Dear Valdez Families,
I wish to thank you all once again for allowing me the honor of serving as principal at Valdez for the past five
years. It has been incredibly gratifying for me to see our school develop and to build lasting relationships with
many of you. I will not be far away and hope to visit Valdez often. I am confident that our students will
continue making progress and that our staff will lead the school to continued improvement. I will leave my
contact information at the front office.
As the year ends, we have reflected on our students’ academic progress. We continue to see tremendous
growth in our students as well as room to improve. In order to monitor student progress, we look at multiple
ways to measure student learning, including formal and informal assessments in reading, writing, and math.
We use this assessment data to inform our instruction and planning for each student on a weekly basis. We
also use non-student days throughout the year - after our interim tests - to do in-depth planning. This allows
us to be able to group students and target instruction to meet each student’s needs.
As we reflect on our students’ progress this year, I would like to share a few highlights with you.
 65%-85% of Kinder-2nd grade students are at or above grade level in reading in their first language.
 50%-85% of 2nd-5th grade students are proficient or advanced on the spring interim tests in reading.
 50%-75% of 2nd-5th grade students are proficient or advanced on the spring interim tests in math.
 School-wide attendance grew from 91% in 2008 to 95+% this year.
Some of you have read the results of the 3rd grade reading TCAP (formerly CSAP) test. Only 33% of our
students were proficient or advanced in English and 43% in Spanish. Students took this test in their first
language only. Whereas these scores are lower than they were for our 3rd graders last year, they represent
growth for this particular group of students. We still have work to do with this group and we will focus on
their growth next year as they enter 4th grade.
We have so many accomplishments to be proud of! Thank you for your support. Have a wonderful and safe

Estimadas familias de Valdez,
Quiero agradecer a todos ustedes una vez más por permitirme el honor de ser el director de Valdez estos
últimos cinco años. Me ha dado muchísima satisfacción ver nuestra escuela desarrollar y a crear relaciones
permanentes con muchos de ustedes. No estaré lejos y espero visitar a Valdez frecuentemente. Estoy seguro
que nuestros alumnos seguirán progresando y que nuestros maestros serán líderes para mejorara la escuela.

Como el año termina, hemos reflejado en el progreso académico de nuestros alumnos. Continuamos viendo el
crecimiento increíble de cada alumno y necesidad para mejorar. Para vigilar sobre el progreso, miramos en
varias maneras de evaluar el aprendizaje de los alumnos, incluyendo evaluaciones formales e informales en
lectura, escritura, y matemáticas.
Usamos estos datos de evaluaciones para informar nuestra instrucción y planes para cada alumno cada
semana. También usamos los días sin alumnos para planear más profundamente. Nos permite a poner
alumnos en grupos y a enfocar nuestra instrucción para cada alumno.
En reflejar en el progreso de los alumnos este año, quiero compartir algunos puntos excelentes con ustedes.

lengua solamente. Aunque estos resultados están más bajos que el año pasado, representan crecimiento para
algunos alumnos particulares. Tendremos que trabajar con este grupo el año que viene a si como entren a 4˚
grado. Para los otros resultados de (TCAP), los veremos en agosto. Esperemos mucho crecimiento de este año
pasado basado en nuestros exámenes de “interm”
