MINISTRY DAYS 2015
Welcome / Bienvenida
I invite you to attend Ministry Days 2015:
Gathered Into One
Les invito a asistir a La Jornada Pastoral 2015:
Congregados en la Unidad
Pope Francis is calling us to reach out to the
farthest corners of the Diocese as missionary
disciples of the Lord Jesus.
Jesus sent the disciples out two by two because
doing God’s work begins with companionship.
In the Lord’s call to us, “Come, follow me,” (Mk. 1.17) the message
is implicit that we do not walk alone. The Lord accompanies us as
a good shepherd and a good friend. He also invites us to be the
faithful witnesses of His companionship for one another.
At this year’s Diocesan Ministry Days we are “Gathered Into One by
the Holy Spirit” to renew our fellowship with Christ and each other. Gathered as one Church we will learn from the Good Teacher how to
be joyful missionary disciples of His gospel.
In December we will begin the Jubilee Year of Mercy. Ministry Days
will help us to enter into the jubilee spirit, celebrating the wonders
of God’s mercy in the Church and learning to share God’s mercy with
a joyful heart.
Mark your calendar. Let us keep one another and all the Body of
Christ in prayer. May the intercession of our Blessed Mother, Santa
María de Guadalupe, help us walk always in the good company of
her Son, Jesus.
+ Jaime Soto
Bishop of Sacramento
As the Body of Christ, everyone is called to
work together to evangelize the world and
build God’s kingdom here on earth. Let
us all remember that we can accomplish
much more together than we can alone.
This year’s Ministry Days asks us to focus on
collaboration. At every Mass, we are “gathered into one by the
Holy Spirit.” With a little effort, we could accomplish so much
more and be much more effective through collaboration! Join
us to equip yourself with the skills and resources you need,
take time to evaluate your lives and programs, ask the Holy
Spirit for help, connect with others who do what you do, learn
something new, and spend some time in prayer.
Roll up your sleeves - Here we go!
+ Jaime Soto

What Got us here Won’t Get Us There -
Fishers of Men or Keepers of the Aquarium -
In our increasingly virtual and disconnected world, it can be
tough to remember that we are ONE body in Christ. In this talk,
Roy will remind us of Christ ‘s constant invitation to unity, to
oneness and to wholeness, as a way of more effectively serving
our brothers and sisters.
Too often we can easily slip into ministering only to those who
come to us and neglect what can be a more difficult ministry
and outreach to those who do not come to church. Roy will
discuss some internal obstacles many of us face in reaching
out to those in our community and offer some practical ways
to make it easier to reach out to those who do not come to
church.

Session
A Workshops - English
Friday • September 25, 2015 • 11:15am - 12:30pm
A-01
A-06
Many families drift away from church during the stressful early
childhood years. At parishes, we may struggle with the question of
what we can offer them. This is when we need to help parents step
into their role as the primary teachers of their children in faith. But we
need to start with where they are. This workshop will explore: we can
use the baptism preparation process to evangelize and support new
parents, how parishes can continue to keep young families engaged,
and the resources available to support parish leaders in this ministry.
This workshop will help you prepare a “class Mass” or “all-school Mass”
from beginning to end. Get practical advice about how to prepare
everything from the readings, music, environment, homily ideas,
PARTICIPATION, and involving children in liturgical ministries. Liturgy
preparation, as with liturgy itself, is a collaborative effort, a true
“Gathering Into One by Holy Spirit.” A step by step preparation guide,
a list of people to involve in the preparation process, and an online
and published resource list will be provided.

James Cavanagh
Liturgy 101 for Teachers and Catechists
Caroline Easton
A-07
According to Vatican II, the active participation of the faithful in
the Mass is “the aim to be considered above all else.” The question
for many people involved in liturgy and music, however, is how
to achieve that noble goal. This talk will explain the true meaning
of “active participation” and offer 12 suggestions for increasing
congregational participation.

