Our Educational Beliefs Newton College is fully committed to the International Baccalaureate’s goal “to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect”. Our own mission statement focuses on the same goal of forming “well-rounded and successful citizens”. We believe that our graduates should have the skills and attitudes to help improve the well-being of their local and global communities. The beliefs that underpin our educational philosophy are: • All members of our school community must act with integrity and honesty at all times, treating others with fairness, justice and respect. • We must be caring and compassionate, showing sensitivity towards the customs and beliefs of others. • Education for sustainable development is caring for the well-being of all living creatures and of the natural environment now and for generations to come. • Inquiry and self-discovery lead to a more enduring understanding of concepts. They promote investigation skills and independent learning. • Developing critical thinking is a priority goal as it enables pupils to analyse and evaluate information intelligently and to make reasoned decisions. Mariana Otero HEAD GIRL 2015 • Good communication skills allow pupils to express and defend their opinions and feelings with confidence and empathy. • Making mistakes is an important part of the learning process and pupils must be given quality feedback, which prompts them to reflect on how to improve. • Pupils must have a clear understanding of their personal and cultural identity, enriched by an international perspective. • They must receive a well-balanced education that nurtures their intellectual, physical and emotional development. • They must learn to be adaptable to change and resilient in the face of adversity. Andrés López HEAD BOY 2015 Our academic and extended curricula are aligned to these beliefs. This year, both Mariana Otero and Andrés Lopez (see photos), were accepted by the prestigious New York University Abu Dhabi. Entrance into NYUAD is limited to around 300 of the world’s most talented students per admission session. It is rare that two students from the same school are offered a place in the same academic year. NYUAD aims to “nurture in students the analytic and communicative skills, the breadth and depth of intellect, and the international perspective and experience that leadership in our increasingly interconnected world requires”. We are confident that Mariana and Andrés will achieve this goal as will many other Newton students. Alumnos de Nivel I presentando su obra de fin de año Inquiry is as experiential as possible The IB PYP in Early Years In Early Years we deliver the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP) which aims to cultivate international mindedness in our pupils by developing the attributes of the Learner Profile. The PYP is constructivist and inquiry-based and encourages pupils to discover new knowledge by making connections with previous knowledge. It is also concept-based and fosters enduring understanding of central ideas of global relevance. The Early Years units of inquiry focus on relevant and meaningful central ideas for pupils of this age. For example, in Level II they discover various, practical ways of taking care of our planet; in Pre-Kinder they examine how families are organised differently according to cultural beliefs; in Kinder they evaluate how countries are connected through traditions. Each unit of inquiry follows an inquiry cycle. This starts with a provocation activity during which children explain what they already know about the topic and what they would like to know about it, asking questions which they will investigate later. Inquiry is as experiential as possible and thus, pupils often receive a visit from specialists on the topic or visit a site related to it. They then present their findings to their classmates and respond to additional questions –a very important life skill, which teaches pupils how to organise, synthesise and present information in an engaging manner. Whenever possible, pupils will put their findings into practice -the action component of the unit. From a very early age they must understand the connection between learning and citizenship. In Early Years our constant goal is to create more learning engagements that lead to community action. Students have a close encounter with amazing insects Pupils enrich their knowledge of Peruvian culture with the Regional Fair Inquiry process during the unit about living creatures El aprendizaje vivencial Lower School Lower School está constituido por los cinco primeros grados de primaria (1ro a 5to grado), y alberga a alumnos desde 6 hasta 11 años de edad. 5to Grado visita el Museo de Arte como parte de la unidad “Como nos expresamos” Alumnos de 4to Grado representando a la civilización Azteca Learning through exploration and experience The IB PYP in Lower School The concept of exploring and thinking in Lower School is related with how our students make sense of the things, places and people in their world by interacting with others, investigating and questioning, forming and refining ideas. They