The question has been asked if it’s appropriate to hold hands during the Lord’s
Prayer? Holding hands during the recitation of the “Our Father” at Mass are gestures
that the faithful have initiated and adopted over the years, often leaving bishops and
priests at a loss as to how to reverse this. These gestures are not prescribed postures in
the liturgy, incorporated in the Roman Catholic rite. The signification of the family
union of the Church is expressed in reciting or singing the “Our Father” in unison.
While there is no particular difficulty in a couple or family spontaneously holding hands
during the prayer, it is inappropriate when the entire assembly is expected or obliged to
do so.

The True Wisdom
When we think of wise people, perhaps we think about the image of our grandparents,
who in their advice, always seem to know what’s best. But during our youth we may
believe that, by having gone to school or by experiencing these modern time, we may
think we know it all. Then, there is a kind of struggle for control and power in the
groups. Competition arises to see who has, knows, or can do more. At work and in
many schools competitiveness is in some way encouraged. And afterwards, we transfer
it to all relationships, including Christian communities.
I had a friend who said that, when two or more Christians are gathered, there is sure to
be conflict. This may be true in any group of human beings. Rivalries, competition,
trying to gain control of something are always the order of the day. Today we are invited to the true wisdom. Wisdom, says the Old Testament, is like a light that indicates
proper behavior. And James challenges those who think they have greater knowledge
and wisdom to think about humility. Humility is the best antidote against conflicts between brothers and sisters. It saves from the envy that makes us resentful. Such wisdom leads to humility-and humility, said St. Teresa, is the truth-which is peaceful, understanding, docile, and pious. This wisdom gives good results because it unites the
community instead of dividing it. It is the wisdom of God that is embodied in Jesus
Christ. It is difficult to understand why the ways of the world teach us to compete with
each other, fight, and to try to be number one, while in the mind of God, it is kinder and
wiser to give of ourselves.
For Reflection
At what times do I feel almost fighting to be first or to have control of something? Do I
feel resentful because someone seems to have more than me or know more than I do?

Y Santiago desafía a quienes
yo?