One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church
Armando Cervantes
How many times have you said these words? How many times do
you talk about our one united catholic faith? But have you really
lived it? In this workshop we will learn how this Catholic faith can
be lived out intergenerationally, interculturally and in a way that
can be transformative for the entire community.
This workshop is also offered on Saturday at 11:15AM as Workshop D-02

An Invitation to Strengthen a Community
Through Parish and School Collaboration
Terry Cotting-Mogan
A community may be strengthened when a parish and its Catholic
school remember that they are serving the same community and
invite each other to share in their ministries. Come discover simple
and practical ways to support each other and collaborate.
A-05
Letting It Go: Communicating Effectively
with Parents During Tough Times
Armando Diaz
Whether it’s having a sensitive parent/teacher meeting or responding
to an emotional parent e-mail, the dilemma is clear. How do you
effectively communicate student concerns to parents while still
maintaining a positive partnership with them? This workshop will
provide teachers practical, hands-on skills to help them navigate
these difficult situations.
Scouting in the Catholic Community
TBA
Learn how the Catholic Church and Scouting can work hand-in-hand
in the development of America’s youth, through an extension of your
youth ministry. Over the last century, millions of youth have benefited
from scouting through character building, reinforcing values,
providing leadership opportunities and service to the community. Come learn about our exciting new opportunities, which include
STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), High Adventure
and local camps, merit badges, journeys and so much more!
This workshop is also offered on Saturday at 11:15AM as Workshop D-23

Keep watch over yourselves ... (Acts 20:28)
Deacon David and Lorie Ford
For many in ministry we say “yes” to service with full hearts but
can, over time, experience burn-out, exhaustion, stress, etc. St. Paul
encouraged the presbyters and ministers of the Church of Ephesus
not only to keep watch over the “whole flock,” but also to keep watch
over “themselves.” This workshop will explore the elements of “selfcare” for ministers. We will examine the Jesus of the Gospels as a
good role model for self-care, enjoy both humorous and inspirational
videos, and reflect together on the Spirit’s role in helping us “keep
watch” over ourselves spiritually and practically.

Why not Physician-Assisted Suicide?
John Hamlon
Assisted-suicide bills are currently under consideration not only in
California, but also in a number of other states. What is the prognosis
for the Physician-Assisted Suicide movement? Why is the Catholic
Church opposed to Physician-Assisted Suicide, when many view it as
a reasonable and compassionate response? Are there non-religious
public policy reasons why assisted-suicide is a bad idea? If so, what
are they?

Holy Spirit: Protagonist of our Prayer,
Evangelization and Catechesis
Dr. Joseph Hollcraft, PhD.
We are a Church of Martyrs
TBA
What role does the Holy Spirit have in our life of prayer and how
does the Holy Spirit impact our evangelization and catechesis? How
should we catechize about the Holy Spirit? Come to this workshop to
discover the answers to these questions.

Engaging Students in the Augmented Classroom
Arnell J. Ignacio
The rapid growth of the Internet and the introduction of smart mobile
devices have dramatically elevated our ability to communicate,
interact and learn. What if we could harness this technology to not
only engage students, but also encourage collaboration and include
parents and families in the learning process? In this workshop, we
look at specific tools that will help us achieve these goals for K-12
classrooms and faith-formation classes.

The Living Word
Sam Kauffman
Drama brings to life the living Word of God and helps us more clearly
understand God’s message to us. By learning and understanding
the basic elements of drama, God’s exciting Word is brought to life.
God’s Word and life lessons are taught using simple, easily adaptable
techniques such as holiday pageants, tableau, pantomime and simple
dramas with music. Audience participation is encouraged at this
workshop, suitable for ages 3 to 103.

Imagination and Scripture - Use it or lose it!
Fr. Francisco Velazquez
Be prepared to find that imagination is a gift we posses to encounter
the Spirit in our daily lives. Come rediscover the One who gathers us,
challenges us to witness deeper, and gives us the script to make the
Spirit come alive in all settings. You will leave with tools for personal
formation, classrooms, and youth groups. Caution: No strobe lights,
but Scripture and images will be used.

