA pr ovision s w ill, once Governor Cuomo signs them. This bill would have legalized abortion in the third trimester and opened the door for non-physicians to perform abortions. Your advocacy has defended the dignity of women and saved the lives of pre-born children. The NYS Catholic Conference supported this legislation, and has posted a report on this and other issues from the 2015 NYS legislative session. Check it out and sign up for the Page 4 Church of the Nativity, Brockport, New York The Two Marian Feast Days in August Celebrated every year on August 15, the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary commemorates the death of Mary and her bodily assumption into Heaven, before her body could begin to decay--a foretaste of our own bodily resurrection at the end of time. Because it signifies the Blessed Virgin's passing into eternal life, it is the most important of all Marian feasts and most years, a Holy Day of Obligation. Let us pray: Father in heaven, all creation rightly gives you praise, for all life and all holiness come from you. In the plan of your wisdom she who bore the Christ in her womb was raised body and soul in glory to be with him in heaven. May we follow her example in reflecting your holiness and join in her hymn of endless love and praise. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. Pius XII established the feast of the Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary (August 22) in 1954. But Mary’s queenship has roots in Scripture. Mary was assumed into Heaven by Jesus and the angels. That means she was carried. Jesus ascended into Heaven, which is a different word. He went up to heaven by his own power. Mary doesn’t have that kind of power, so Jesus carried her. After she was assumed into Heaven, Jesus took His Mother to a throne next to his own. Since he is King and Lord of all, then as His Mother, she was to become Queen. Jesus, God our father and the Holy Spirit placed a beautiful crown of stars on her head. All the angels and saints sang wonderful songs praising the Queen. Let us pray: Father , You have given use the mother of your Son to be our queen and mother. With the support of her prayers May we come to share the glory of your children In the kingdom of heaven. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, Who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. “Love our Lady. And she will obtain abundant grace to help you conquer your daily struggle.” - St. Josemaria Escriva August 16, 2015 COMUNIDAD HISPANA - Ensayos del coro: domingos a las 12:30pm. - Nos estamos reuniendo como comunidad los martes a las 7:00pm.
