SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
WEEKLY MIRACLE
This week marks the beginning of a kind of
“liturgical detour.” We have been listening to Saint
Mark’s Gospel during this liturgical year (Year B).
Today we begin to hear a long section from John’s
Gospel, starting with the miracle of the multiplication
of the loaves and fishes. This miracle story is a prelude to the Lord’s statements that we will begin hearing in a few weeks, where Jesus refers to himself as
the “bread of life.” Each week we witness a miracle at
Mass. We do not see a multiplication of loaves before
us. What our eyes of faith allow us to see is the miracle of the transformation of common elements—bread
and wine—into the Lord’s body and blood. Once we
have received the Lord, the multiplication begins, for
in the Eucharist we are strengthened to multiply our
efforts to feed the poor, shelter the homeless, and
bring comfort to the despairing.

DEL ESCRITORIO DEL PASTOR
NECESIDADES DEL HOMBRE
Es aleccionador el humanismo del Buen Pastor, que
se preocupa de las necesidades del alma y del cuerpo:
de todo el hombre. Esta comida en el desierto
impresiona más si se lee en un contexto de hambre en
el mundo. La cadena de imágenes impresionantes no
se rompe. Pueden llegar desde Etiopia sin agua, desde
Haití desolado, desde Irak doliente antes, durante y
después de la Guerra del Golfo... El hambre es uno de
los dolorosos tópicos de nuestro tiempo de progreso.
Quizá al que tiene pan en abundancia le falta el
sentido del reconocimiento. El que no ha pasado
hambre no sabe valorar el pan. Tener una mesa bien
surtida puede parecer una cosa que «se da por
supuesta» en un país desarrollado. Muchos no lo
entienden así. Desaparece el sentimiento de ser
deudores ante Dios por el pan y dones de cada día;
Dios parece que no tiene nada que ver con nuestra
abundancia.
Es un olvido grave.
Todo cristiano consciente sabe que debe definirse
ante la vida según la vida y enseñanzas de Jesús. En
el evangelio de hoy encuentro una frase que suele
pasar desapercibida y es, sin embargo, un espejo que
nos devuelve la imagen de lo que cada uno debe ser:
Aquí hay un muchacho que tiene cinco panes y dos
peces. ¿Que hay en esa afirmación para elegirla como
síntesis de una vida?