What Young People Want You to Know
(But Won’t Tell You)
Roy Petitfils
Roy has spent years listening to young people, as a youth minister,
an educator, a parent and now as a therapist. He’s heard them share
things he knew they weren’t sharing with their friends, other adults
and their teachers. In this dynamic, humorous session, Roy will share
what’s really going on inside the minds and hearts of young people.
You’ll be surprised by what they most deeply want you to know about
them, and what they really want and need from you. You’ll walk away
with tools and strategies for incorporating this information into the
way you minister, teach, and parent.

Toolkit for Global Solidarity in the Classroom
and Community
Ken Preston
Reaching out in solidarity with the poor around the world is at the
heart of the gospel message. Is it a part of your classroom or parish
ministry? In this workshop, we will share practical ways to help our
children, teens and community enrich their understanding of, and
actively participate in, global solidarity with our most vulnerable
brothers and sisters. Together we will build your solidarity toolkit
using resources and programs offered by Catholic Relief Services
(CRS), the formal emergency relief and international development
agency of the U.S. Catholic Church.

A Light for My Path: Praying the Psalms on the
Way of the Cross
Michael Ruzicki
Grace: Good News for Everyone
Rick Norman
The Catholic Catechism says, “Grace is a participation in the life
of God. It introduces us into the intimacy of Trinitarian life...”. This
workshop will show how we have forgotten grace, how we can
rediscover grace, and why there is reason for great joy. As St. Therese
of Lisieux says “Everything is grace.”
This workshop is also offered on Saturday at 1:15PM as Workshop E-10
6
In his Tertio Millennio Adveniente, St. John Paul II wrote, “In our own
century the martyrs have returned, many of them nameless, ‘unknown
soldiers’ as it were of God’s great cause...their witness should not be
lost to the Church.” As a mainstay of his Pontificate, Pope Francis has
said, “The Church today is a Church of martyrs: they suffer, they give
their lives and we receive the blessing of God for their witness.” This
workshop will look at martyrdom today, the witness our martyrs give,
and seek to discover the blessings given by their testimonies.
Gather with us in song, Scripture, and prayer as we accompany
Christ, our brother, in praying our way to the Cross, by reflecting on
the Word in the Book of Psalms. Attentive to the vast array of human
emotions, this gathering will invite participants to reflect on their own
life experience and encounter the saving power of the Cross. These
ancient Scripture prayers unite our voices to Christ, the eternal light,
who illumines our journey to the New and Eternal Jerusalem.

organizations; and how to awaken social concern in the hearts of
those receiving confirmation and call them to discipleship through
confirmation preparation.
With secular society growing increasingly impatient with the Church’s
positions on marriage, many Catholics find themselves struggling
to defend that position. This is not because the Church is wrong
on the issue; it has never had to defend the position before and is,
therefore, unprepared. There is a BIG difference between wrong and
unprepared! Attendees will learn that marriage is an objective reality,
what that reality is and why it is so important, and how to discuss the
issue with clarity and charity.

“We Go To God Together”: Creative Collaborative
Strategies for Continuing Conversion
Sue Schuttinger
Come, learn by doing as we experience creative strategies for
collaboration that engage and involve children, teens, parents, single
and older adults, catechists, teachers and parish staff. We will explore
how all members of a parish community, and even the broader civic
community, can work together as disciples on a lifelong journey. It
is easier than you think, so come discover for yourself! You will leave
with handouts, tools and ideas that are easy to implement and lead to
an exciting spirit of everyone working together.