develop a wide-range of new knowledge and skills during these experiences and reflect on new ways to be creative, take risks and make discoveries. We are extremely fortunate to have a rich and diverse culture in Lima, where our students have plentiful opportunities to make sense of what they see, feel and experience by exploring in many different ways. They gather information by visiting a range of local places, by learning from experts, and by trying new activities. These activities are transdisciplinary in nature as they connect and apply concepts learnt in their study of sciences, language, history, arts, maths, economics and geography. Through these experiences students also appreciate the relevance of what they are learning to life outside the classroom. They begin to better comprehend the concept of citizenship. Real life explorers in 3rd Grade Students understand more easily the relevance of their learning when it leads to and involves action. For example, in 1st grade at the end of the unit “Sharing the Planet”, the students organize a garage sale in which they sell reused items to raise money for other children in need. Our 2nd graders learn about the senses in their unit “Who We Are” and organize an activity day for blind children from CEBE San Francisco. Our 3rd graders become reallife explorers from the past and show their learning dramatically during their unit “Where We Are in Place and Time”. Our 4th graders create their own plays in their unit of study about civilizations in which they compare civilizations from the past and today. In 5th grade, students use their ICT skills and creativity to write raps about the responsible use of technology for communication during their unit “How We Express Ourselves”. The PYP in Lower School dynamically stimulates the cognitive, emotional, social and spiritual growth of our students. It makes learning relevant and enjoyable and helps them to develop the attributes of the IB Learner Profile, such as inquirers, thinkers, risk-takers, caring and communicators. In our increasingly globalised world, such attributes are becoming essential features to be successful lifelong learners. How can we prepare children for a world we cannot predict? The IB MYP in Upper School The traditional role of a school has been to transmit a relatively stable collection of knowledge and skills from one generation (teachers) to the next (students). Before the age of the Internet, what a student needed to know could fit comfortably in a selection of books and on a succession of chalkboards. Now, that security is gone and we need to form students who can cope with a rapidly changing world, applying the understandings they develop in the classroom to the unfamiliar contexts of the future. With this in mind, Newton College has decided to implement the lB Middle Years Programme (MYP) in Grade 6 through to Form IV. In 2018 we will no longer teach the IGCSE programmes. Instead, we will deliver our own MYP for these key reasons: • The IB continuum of programmes In 2014 the MYP was fully reviewed and relaunched. The new MYP provides a better bridge between the Primary Years Programme (PYP) and the Diploma Programme (DP). It reinforces key features of the PYP, namely, inquiry-based learning, international mindedness and conceptual understanding. It prepares students for the central elements of the DP: the MYP long-term project trains them for the DP extended essay; the Community Project for CAS; and Approaches to Learning for Theory of Knowledge. • A holistic programme that reinforces interdisciplinary connections Whilst students in a music class learn how to create and play a variety of stringed instruments, in their physics class they study the behaviour of sound waves. The MYP allows teachers to carefully map the development of knowledge and skills so that they are naturally transferred from one subject discipline to another. • Rigour and assessment The rigour of the IGCSE is driven by the need to prepare for external examinations in the final year of the programme. The MYP provides eAssessment, a reliable and highly innovative assessment model that helps students achieve greater outcomes and gives them a formal, internationallyrecognised certificate if they meet the success criteria. Newton students at LiMUN Discussing points of view for a Spanish assignment The MYP allows us to create a curriculum that is more focused on our local reality and the needs of our students. As one teacher aptly put it “the IGCSE is as good as the exams; the MYP is as good as the teachers.” At Newton College, we believe we have first-class teachers who can create and deliver an excellent MYP. Proyecto “Street Store” en Villa María del Triunfo “The future belongs to those who prepare for it today” - Malcom X The IB Diploma Programme In an increasingly globalized world, where national boundaries are becoming less and less important and where life skills and, consequently, study skills are changing constantly, a rigorous, holistic, international education is more relevant than ever before. This is why our bilingual International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) is