The Mythology of Annulments
Cheryl Tholcke, Fr. Mark Richards, JCL
The annulment process is a collaboration between the Tribunal, parish
advocates, and the parties involved. Come find out how you can help
as we address the most commonly-held myths about annulments in
the Catholic Church. Is it really just a “Catholic divorce”? Does “good
standing” in the Church guarantee an annulment? Are big donors
more likely to get an annulment? Does it really take three to five years
for an annulment to be granted? Do children become illegitimate?
Does an annulment cost as much as a divorce? Bring your questions!

Focusing Film on Faith and the Framework
Chuck Zannetti
This workshop will demonstrate how to utilize contemporary and
popular film to help the high school student understand the doctrinal
content of the Bishops’ Framework. The participant will walk away
with a methodology for writing curriculum, based on Framework
units, that is rigorous and relevant using backward design and the
Rigor and Relevance and Relationship model of instruction, a method
for deconstructing film for classroom use, and a list of resources on
curriculum and film for religious studies.

Engaging Young Adults in the Life of the Parish:
Young Adults and Stewardship
Kevin Staszkow
Most Young Adult Catholics in their 20s and 30s are not convinced
that giving their time, treasure and talent to the Catholic Church is
a good investment. Further, they are hesitant to register in a parish
or claim a single parish as their home. How can we convince this

Armando Cervantes

Renew Yourself So You Can Help Renew Those
Around You
Christine Jurisich
If you are working in ministry, it is usually because you have a passion
for spreading God’s love and word. There is always the feeling that
there is so much more to do and so many more people to help.
Sometimes that can lead to burnout and a wearing down of our
body, mind, and spirit. It is okay to stop and take some to renew
yourself in order to continue the work of helping others. Come join
us as we reflect on ways to renew our body, mind, and spirit and the
importance of modeling that for those around us.

Praying the Psalms or Praying the Psalms with Children
Sam Kauffman
Why is Christian unity so important today? In this workshop, we
will discover the scriptural ideal of being gathered into one, the
challenges from a historical perspective and what our Popes have to
say from John XXIII to Francis.
How can we use these beautiful, living prayers to come closer to
God - to bring adults and children into a closer relationship with God?
Through the history, poetic forms, music and unique ideas for praying
the Psalms, these ancient prayer-songs can bring us into the presence
of God. Creative ideas such as Prayer Pathways, creative ideas for
integrating the Psalms into daily life, simple music and stories
surrounding the Psalms will guide participants to use the Psalms to
deepen their prayer life and relationship with God.

Appreciating the Sacrament of Penance: It’s all About the
Loving Mercy of Our Generous God
Susie Hahn
Fifty years ago, the Second Vatican Council required the revision
of the sacrament of Penance to better emphasize the nature of the
sacrament, focusing on our compassionate God (Constitution on
the Sacred Liturgy #72). But is this emphasis really at the center
of your parish’s formation process with your children and their
parents? DREs and catechists, as we anticipate the Year of Mercy,
let’s explore opportunities to increase awareness and love of this
healing sacrament in your ministries, discover how to guide families
to a deeper appreciation of this sacrament and consider what a truly
communal celebration of this sacrament with children and parents
can look like.

explore how to turn any lesson into an EPIC lesson, while retaining

Join us as we review the current research behind same-sex attraction,
the social trends, how is it related to Church teaching, the available
resources, and how to respond to the phenomenon in school,
religious education and pastoral care contexts. We will also look at
how to articulate, interpret and discuss the topic with love, concern,
and respect, focusing on common talking points, which may be
confusing, often confronted within today’s culture.

Gathered into One through the RCIA Experience
Mike Knepshield
This workshop will identify the RCIA as a gathering call by the Holy
Spirit; individuals are called as participants, sponsors, facilitators, and
parishioners. The workshop will identify, through Scriptural reference,
the need to encourage all of these to become more active. We will
identify the available ministries, the ministry’s involvement, and how
ministries are created.

Why Everyone Needs Fertility Appreciation Education
Loree Lippsmeyer
The Church’s teaching on responsible parenthood - i.e., use NFP not
contraception - is often either relegated just to marriage prep or
ignored entirely. But the relevance and need for the truth and beauty
of this teaching is much larger and reaches across the spectrum of
age groups and state in life contexts. How can our parishes better get
the good word out?
B-12
We All Need A Retreat
Ryan Lopez
In this workshop, we will discuss the importance of retreats for young
people AND for those leading the retreat, how retreats have evolved
and where they are today, and what young people are looking for in
a retreat.
This workshop is also offered on Saturday at 11:15AM as Workshop D-11

We Are Called to Serve
Julie Moody
Christian Service is an integral part of our Christian responsibility.
Come share what you are doing, hope to introduce to your school
community or just look for some new ideas to expand Christian
Service among your students and their families. After all, this is what
it means to fully respond to discipleship and follow the message and
example of Jesus.
B-14
Jesus--A Collaborative Leader
Christopher Nelson
This workshop will focus on how Jesus’ collaboration with the Father,
the Holy Spirit and the people He loved was a crucial ingredient in
providing Him with the inspiration, courage, humility and strength He
needed to conquer sin and save humanity.

“Hurts So Good” : Ministering to Adolescents
Who Suffer Injury
Roy Petitfils
One in every five American teens cut, carve, burn or beat themselves
in order to feel better. In this session, you’ll hear from real teens and
why they started, why they continued and why they stopped. You’ll
leave this session able to recognize the warning signs, understand
the deeper issues involved and possess a clear understanding of the
critical role you, as a minister or catechist, play in pastorally caring for
these teens.

earth? In this workshop, we will examine the climate changes
affecting us the most and how the Church invites us to respond.

Post-Abortion Syndrome
Dr. Mónica Ruiz-Durant
Women who have had abortions are six times more likely to commit
suicide than women who carried their pregnancies to term. PostAbortion Syndrome is characterized by depression, anxiety, posttraumatic stress, addiction, eating disorders, self-injurious behaviors
and more. But hope and healing are available. This workshop
will address recognition of Post-Abortion Syndrome and healing
resources through our Church.

Preparing School Masses with Children
Michael Ruzicki
This workshop will assist school teachers (and others) in teaching
children the language of the liturgy by including them in the
preparation of the Mass. Doing so will reinforce their Catholic identity
by breaking open the Word, selecting music, preparing liturgical
environment, and serving in liturgical ministries. Participants will gain
(or improve) the tools necessary for collaboration and communication
while knowing they are doing the “right thing” liturgically.
B-19
Hyperactive Gospel: Ministering to Middle School Youth
Joel Stepanek
Middle school youth ministry transforms the hearts of young
people by proposing the Gospel early. Its methodology differs from
a classroom model. Participants will understand middle school
development; effective modes of transmitting the Gospel and
evangelizing young people; the necessity of involving the parish
community and how to involve parents, priests, high school students,
and adult volunteers in middle school ministry; and best practices
for structuring a middle school ministry, recruiting volunteers,
catechetical methodology, and liturgical integration.

Mathew Kelly, that addresses these questions and can lead to greater

Olvidaremos a Nepal?

support networks with other ministers, create spaces to be honest

this dynamic, humorous session you’ll learn the four types of human
resistance and why most of our evangelization and catechesis is

Parishes cannot substitute for parents. For faith formation to last a
lifetime, parents must be involved the process. Parents want to do
this but often feel intimidated and don’t know where to start. This
challenge is the very heart of evangelization. This workshop will
explore the role of parents, as taught by the Church; practical ways
parishes can engage, coach, and empower parents; and resources
available to support parish leaders in this ministry.
We know we are all one body of Christ and we know we all need one
another to build up the Kingdom of God, but working together as a
team doesn’t always come naturally. Teamwork takes skill and practice
and, most of all, humility. Join us as we spend time reflecting on ways
we can empower rather than delegate, accept help from others rather
than work alone, and, most importantly, enjoy serving as one body of
Christ.