extremely advantageous for the future. In the IBDP students learn to look at knowledge and concepts not just from a Peruvian or British perspective but from a genuine global understanding. It is a balanced programme that takes into account the relevance of the autonomy of academic disciplines but more importantly, their connectivity. Worldwide, it is regarded as an excellent preparation for university, the workplace and life. Research studies show that universities around the world, including a significant number in Peru, admit IBDP students because they have developed a high level of: • • • • • • understanding of and appreciation for research presentation and communication skills critical thinking skills report writing skills sense of international mindedness and cultural understanding time management skills In most private Peruvian universities and some public ones, not only do students with the IB Diploma get automatic entry into the university, in many cases they also get credits. At Newton College, we aim to develop the future leaders that Peru needs –people with the corresponding skills and values who will contribute to a fairer and more peaceful world. Although the future may be uncertain, we still need to prepare students for it so that they may become masters of their own destiny in a complex and highly connected world. Geography field trip in Huaraz There are fewer than 3,000 schools around the world which are authorized to teach the IBDP. Fewer than 1,000 of these offer their students a bilingual Diploma Programme. Therefore, Newton College students are extremely fortunate to have the opportunity to study for a bilingual diploma in English and Spanish, the two most widely spoken languages in the world. Taking advantage of this opportunity and completing the bilingual IBDP is an important step in preparing for an uncertain future. BSP Spelling Bee Proyecto Ciudadano Cultivando acelgas en el Club de Jardinería Education extends beyond classroom doors The Extended Curriculum Model United Nations enables students to become remarkable researchers, negotiators, communicators and problem solvers of global issues. At a MUN conference, they represent a country in trying to negotiate resolutions with other countries’ diplomats on topics such as nuclear disarmament, disease control, drug and child trafficking, migration and refugees, among others. Newton students have won awards in the annual Harvard MUN Conference in Boston, and in many local conferences the team has also won the Best Delegation award. Presently, our MUN students are working with the Ministry of Education and leading workshops to help public schools introduce MUN in their curriculum. In 2015 the Newton Debate Team won all but one debate competition and it is currently undefeated in 2016. This year, our Form V student Deweena Parija was selected to represent Peru in the World Schools Debate Championships in Stuttgart, Germany in July. Students from 56 countries participated and Peru came an unprecedented ninth place losing only to Canada in the quarter finals. Deweena commented: “This experience was demanding and stressful but I loved it. I had the opportunity of meeting some of the most brilliant minds around the world and sharpening my debating skills.” Education extends beyond classroom doors. Our extended curriculum greatly enriches our academic programmes and the CVs of our students. This is the added value that helped some of our 2015 graduates be offered places at some of the top 100 universities in the world1: University of California Los Angeles, London School of Economics, University of Toronto, New York University Abu Dhabi, University of British Columbia, Manchester University, Boston University, University of Southern California, Durham University, St. Andrew’s University and Emory University. The best universities in the world are no longer looking for just academic excellence. They seek students who will contribute to those around them, who care passionately about local and global issues, and who engage in experiences that stimulate their creativity and leadership. 1 According to the Times Higher Education, World University Rankings 2015-2016 Supporting blood donation campaign for Hospital del Niño Deweena Parija and the Peruvian Delegation at the World Schools Debating Championship La música aporta al crecimiento integral Música La práctica musical desarrolla la sensibilidad artística, amplía el pensamiento lógico y favorece las competencias en idiomas. Concierto de 3er Grado Orquesta Newton Coro de Lower School The aspiration to become anyone and everyone Theatre Arts Theatre is one of the oldest, most profound and most universal of human activities. It nourishes, sustains and extends the human spirit. It is the application, through play, of energy and imagination to frame, reflect, expose, critique and speculate. It is the aspiration to become anyone and everyone and most importantly, to get to know your true, inner self. At Newton College, the main objective of the Theatre Arts Department is to contribute to the students’ cognitive, emotional and social growth, enhancing their self-esteem and nourishing their personality. Students learn and apply a variety of techniques, skills and conventions from a wide, international range of genres in order to create and present original theatre. The Theatre Arts curriculum runs continuously from Level I in Early Years to the IB Diploma Programme in Form VI, and is complemented by extracurricular activities, specialized workshops run by theatre professionals, visits to external productions and talkbacks with directors and ensembles. Students develop their full artistic potential on and around the stage in order to become creative theatre-makers, collaborative and innovative problemsolvers, and confident, empathetic human beings with a global mindset. Theatre Arts classes Surrealist theatre “(The girl who fell) From Within” Kinder Show “Toy Story” “Retorno a Ayodhya”, inspired by Indian Theatre Kathakali Modern clown style “Six in search of...” Técnica de acuarela y plumón Perspectiva Fair play, respect, cooperation and humility Physical Education and Sports Newton College recognizes the importance of physical activity in relation to personal health and a balanced lifestyle. We know that physical activity has important positive side effects, such as the development of concentration, memory and time management, which facilitate a better academic performance. Team sports promote social skills - a sense of camaraderie and belonging. In our technological world it is very tempting to spend time and entertain ourselves in a sedentary way. However, physical inactivity can lead to health and psychological issues, such as obesity, anxiety and depression. A real interest in physical fitness will lead to lifelong healthy choices. For these reasons, the main objectives of our Physical Education programme are: • • • • • to develop in students the necessary skills to master a wide variety of physical activities and sports; to encourage them to lead a healthy and active life; to offer them the opportunity to participate in sports competitions; to promote the values of fair play, respect, cooperation and humility; to develop self-discipline, resilience and leadership. Preparing for the ADCA athletics competition PE and extra-curricular swimming To expand the possibilities of training in specific sports, our programme of extracurricular activities after school hours include swimming, athletics, football, volleyball, basketball, gymnastics, rugby, tae kwon do and chess. These activities are conducted by specialized coaches and teachers, who focus on the development of individual and team skills. They also organize friendly and competitive matches and sport trips. 2016 ADCA basketball champions - category Mayores The school has excellent sports facilities. These include our sports centre with floating wood floor and which can accommodate 400 spectators; the indoor semi-olympic heated pool, with seating for 200 people; and a shallow outdoor swimming pool for younger pupils. We also have 12,000 m2 of natural grass sports fields, which were renovated in 2014; an artificial turf field surrounded by a running track of 200 metres; two multipurpose roofed courts, and two outdoor courts for basketball and volleyball. Arguably, the most biodiverse region of the Amazon The Sachavacayoc Amazon Field Centre In 1994, Newton College began construction of the Sachavacayoc Amazon Field Centre. Located in the Tambopata National Reserve, the centre is designed for groups of students and researchers. Our primary purpose is to inspire stewardship of the natural environment through first-hand experience, education and research. Flora and fauna in the rainforest The centre is an essential component of Newton College’s commitment to education for sustainable development. Without effective environmental stewardship, there can be no sustainable development. We believe that you will not try to protect what you do not love, and cannot effectively protect what you do not know. For these reasons, the centre aims to provide high quality, first-hand knowledge of an exceptional part of the natural world. The rainforest of Madre de Dios is arguably the most biodiverse region of the Amazon, the Earth’s largest and richest terrestrial habitat. Tambopata itself holds a number of world records for biodiversity in a protected area, including most species of birds (632), butterflies (1237), ants (362), and dragonflies (153). The Centre is in an excellent location to take advantage of all this biological richness. It is remote enough from the nearest city to be surrounded by pristine habitats –over 60 kms of river travel away from Puerto Maldonado– yet close enough to be accessible by a two-hour boat journey. The Centre comprises 132 hectares of primary (93%) and secondary (7%) forest, and an extensive system of trails –over 64 kms– provides access to two oxbow lakes, multiple clay licks, and most of the major habitat types native to the Tambopata National Reserve. Over the years, thousands of students from schools around the world and many researchers have visited and worked at the Centre. They have been given the chance to