broken in front of us - be they students, neighbors, parishioners,
or co-workers. They often suffer the sudden loss of death, divorce,
serious disease, and other tragedies. We may not know what to do
or say. We feel inadequate before such pain. Using stories from life
and from Sacred Scripture, Deacon David and Lorie will explore
competent and compassionate responses including what not to say/
do and what to say/do. In addition, examples of how to help those in
such horrendous grief and pain will be covered. Deacon David and
Lorie will teach from faith experience and their own losses.
Discovering our Spiritual Gifts
Mel Kennedy
We all have spiritual gifts. “We are many parts. We are all one body.
And the gifts we have, we are given to share.” Through song, scripture,
reflection, and practical suggestions, this workshop will explore how
to name, claim, and share the gifts bestowed on us by the Holy Spirit.

Nurturing a Spirituality of One Heart
Sr. Maria Elena Martinez, OSF
There is a movement of the Spirit in our midst, manifested by a
greater awareness about collaboration, partnership, cooperation,
human kindness, mercy and compassion. There is also a
consciousness about our call to move from the “I” to the “WE.” How
can we nurture a spirituality of One Heart in our daily lives?

Evangelizing Engaged Couples
Deacon Dennis Gorsuch
A Spirituality of Courage: Praying with Women in Scripture
Sarah Otto
As Marriage Preparation Ministers, we have a challenge to help
engaged couples see the Sacrament of Marriage as a vocation -- a
call from God to a special and fulfilling path in life. This workshop
identifies ways to connect with engaged couples, focusing on
prayer, the significance of parenthood, the value of service, and
understanding how the Cross leads to salvation.
This workshop will introduce Ignatian Contemplation, an active way
of praying with scripture that engages the mind and heart, with a
particular lens of women in scripture. From Mary’s courageous “yes,”
to the resilience of the women who stay at the foot of the cross when
all others flee, we will uncover a spirituality of courage for women in
the Church.

The Saints and the New Evangelization
TBA
In 2013, Pope Francis said, “We need saints with jeans and tennis
shoes...that place God in first place ahead of succeeding in any
career...to sanctify the world and to not be afraid of living in the
world”. We will look at the extraordinary lives of not-so-well-known
saints of our time whom the Church has given us to emulate. We’ll
explore their sufferings and how, through them, God literally changed
the world!

What is Spiritual Direction? What Can Spiritual Direction
do for you?
Fr. Brent Otto, S.J.
Until the Second Vatican Council, it was common only for priests and
religious to have spiritual directors. But since the Council, the Church
has realized that spiritual direction can be a great help to anyone who
takes seriously his/her relationship with God. Come learn more about
spiritual direction, how it is different from counseling, mentorship or
therapy, and how to find and work with a spiritual director near you.

Instruments: Handmaidens of the Choir
Brian Sennello
Instruments perform a dual role on the liturgical choir. According
to ‘Sing to the Lord (86),’ instruments “are best understood as an
extension of, and support to, the primary liturgical instrument,
which is the human voice.” This workshop will demonstrate
practical methods to best utilize instruments for both these
functions: organists, pianists and guitarists to support, and other
instrumentalists to extend and enhance, choir and congregational
singing. Participants will also be encouraged to share their own
findings of best practices and challenging situations.

Leave a Mark that None Can Erase
Steven Do
A thousand years from now, how will you be remembered? Every
saint in the 2,000 year history of the Church is unique and different,
yet they are all the same in that they loved boldly, lived fearlessly
and made Christ known. These three virtues are the essence of
discipleship and there is not a single saint that has not exemplified
them. We, too, are called to embody these virtues in our lives. How are
we loving boldly? Do we live fearlessly? At the end of the day, have
we made Christ known to those we encounter? We are called to be
disciples. We are called to be saints.

impulsora para llevar la Buena Nueva. 2. Hacer Comunidades de
Discípulos Misioneros. 3. Ser Discípulos Misioneros con alegría.
Pastoral de la Comunión
Sr. Virgina Alcala
E-55