know the remarkable diversity and beauty of this corner of the Amazon. Most leave with an appreciation of it, and many return because they have fallen in love with it. Field work in Tambopata Newton College students visit the Centre in Form I to study ecosystems and their intricate coexistence. They return in Form VI to carry out investigations for their Biology IB Diploma course. Newton families are also invited to visit and fall in love with this unique part of the world. Alumnos haciendo uso de las herramientas de Google Fostering enthusiasm, pride and loyalty The House System A common feature of many schools in Great Britain is the House system. It was originally formed at a time when travel was difficult and students would live part of the year in boarding houses in their schools. The Houses gained names and became natural vertical groupings of students and staff. By grouping students vertically, older students learn to respect younger ones, and younger ones learn not to fear older ones. Tudor vs. Lancaster in 5th Grade Interhouse basketball At Newton there are four Houses named after British royal families: Lancaster (red), Tudor (green), Windsor (blue) and York (yellow). Everyone in the school -students, families, teachers, administrative and maintenance staff- is a member of one of these Houses. The primary aim is to provide an opportunity for participation in many areas, both sporting and non-sporting. Students may be reasonable footballers, but not quite good enough to get into the school team. In the House system they can become part of a football team and play in an official tournament, thus feeling the pride and team spirit that such participation generates. The House system provides an opportunity to promote healthy competition, solidarity and respect among the whole student community. Winners of the School House Shield The House system also enriches the programme of activities and, in addition to traditional sports, competitions are organised in cross country running, debating, general knowledge, cooking, sudoku, problem solving, creative writing and science challenges. Moreover, the system allows students to gain leadership experience as the House Captains and Year Captains organise their teams and, in some cases, the events. At Newton College the House system fosters enthusiasm, pride and loyalty. The four Houses compete for the School House Shield which is given out at the end of the year in the Prize-Giving Ceremony. Lifting the shield is one of the proudest moments in a student’s life at Newton. Carol Ann Tomlinson, educadora y oradora estadounidense The best teachers are also the best learners Teacher coaching We believe that teachers are the most important contributors to students’ achievement, more so than excellent facilities, small classes or even dynamic leadership. The teacher’s impact on students can extend far beyond the academic domain; it can affect the physical and emotional health of students throughout their lives. Neuroscience has enlightened us on the best stimuli for effective learning. It is important therefore, for teachers to replicate these stimuli as much as possible in the classroom. Effective teaching in the XXI century is very different to that of the XX century. Technology has obviously played an important role in this shift but a teacher’s set skill involves much more than the intelligent use of technology. Education systems have often been criticized for not keeping up with the changes in society. The skills that our students will need in the future vary considerably from those of previous generations. Therefore, it is important that teachers receive constant training on how to facilitate the learning of XXI century skills. Teachers typically go through a few years of university courses and then receive very limited training and supervision during their careers. They may go to workshops and conferences but research shows that such professional development does not One-on-one teacher coaching have long-lasting effects. Just as students learn better when they receive constant, quality feedback from teachers, teachers improve more when they receive constant feedback from a coach. Consequently, Newton College has decided to invest in teacher coaching. Master teachers receive special coaching training and then work intensively with individual teachers. During several weeks they visit the teachers’ classrooms, analyse videos and provide support. The teachers are prompted to reflect on their practice and to self-direct their improvement. We are in the second year of our teacher coaching programme and the feedback from teachers who have received this kind of training is overwhelmingly positive. Visitors from other schools have given us similar feedback. We will obviously carry out a more systematic evaluation of the impact of the programme but we are confident that it is improving student learning. Teaching is an incredibly challenging craft, in which the best teachers are also the best learners. We are proud that our training programme is motivating teachers to constantly reflect, learn and facilitate student learning.
